Education - MASSIVE INVESTMENT

Massive investment is one thing, and commendable. Using that investment efficiently is another thing. Labour's answer is to form Quango after quango, which are to politics what sanctioning bodies are to boxing. Shite. Tories, on the other hand, would probably cut spending and/or many of the quangos without creating a higher efficiency. Conclusion: Shite. That leaves the Liberals, who wouldn't have a clue what to do if they were to come to power, due to lack of work experience, and would drive every footballer and fat cat to live in Jersey.
Good, let them go and live in Jersey then....

Most of the investment is wasted. Ever met any teachers? The governments policies make them do incredible amounts of pointless paperwork, teach in a set way that may not work. I've even been told by teachers they were marked down by inspectors after using an incorrect technique which helped some children which could not previously read.

The economy would be vibrant regardless, Labour just were lucky to get on a run on a goo economic cycle.

Health Investment - on what middle management? Education investment - on what getting half of students to do degrees in sociology (costing £7000 per student per year) so they can work in call centres.

LABOUR WASTE TAX PAYERS MONEY and at least Conserverties are against that and support the country and business people that many EU treaties destroy

What about the ridiculous levels of taxation and stealth taxes

What about the lies over iraq.

What about the lies over MMR

What about hospital infections

What about the punishment of motorist

What about the way Labour has destroyed pensions

What about the fraudulent way MP's are allowed to claim expenses - Why arent Labour dealing with this.

What about the sheer WASTE of Taxpayers money.

This government is the most dishonest and deceitful government in history.

Get rid of it.

that in itself says enough. :TU:
Look mate, I've taken the nationalisation debate to its nth degree. I'm not suggesting we go back or buy back these industries.

As for the 28% rise. As far as I'm aware that is absolute bollacks.

Miners went on strike because they're trying to shut pits not for pay. They started with a few and Scargill knew it wasn't about creating a more streamlined coal producing industry, it was about SHUTTING the coal producing industry.

As for Longbridge and too much striking etc. Sure the control had swung too far, but under Thatcher it swung TOO far toward the employers, whether that be private or public service.

And if you want an open, progressive, balanced, flexible government - you've got one - vote for them again. They've employed right-wing policy alongside socialists agendas.

Yet they get crucified for it.

They're the most pragmatic leadership we've had in memory.

OK, so I dont recall the anarchy that preceded 79, the same as you dont recall the creation of the NHS, free education for all etc that preceded the tories.....

A lucky break the economy? Get real, I presume the TORIES just had an unlucky 18 years then? What shit.

The Tories ran a boom-bust economy, because that is at the heart of capitalist philosphy its an inevitable when you use just one weapon, interest rates to control the economy.

Health investment? I'm not sure where this misnoma about middle-management comes from, I'm sure someone will drag up some ha;f-arsed stats from some where - but what I do know is Nurses are better paid than ever, that doctors hours have been managed, that massive investment in new hospitals has also been made. In a business as big as the British economy, some waste is inevitable.

Education investment? Yep, the push for accountability, usually the doctorine of the tories has created problems in schools, but again teachers are paid better and if they have to work 8-6 five days a week and sometimes have to do work at home - welcome to the real world. I dont get 14 weeks off a year and I do that.

And as for the Tories being against wasting tax money, you're right because they'd prefer not to collect it and allow us to pay for everything individually. They're about giving choice to the rich and hobsons choice to the poor.

And how much did it cost to TRY and keep the POUND in the European exchange rate - £10billion or was it £100 billion. All for pride and to protect reputation. It was humiliting.

They're backdated, polarised thinkers without one shred of evidence that they would be better for this country economically, internationally in terms of eduction, health, transport, industry, export etc.....

If you want progress government, with leaders who have some courage and ethics....dont vote for the vampire.

As for this stealth tax nonsense. For fkks sake, we have a population that demands care, the elderly demand on the tax payer is vastily underestimated in this country.

You cannot invest in services, in the future, without paying for it.

But if you want the lot who took away free school milk, made you pay for you dentists appointments, eye care, introduced poll tax, VAT rises, sold off YOUR share in nationalised industry to thr rich, plundered North Sea oil to sustain election winning tax cuts, destroyed entire communities in the north, oversaw the biggest balance of trading defecit in history. The government has a secondary role in economonic management. Labour has done a few good things with the economy - giving BankOfEngland control over interest rates has been great for the country. This is Gordon Browns doing and hes 1 of the few people who has a clue what hes actually doing.

The Torries did F Up the economy in the past (although they made positive reforms in the 80s too), so have labour in previous governments, it doesnt mean they'll screw it up now.

And yes the Torries screwed the country over joing a semi-european currency - Labour want us to do this now with no chance of pulling out (even if our country isn't on birth control)

Oh and inefficiency in the public sector is far worse than in any company in the world. And theres tons of funds wasted in middle management.

You are right about the Torries starting the attack on teachers - which was partly done to destroy the teachers unions. Yes teachers are payed more now but they still have a very very high teacher turnover (because teachers get sick of the way the system treats them). Theres a reason teachers boo the education minister. But just like most policies Labour has followed suit and continued what the Torries started.

By the way the 28% wage rise you referred to WAS incorrect. That was an issue from the early seventies.

The miners strike began on the issue of shutting Ograve (Sp) pit.

Sorry mate.
for the fact that it was an issue in the early seventies discontent arose from this rising to friction (there were strikes over this issue) which eventually led to the nationwide strikes you are referring to so go fornicate yourself commie. :TU:

you dont honestly think that national strike comes about over a six month period you dunce.

Its ongoing tensions over years and the 28% pay hike that was declined can be traced back to the commencement of strike activity and hostilities between govt run British Coal and the miners, further discontent and rise of miners union to national prominence.

as i again i referred to when Brtitish coal wanted to downsize they could not, so less miners may have meant more pay for those left. Simple economics mate.

as i refer to in my posts the descaling and issues under labour Governments had a massive impact. You really are arguing with the wrong bloke on this.

READ MY POSTS NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO READ MATE.
I CONSTANTLY REFER TO THE DESCALING OF THE MINING COMMUNITY AND INDUSTRY SINCE THE 60S.

So British Coal and the Miners had a history. Duh. You think.

The miner strike of 84 began over pit closures. You can try and claim actions a decade before were the root cause and to a point I would agree with you. In the sense, the Tories wanted to break the miners as revenge for 1973/4 and because they were the heart and soul of the union movement.

However, doesn't the idea that industry was being downsized from the sixties somewhat contradict the 'Plan for Coal' agreed by all parties in 1974, which promised investment and increased production?

So in a way, the miners strike did have its roots in the seventies, and I guess by association the pay rise request you refer to.

But the issue of the day was the shutting of pits, that is an inescapable truth isn't it? Thats is the reason the miners came out on strike because a pit was being closed.

And it wasn't shutting of pits on pure economics, surely we can see past that cant we?

And with all due respect to you dad who was in the top ten at British Coal J, its hard not to presume the Government agenda, both public and private drove their actions. Which is why the American Ian McGregor was brought in to oversea the whole sorry episode. Just as he'd already done to British Steel.

Anyway, I'm getting close to beginning to include hyperlinks, which is usually the sign that the point is growing tired and we're polarised. And I know how you hate links.

It probably boils down to which side of the tracks you were on.

My Dad was miner for 26 years at Bentley before being made redundant in 1993 and my Grandad did 40 years at Bentley (with a six year WW2 stint) before retiring at 60.

So I guess the scars run deep.

They certainly do. I was involved only peripherally in Rotherham, in that, I came from a well off family so, the impact directly on our family was minimal.

My father was a Dr who treated both miners and police for their injuries, so I heard some of the horror stories.

I also had a huge number of friends whose families were either in the mines or the steelworks (you were more or less one or the other in Rotherham until the 80's ) and I saw the impact on them and their lives of the destruction of the industries and the strikes.

There are lots of arguments about the need to move away from a declining manufacturing base, but what cannot be doubted is that Thatcher did not care what the human cost was of achieving this. I saw familes go from a comfortable lifestyle to being on the breadline in two years. I saw hugely bright people being denied education because they had to get any job they could to support their parents and extended families. I had one friend whose family lost their home. These are the real human stories and no amount of Keynsian rationalising will make me feel anythingless than blind hatred for that woman and her henchmen.

It says a lot that, in S Yorks even to this day, Mansfield ( where the strike was broken ) is still called "scabtown" and that is over 20 years on

I've have the unhappy controdiction of being a Yorkshireman and a Frest fan, so its somehow strange to sit at Hillsbrough or Barnsley and hear 20,000 Yorkshireman shouting SCAB, SCAB, SCAB - 15-20 years on.

Thats how deep it is. Its tribal.

And people still know and remember who the scabs were all these years on.

And some are still defined by it. And incredibly it almost partially inherited.

'Yeh, his dad was a scab at Hatfield' etc....

Things have to change......granted.

my issue is not to do with political bias though mate, thats my point, James and david are by their admission pretty left wing.

i am on some issues and more to the right wing on others.

as i was pretty affected as a child by the above topics then maybe that coudl be the reasoning behind what you deem as "dribble"  :TU: (i know thats not what you said just joshing)

bein interesting to have a pint and a chat over this there is no intonation on "keyboards" is possible that people dont come accross as intended.
