Willie Limond vs Erik Morales

Post by black panther »

I know this has been common knowledge for a while but it's an interesting match-up and a great opportunity for Limond. He's obviously been picked because he isn't the hardest of hitters but with Morales so out of shape you have to give him a great chance at the upset. This article made me laugh; pretty sure Limond has never been called "Hands of Steel" !

The article states the fight is for the "WBC Diamond Super Lightweight Championship" - another spurious title but on boxrec its for a welterweight title. Anyone confirm which weight the fight is at? I would have thought if Morales is serious he would be looking to work his way back to lightweight.

Three-division world champion Morales (49-6, 34 KOs), who returned this past March 27, after 2 ½ years of inactivity, defeating former WBA lightweight titlist Jose “Jicaras” Alfaro (23-6, 20 KOs) by a 12-round decision for the WBC Intercontinental welterweight crown, is on a mission to become the first Mexican to capture world titles in four different weight classes.

Morales goes for his 50th career win in the 12-round main event on “Mexican Fiesta” against WBU lightweight champion Willie “Hands of Steel” Limond (33-2, 8 KOs), of Scotland, for the vacant WBC Diamond Super Lightweight Championship.

One of the most revered Mexican fighters of all-time, Morales’ list of victims over the years reads like a Who’s Who list of boxing stars: Manny Pacquiao, Marco Antonio Barrera, Pauli Ayala, Wayne McCullough, Junior Jones, Carlos Hernandez, Jesus Chavez, Guty Espada, Jr. (twice), Daniel Zaragoza and Kevin Kelly.

"Hands of Steel" Limmond ?

I like it :D

I will say right now, Limmond could well win this one and I will put a tenner on him fo sho.

Morales is an imposter of his former self nowadays. That tough, proud warrior has retired and this look-a-like will be exposed by 'Hands of Steel', just you mark my words.

It's gonna be the biggest upset in boxing in the the last 20 years... i mean last 20 hours.

Yes, he was caught by a family friend called tony in Mansfield about 6 miles from where i grew up, when i was about 1 years old in 75.

Neilson was his name, he kidnapped a rich kid. Held a ransom for the little girls inheritance, then killed her anyway.

Shot up a load of post offices and then he got stopped about to rob a posty in Mansfield near my village , by the cops.

He took the cops hostage with shotgun and made them drive... but they overpowered him and they crashed outside a chippy and the que came out, recognised 'The panther' and then proceeded to beat the guy within an inch of his life. The police even joined in and chained him to a fence whilst they beat him up.

It was a scene that Gene Hunt from life on mars would have wet his pants over.

 I had no idea about the serial killer! I just liked the animal and as a kid the comic. Before I discovered many boxers had the nickname, I thought it would be a good nickname for a fighter.

It's disappointing and even insulting that fightnews is publishing shite like this. They don't even spell former mainstream fighters like Guty Espadas, Paulie Ayala and Kevin Kelley right.

Glasgow’s Willie Limond dreams the dream when he ventures all the way to Mexico City to face modern boxing great Erik Morales in a 12-rounder next month (September 11).
Limond, who has never fought outside of Britain, goes over as the patsy for a comebacking Morales but is a solid little pro with good recent form and we can expect him to take the Mexican superstar into the middle or later rounds. In 35 fights, Limond has lost only to world champions Amir Khan, whom he had on the deck, and Alex Arthur - both in the eighth round. He comes off five straight victories.
Morales, soon to turn 34, dropped out of the sport in 2007 after a succession of losses, including two at the hands of Filipino great Manny Pacquiao, but sheer boredom brought him back earlier this year and he shed the rust by outscoring a Nicarguan over 12 rounds. This is his second comeback engagement. The tall Tijuana millionaire looks in good shape, after shedding a ton of weight, but still comes in at light-welterweight and that hurts Limond, who is just a lightweight. Morales also fights on Mexican Independence Day in a 45,00-seater bullring, to which there is only one word – ouch!
Limond, 31, has to cope with the heat, the smog, the altitude, the fiercely partisan crowd, most of whom will have downed plenty of tequila, and then there is Morales, a spiteful sort and a spiteful puncher whose 49-6 (34) record makes you wince alongside Limond’s, and I say that with the utmost respect to the brave Scot. While Willie was beating Choi Tseveenpurev, Kevin O’Hara, John Mackay, Harry Ramogoadi, Martin Watson and Kpakpo Allotey, "El Terrible" was beating Pacquiao, In-Jin Chi, Junior Jones, Wayne McCullough, Kevin Kelley, Daniel Zaragoza, Jose Luis Bueno, Carlos Hernandez, Jesus Chavez and bitter rival Marco Antonio Barrera, a man with whom he is now seeking a fourth meeting. Morales destroyed some of those.
Limond is not only outweighed, he lacks the sort of punch that got John H. Stracey out of trouble in the same Mexico City bullring in 1975 where the Londoner climbed off the floor to stop faded Jose "Mantequilla" Napoles in six stunning rounds for the world welterweight title. If history is to repeat itself, Limond needs Morales to show aboslutely nothing, which is a possibility after four straight defeats led to Erik’s recent hiatus, but a slim possibility.
The punishing Morales takes his time and slowly grinds the resistance out of an increasingly busted-up Limond for a late stoppage.

Morales will ko him within 3 rounds. Limond won't be used to the heat or class of morales, who still looked good in his
Last fight.
