8.9 million watch Wlad on ARD (german TV)

this really puts shitty Sky and the Beeb into perspective....
it goes to show the market is still huge for boxing ..... when sold to the audience properly

Is ard a terrestial german channel, also what is the population of germany - is 8.9 particularly good?
I agree, there is a market for Boxing in the UK. I remember a Delroy Leslie fight which was shown (possibly live) on Saturday afteroon (Grandstand) - I can't remember if it was live or on a few hours delay achieving a 4 million rating. That was impressive given the time of the show and the standard of boxer (no disrespect). This was also, post Benn vs McClellan.
There are strong rumours of an ITV return, however the standard of programming they are bringing out on Saturday Night, I do fear even the great old ITV coverage will now be shite. They seem obsessed with Celebrities. I can see it being a Bravo esque presentation.

Sold? The fight was on free channel. The weather wasnt particluarly good, so many people will watch.knockout wrote:this really puts shitty Sky and the Beeb into perspective....

Population of Germany is 85 million. But the channel is also seen in Poland , Check Republic, France, Switzerland and Austria.
Still it is a good number. The Klitsko brothers are doing a lot of commercials on German TV and they have name/face recognition, beyond the boxing hard core fans.

So the British equivilent...roughly...say about 4-5 million on BBC 2 for Skelton-Williams on a Friday/Saturday night. I'd say that was definitely achievable, although it would take a lot of re-education (does that have a hyphen, or have I just made that word up?) to make 'the masses' understand all about the current boxing climate - politics, sanc bodies, tv deals, rain, hail etc.

8.9 is really good, one of the best quotes. this year the record was DM-Tiozzo with 8 millions. ARD and ZDF are free channels. I think the record is Maske-Rocchigiani in the 90´s with more than 11 millions. Maske was a national hero in the GDR. so rather anybody of these guys were sitting in front of the telly. regarding the fact that boxing wasn´t existing over here fifteen years ago, it´s very good. in the eighties onnly some hot fights from the USA were shown in the middle of the night.stujones wrote:Is ard a terrestial german channel, also what is the population of germany - is 8.9 particularly good?

Jab: by "sold" i meant in the marketing sense rather than people paying for the channel... ie if you do proper advertising for the events...
my favourit stat 16million watched Eubank V Benn 2..... thats over 25% of the whole population......... which must be equivalent to every male between 10 and 50 years old![[icon_wink.gif] ;-)](./images/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif)

i think more than 15 millons over here are only possible with a new heavy weight world champion or a fight like Klitschko vs Sam because the Turks have a higher percentage on boxing fans. all turks in Europe would watch this fight. regarding the rankings and the situation at the WBC such a fight is not impossible....

Very true. Another fight or two with the WBC int. and he could be next up after Rachman. OR if Klitchko is out for the year, could it be Rachman-Sam for the interim title?BubiScholz wrote:i think more than 15 millons over here are only possible with a new heavy weight world champion or a fight like Klitschko vs Sam because the Turks have a higher percentage on boxing fans. all turks in Europe would watch this fight. regarding the rankings and the situation at the WBC such a fight is not impossible....
Yes, 8.9 is good for boxing by the sounds of it, but it is good for sport or good generally? What is the ratings for the number 1 soap - what is the rating for the football?BubiScholz wrote:8.9 is really good, one of the best quotes. this year the record was DM-Tiozzo with 8 millions. 500,000 is a good rating for boxing on Sky, but it is still poor when compared to other things.

I do worry about this rumoured return to ITV, before I was looking forward to it - now I not sure if the timing is right. The station is in turmoil both in programme output and financially - it needs to settle down. They have become obessed with D- list celebrities, I can see a Bravo esque presentation and Boxing will do shite in the ratings.
Celebrity wrestling (possibly the worst show in TV history) made about 3.5 million according to reports. That is piss poor, whilst that show was surely never going to be a success people have lost faith in ITV. If something new comes up I think people will not tune in because every new idea they put forward gets ruined.

regard the time! at 11 in the evening those figures are absolutely top. football has more, but not that late in the evening. the number 1 soap at 7.40 has less viewers. there were some broadcasts at the olympics (Biathlon, Ski Jumping, Gymnastics) with more spectators but Boxing gets more and more spectators in order to take place #2 after football.stujones wrote:Yes, 8.9 is good for boxing by the sounds of it, but it is good for sport or good generally? Well, it depends what sort of presentation team they put together I suppose. No official annoucement has been made in any case, so we're all jumping the gun.

it works because the fights are all shown on free tv and because both promoters have about 20 world class fighters under contract. the best european fighters except Golota,Nelson,Calzaghe,Hatton and Mormeck.stujones wrote:Thanks for the info Bubi - that sounds promising, whether it will work here is another matter.

Very true, although I do have some fears that it is not going to be great - like I do with ITV generally. Just because they once knew how to present live boxing - doesn't mean they still can. Look at the Beeb, in the mid 80's they were the boxing channel - we all remember the Honeyghun and Bruno fights, they were on the Beeb.jamesmcdonnell wrote:stujones wrote:I do worry about this rumoured return to ITV, before I was looking forward to it - now I not sure if the timing is right.
