britains up and coming heavywieght scene

Post by davie »

having read recently about the disgrace that is audley harrison getting a shot against our finest heavywieght in years i wondered what everyone thought of our fine array of young/new heavywieghts-
sexton, chisora, fury, olibamewu, price and dallas

ok not so young in larrys case, but i've watched the 6 of them a few times and been reasonably impressed with the early signs from most. most of them have been against weak opposition and every one has undoubtably looked a little rough around the edges. but it's early days for these lads and with a bit of work, who do we see making a decent career for themselves in the long run???

hopefully with haye (when he decides to fight the right bouts) and our new batch, the future brings us more than the harrison/williams/skelton/sprott era

All very exciting at the moment but I'm not sure any of these lads are going to make it to world level. It's good that Sexton and Chirosa and squaring up for the title with Fury looking to challenge the winner. If these prospects all challenge for the British and Commanwealth over the next two years then we will have a much better idea how talented a group there are. World beaters who knows? but very exciting domestic scene ahead.

as i said, all are a long way from world class. dallas and price are big powerful lads who need a lot of work on technique and will need a few more years of working there way up through the lower level, but both seem to have a finishing punch in there, fury needs a bit more low level opposition to grow up IMO before he starts thinking about sexton or chisora, he's only young and struggled against mcdermot at times, but again has size and power on his side, i think he's been rushed in quite quickly. big olubamiwu is a big machine and maybe doesn't have the same amount of time on his side, but he certainly knows how to wade through weaker opposition. he seems to have his head screwed on though and appreciates there is a long way to go and a lot of work before he steps up.

sexton and chisora are closer to the finished article and have fought at the higher level. technically both look quite good but both possibly lack the size, power and knockout punch of the 4 mentioned above. they've had a decent fight before and i'm looking forward to them squaring up for another slugfest for the brittish and commonwealth titles.

whether any will go all the way....only time will tell. but i think we're in for some exciting domestic competition. (no i'm not talking about any bout including A-Force).

i'd quite like to see some of these young guns matched up against some of the old guard, like williams, skelton and harrison (once he's been shown up at world level). i'd rather see them dispose of the old guys on there way out of the sport (assuming they're ready) than have 2 of them fight each other just now and blemish one of their records.

Surely no real boxing fan would want to see Williams back in the ring again taking unnecessary punishment, let alone facing off against a 'young gun'? :o
Danny's given us years of value albeit in roller-coaster fashion, and should be retiring gracefully, not acting as cannon fodder for anyone.

Especially when Danny had far more talent than all these up and coming names in his pomp.

The domestic scene sure looks interesting and I hope we see some good fights over the next 3-4 years between them all.

sexton v chisora is a great fight...two really good prospects.... a decent title fight

Larry o is crude but has power and is finally fighting brits instead of latvian imports who have already rolled over against his to his stablemates)

Primo Fisting is dwindling away into nothing...he should just do a prizefighter or retire

David Price is ok but has a thin neck and ankles...will get 'camerelled' at anything above Brit level

Dallas should fight Towers

I don't remember seeing the first match between chisora/sexton, obv I can see who won but can anyone tell me how it happened?

Sexton has an air of fragility about him, he looked about to go in both Rogan fights and he's still only had 14 fights.

I didn't see it eiher but by all accounts Sexton was ahead on points and then got careless and got caught.

The main event was Brook/Jones on Setanta, as far as I'm aware, it (this fight) wasn't televised.

Chisora-Sexton. Parts one, two, and three respectively. BS stoppage if you ask me, especially considering they were trading shots like that back and forth for the entire round.

Really bad stoppage.Just watched it for the first time since it took place and cant believe he stopped it with less than a minute left in a fight like that.

It was a bad stoppage and highlights to me that Chisora has beat nobody which is ironic as the thread creator calls Audley a disgrace. If Audley was a Brit champ having fought the level that Chisora has (we have established he should have lost to sexton) people here would be having heart attacks.

people are being slightly biased here.

sexton boxed well at the start ...and gassed.

Derek unloaded with big combos in the fifth....sexton was wrestling desperately in the sixth and Derek had him going.

it was an ok stoppage.

it should be remembered that these two were novices with probably only 10/12 fights between them.

derek has done nothing since and was gifted the brit title...whereas sexton has progressed through the hard route...Prizefighter and two wars with Rogan.

all in all its a very exciting return....and under the present domestic climate with Fury making a monkey of the sport this should restore a lot of cred.
