Paul McCloskey vs Barry Morrison October 2nd
Re: Paul McCloskey vs Barry Morrison October 2nd
uninspiring matchup. i have always found lynes/morrison/daws/wright/mccloskey a bit boring and a reason to watch something other than friday fight night.
hardly rhodes-moore or munroe-maludrottu, is it?

Re: Paul McCloskey vs Barry Morrison October 2nd
They say in boxing that you’re as good as your last fight. Take Paul McCloskey, the unbeaten southpaw from Dungiven in Northern Ireland who struggled against Italy’s Giussepe Lauri in his last appearance and who now lowers his sights, shades of David Haye, against a pending domestic opponent. McCloskey defends his European light-welterweight title against Scotland’s Barry "The Bizness" Morrison in the Irish Republic in October.
There was talk of a world title shot for McCloskey after he trounced Colin Lynes in nine rounds in 2008, stepping in as a late substitute for the reluctant David Barnes, although Paul was scheduled to fight on the card. In stopping Lynes, McCloskey claimed the British light-welterweight title which he retained in impressive fashion against outgunned Midlander Dean Harrison in four rounds. He graduated to the big EBU belt with a one-sided thumping of Spain’s Daniel Rasilla in nine rounds last November, but then came the wild and woolly Lauri affair in June at the historic King’s Hall in Belfast. The champion lacked sharpness against a vastly experienced opponent but pulled out a big right hook to end it in the 11th round. "I'm happy with the result but I am not happy with my performance - it was poor by my standards," he told the BBC.
Now 21-0 (11), McCloskey turns to Morrison, a strong and capable fellow from Motherwell who snatched a split decision over a previously unbeaten Lenny Daws in London in January 2007 to wrest the British light-welterweight title but never pushed on and lost the title within six months to respective opponent Lynes (points) and was also beaten by Daws in a rematch last year (a knockout in 10 rounds). The Scot claims that an iron deficiency affected his form in the Daws return, when he faded badly after a bright start, but Daws is known for his strength and stamina so it may or not be the case.
Ominously, McCloskey is also known for his strength and stamina as he barrels forward and thumps away to body and head. Morrison goes well to the body in reply and exchanges in the early and middle rounds are likely to be lively and punishing, but McCloskey is the slicker of the two men and his greater strength, and greater class, should tell in the later rounds by way of a stoppage.

The "Irish Republic" hasnt existed since 1922.
The legal name of the country I think you are referring to is simply Ireland.
Also McCloskey isnt from north of the border as Letterkenny in Ireland is further north then Dungiven in Northern Ireland.
Just a coupla of points that jumped out at me when read your posts.

Playing with semantics yet again - the UN and the EU and nearly everyone else who matters recognizes the 'Repubic of Ireland' over 'Ireland' save the IRB and the AIBA .

Would ya not kiss me arse with yer "political agenda" crap. You are the only one with the agenda to be honest - last week refusing to acknowledge that Irish people are Irish - be me a favour.Carlos-Wigan wrote:Leonard - can you keep your political agenda out of this just for once.slapbangwhallop wrote:The "Irish Republic" hasnt existed since 1922.

Let me have a look at me passport and see what the name of the country I am from is - oh there it is - Ireland!
I would say that nearly everyone who matters outside FIFA recognises the name of the country is not 'Republic of Ireland' but 'Ireland' - because it is. Also bennie called it the "Irish Republic" - its a bit like calling New York - New Amsterdam.

Once again you ignored the fact he called it the "Irish Republic" - anyway.
Well why dont we start with the EU (which you said referred to the country as the Republic of Ireland) http://europa.eu/about-eu/27-member-cou ... dex_en.htm
Then add in the UN http://www.un.org/en/members/index.shtml#i
and end in a Ssssshhhh!!!

Indeed - you learn something new everyday - doesn't make it fact though! Describe the map of 'Ireland' on the EU map for those whose sight might not be so good?slapbangwhallop wrote:Once again you ignored the fact he called it the "Irish Republic" - anyway.

Stop evading the question! Describe the map of 'Ireland' on the EU website - that is all you need to do... Is there an internationally recognized national border on that map? - yes or no...slapbangwhallop wrote:"doesn't make it fact though" - stop making a clown of your please.

Of course there is an internationally recognised border on that map - the one between Ireland and Northern Ireland. When did I say there wasnt? Its like arguing with a 4 year old.
Yes, I am really furious because a British childerns website which says Ireland is famous for potatoes and thinks the head of the government is still Bertie Ahern. Almost as outdated as Bennie calling Ireland the Irish Republic.

The fact the fight is live on rté (ireland's national broadcaster) will hopefully boost McCloskey profile south of the border
. After he's last fight there was hardly any coverage of it in the national newspapers
.There was also a poor showing from boxing fans from the Republic at the Lauri fight (I saw hardly any southern reg. cars at the fight)
. Hopefully the TV coverage will sort it out.

Morrison is a bum and Daws is a bum.
Amir Khan needs to grow some nuts and fight Paul McCloskey.
He's going to have to eventually, WHEN he gets destroyed by Maidana, Bradley or Alexander.

anybody who knws boxingshould knw khan would put a beating on mccloskey, and maidana isn't great khan would school him, alexander got exposed against kotelnik, kotelnik won that fight!
Khan would hardley school maidana, for one the man is as smart as a fornicating emu. Also, maidana only has to hit him once and he'll break like a particularly overrated egg. McCloskey would beat the shit out of Khan because he hasn't been protected throughout his career, can take and give a punch and doesn't mouth off every two seconds about how much he has achieved.
Khan is a wanker and will be gone soon enough.

maidana is smart?? he rushes in like a bull with his chin exposed! throwing wild punches, im not khans biggest fan but he would muller mccloskey
Well, then if Khan could then he should fight McCloskey.
McCloskeys up for it. Of course, super-protected Khan wouldn't risk it. And it is a risk.
Khan is coming to the end of his career. I say we get two or three more weak-ass fights before hes forced to fight someone real then he just pisses off forever.
Can't wait.
