OFF TOPIC: SIN CITY

Just watched tarrantions new move, well he is guest director alongside frankie miller, Sin city, the cast is awesome, the filmography brilliant and the storylines great.

cast includes Bruce Willis, who only makes good movies alongside tarrantino, Elijah Wood, brilliant in the move, mickey rourke, plays big bad ass mother fu**er, clive owen, great as always, blanco del torro (is it??), plays nasty bloke, michael duncan (john coffe off green mile), britney Murphy, michael madsen ...... loads of others too

its very CGI and based on 3 comic book stories by frankie miller based in basin city, a corrupt city with very little law and order. The film is very comic bookie and most significantly is all in black and white with exception to some bits of colour (a bit like schindlers list when the girls coat is red).

Anyhow if you get the chance go to the cinema, think its out in about 4-6 weeks.... if you cant wait PM me.

Definately going to watch this. Great cast, and I'm a big fan of Miller's comic book work.

Yep, used to draw comics myself, and Frank Miller was the don in my opinion. Great writer and great inker too. Never actually read Sin City, but saw the artwork which was awesome.

Dark night returns was without doubt the best comic book ever produced.

Frank Miller is in the film too - bit part. Awesome comic book's, really dark.

Elija Wood's charactewr is pretty cool although it was weird seeing the hobit taller and playing the role of Kevin.

Cant wait. It is directed by Robert Rodrigeuz who did from Dust till dawn and desperdao etc. They used the Sin City comics (I have them all) as a story board so scenes in the movie actually can be frozen to match scenes in the comics. He did not want to do a rodrigeuz version of Sin City, he wanted to do Sin City in its original brutal beautiful glory. Excellent.

yes, do you know if there is any relevance to what is in colour during the film? as the film itself is 95% black and white.

The graphic novels are in black and white, with the occasional splash of red, a dress, some lipstick, some blood, that kind of thing.

I'd say 2nd best. The number 1, imo, Watchmen is being made into a film too

Damn straight Shirow! Watchmen was THE shit. Bit of an open and shut case for me, as to the finest comic of all. Though The Sandman ruled, too.

I'll probably go and see Sin City, but I always thought the comic a bit noir-lite, myself. For all the swearing and gunplay it's an ADD riddled thirteen year old virgin's idea of the genre. The main points of noir -- the way it throws a harsh and unblinking (if venetian blind slatted) light on the abuses of authority and power that our institutions commit in our name, the moral erosion of violence and the all-pervasive fear and ennui of modern urban life -- were missed so far by Miller I didn't even find the book funny, TBH. Looked pretty, though.

And giving it to Rodriguez... 'kin' 'ell. The man's a hack. But still. My girlfriend'll wanna see it, so...

Agree about Watchmen. Watchmen > Heart of Empire > League of Extraordinary Gentlemen > The Ballad of Halo Jones > Dark knight returns, off the top of my head.

Think you're intellectualising noir a bit there, Nels, or maybe being a bit harsh on Sin City. Fair enough, if you think noir begins and ends with A Touch of Evil, then your description is spot on, but then you could consider that the likes of Citizen Kane, the Gunshooter (a western), Alien and The Postman Always Rings Twice (the old b&w one) are all examples of noir, really. Sin City is light on paranoia, but the whole style's as much about mood as content, and I reckon Millers' work has got that in spades.

Possibly, possibly. But in Citizen Kane the corrupting influence is power rather than violence; in Alien it's the Other (that one's a haunted house movie, honest!)... In fact I'd say that not one of those other movies is noir. They're all something else, which use noir elements -- like the Expressionistic lighting et cetera -- but aren't in fact noir. I'm not saying that to be noir a movie's gotta have Richard Widmark and Robert Mitchum but then...

Ah, fornicate it. Hands up.

I'll admit I'm being a bit sniffy about the definition of noir. I'll stop being precious about it.

Everyone's got their pet peeves though, right...?

And no, I didn't much like Sin City the comic. I've heard that as well as using the distinctive visual style on the movie they've reconstructed the dialogue verbatim. Which would be nice, but I seem to remember it consisting of monsyllabic grunts and the occasional "fornicator!"

Anyway.

Watchmen rules. And Touch of Evil's a great fornicating movie. Ever seen Build My Gallows High? I think it went out in the US as Out of the Past...

Overall for me Dark Knight is better, mainly because the artwork is a lot better than the stuff in Watchmen. Alan Moore is great though, Ballad of Halo Jones was way way ahead of it's time. Moebius produces some fantastic stuff too. Walt Simonson issues of Thor were also absolutely excellent.
