Was Sugar Ray Robinson really the best of all time?
Re: Was Sugar Ray Robinson really the best of all time?
I always thought Gainsford wasnt His manager.

Was Robinson self managed? Did Gainsford have another role?Scrap wrote:I always thought Gainsford wasnt His manager.

Robinson used to enjoy 'screwing' promoters. He is the only fighter in history who repeatedly turned the tables.

Its something as I say that I wondered for years. When people who I respect told me He was connected to the mob,. my 1st impression was fornicate off. But the story wouldnt go away. The people involved so Im told worked for Mob, why would He mainline at the Garden in the 40s if He wasnt connected. A good freind of mine who visits Canasota every year told me of a story, of Him talking to the Mobs accountant who was drinking with Him, then an old man. Now my mate is a big Robinson Fan. But I asked Him if He believed what the guy had told Him, His reply was yes. Im wondering if I should put this up,

The mob didn't always control fighters - or fights - as much as generated. One fighter remarked of his manager, "He was connected to the mob but just got on with making the best matches for me."Scrap wrote:Its something as I say that I wondered for years. Don King is the mob and we've seen him lose a few.
Re: Was Sugar Ray Robinson really the best of all time?
Bennie little bit different then than now. Its believed Don has connections, He isnt the Mob. The Maxim fight was interesting, at Lightheavy Maxim struggling at the weight. Robinson Hydrated, same day weigth in.

Sugar Ray Robinson was superb. A real superstar of his time. Just watch the old fight footage of him. He was a real dynamite puncher who looked to get the KO. This is something that surprised me after reading so much about him .. I always kinda expected a sweet boxing elusive type..
Greb, by all accounts, was a swashbuckling threshing machine, who once warmed up gave no let up .. offence once again was the best defence. He did however avoid the top black fighters when need be ... but certainly not to the extent you would have expected from a top white fighter of that time. Buisiness was buisiness and he had bills to pay...
Charley Burley has been mentioned in regard to Ray Robinson. That would have been a fine match-up
sadly Robinson. much like Henry Armstrong, seen too much risk to tangling with Burley.
History books often overlook guys that `the greats` avoided.

robinson was one of the best of all time, if ur talking about full career then yes he was, if ur talking about fighters at their peak fighting each other then roy jones jr is the best fighting machine ever at his peak in the mid 90s

Henry Armstrong would have to be considered. SRR IS prob the best, but boxing suffers from nostalgia more than most other sports. Its like an unwritten rule Ali is "the greatest" cos every other kunt has said so. frustrates the fornicate out of me, maybe best heavyweight (but you could still make a case for others)

No mention of Langford?
Re: Was Sugar Ray Robinson really the best of all time?
I rate Ezzard Charles Higher, His resume is unbelievable. Never more than a Lightheavy, and from 48 Boxed with MS which He died from. Beat Burley twice as a 19 year old, He had a few pounds over Burley [6ib] . Beat great fighters and gave weight, pure class, never had an easy road.

Had he beaten Fritzie Zivic, I would agree with you.stevieb_8006 wrote:Henry Armstrong would have to be considered.

Robinson carried fighters for the MOB so they could bet on the UD, its rumoured he carried Henry Armstrong, but it may have also been Armstrong was his hero. Once he accidently KO'd someone he was supposed to carry and was apparently bricking itScrap wrote:Its something as I say that I wondered for years. Yes.
You can make a case for many boxers but when it's said and done Sugar Ray Robinson was peerless. an artisan of his trade.
I was once in a room and heard Sugar Ray Leonard call Floyd Mayweather the best of all time but i think he was just being kind, or paid.

Robinson or Armstrong for me.
Armstrong's record is unbelievable. He never weighed in anywhere near the Welter limit despite being Welterweight champ. He absolutely destroyed all his challengers at the weight too.

Jones Jnr at his peak could never be beaten (other than a DQ) by any fighter.
No one was ever as good as Jones.
