none of the big guns at heavyweight are interested anymore cos he's lost his meaningful fights at heavyweight.

he holds the iba title and seems to think he's some kind of legit champion.

i remember he once derided eubank's wbo title.

how times change.

he's still tough and wily enough to get by at boxing for a bit longer.
These boxers must only go into MMA because they are broke. Why else would they bother, its a totally different sport to boxing. Hell why doesnt Toney challenge Roger federer or Ronnie OSullivan. MMA is just as alien to Boxing as Snooker or Tennis.

I'd pay to see it! According to Crusader this would be a 50/50 match!

exittored wrote:This fight just proved that Courture is a better wrestler then Toney

I’m actually ashamed to say I gave it a watch even with full knowledge what was going to happen, its like a kid at Christmas who knows deep down all they’re getting is a pair of socks but convincing themselves its really a Playstation 3 or i Pad

Toney was a sitting duck from the start and his feet were like cement blocks and his boxing style was the worst possible one that was going to transfer to mma in the same way Randy's style would be terrible to transfer to boxing.

Randy did what was best for him to win, not what was best to make an exciting fight so i take nothing away from him and no sour grapes should be spoken about him.

The person to blame apart from Toney is obviously Dana White for exploiting a washed up possibly brain damaged fat boxer who couldn't get licenced in most states of America and using him to make some type of statement that mma is better then boxing in terms of combat....actually it did the opposite for me.

It took a former Olympic level wrestler over 3 minutes to choke out a complete novice on the ground wheras it took Ray mercer a split second to knockout Tim Slyvia with his hands..I know which one I’d rather use the next time I get into a street fight(which is almost never nowadays)

Back to White....this filthy fuker saying things like 'We are going to make an example of James Toney' just shows he's a complete turd and then matching him against the worst style match-up possible in his first contest when it was sure to go to the ground in seconds.

If he really cared about his fans, he should have matched Toney against someone at who least was going to keep it standing up...like a Liddell or Slyvia type mma guy who can have kicks to compensate their disadvantage against a former world champion boxer....it would have been thrilling to have seen that but instead we got a Boxer who didnt even get a chance to throw a punch and that is the sad part as it should have been an honour for the fans to see what a 3 weight division former champion boxer could have done in the octagon with 4 oz gloves....the ufc fans were SCREWED last night and they are too stupid to realise it!
Toney chased White for this fight. White did not approach Toney. Toney wanted to make a statement. Toney got exposed.

All Toney's fault.

Any video footage of the fight? Watched a pal of mine Ian Cooper fight a lad in an MMA event up in Sunderland a couple of months ago. Cooper still very tasty for a 35-year-old. Fit and sharp. Still boxes unlicensed after having his pro license revoked after a spell in jail. Same thing happened. Lad didn't want to know and just bided his time before taking Ian to the floor and then basically playing him like a set of bongo's. Was shocking to see and I was shouting at the ref to break them up but of course such antics are allowed in MMA. Left a very bitter taste in the mouth. Ian said after once they have u on the deck it's Goodnight Irene.

Ha good point !

I didn't see it ( and yes be good to see video ) but feel sorry for a proud warrior like Toney getting humiliated like that - he's never quit in his life before, against some of the hardest badest punchers on the planet. Was he broke ??
No idea what he was thinking, I'm sure he thought he would win, no matter how mad that seems.
And it's irelevant to boxing, a fat overweight ex champ, 20 years past his best ? So what, means nothing, and does it really matter what the MMA fans think? May as well worry about what golf fans think of boxing.

2 entirely different sports. Boxers specialise in stand up fighting with hands and that is it, as soon as a fight goes into a clinch they are separated. Real fighting involves kicking distance, boxing, knees, elbows, where Muay Thai uses 8 methods of striking as opposed to 2 in boxing, then wrestling / judo distance and then ground fighting - boxers specialise in a very tiny niche, enough to beat the average man in the street but not a competent mma fighter unless they land a punch very quickly

As much as i love boxing and have done since i was a little kid. MMA is much more entertaining and much better value for money. At least once a month there is a great card full of exciting fights, a weekly mma live show, the ultimate fighter franchise.

Theres been two or three decent high profile boxing fights this year with poor undercards. Too much politics stopping the best fights and poor coverage of the world scene on british tv.

The Toney fight dont meen nowt, he had a punchers chance and that was all. Randy should have punished him for longer for all the shit he spoke.

I love boxing when the decent fights come around but love MMA/UFC all the time because its highly entertaining. (apart from some of the un-agressive wrestlers!!)

Not true really as ufc 118 was pretty boring but yes it can sometimes be entertaining in the same way the Toughman series in boxing used to be.

You can definately use Boxing to win in mma as your principle skill but you still need to put in the training to avoid takedowns or learn how to tie up your opponent if you do go down which Toney didn't do at all.

Here are some examples of mma fighters with a boxing background.

Ok so James Toney got beat in his first ever mma fight against one of their all time greats who was ufc heavyweight champion in 2008, imagine throwing in Randy couture in his first ever boxing fight against ex World Champion Sam Peter, he'd get splattered.

Don't say he deserved it because he talked smack...thats the reason Dana white chose him to sell the fight as he knew he'd talk smack and hype the fight. If you wanted a proper Boxing vs MMA fight then he would have made Jeremy Williams vs Randy but that may have actually been competitive and he didn't want that, toney was a much safer choice with his age, lack of work ethic and weight issues.

Having analysed the fight again, yes Toney was bad and came in totally unprepared and untrained but it wasn't quite as bad second viewing, more just ungainly seeing toney looking like a beached whale on the floor.

Look he was being trained by a family friend who had never trained anyone before for a mma fight and there was a total amateurishness about the whole preparation. Not only coming in too heavy but also not knowing how to tie your opponent up on the floor which could have made him survive the first round.

What was funny was that Toney was using his hands to try and punch from the ground and even choke Randy when he should have been locking his hands up, even basic knowledge of this probably would have saved his ass in the first round. He also needed to be nimble with his footwork from the very start but had no footwork whatsoever so was a sitting target for a leg shoot.

I doubt nothing would have saved Toney from getting beat as he just isn't a disciplined enough athlete in boxing let alone in another fighting arena like mma so he got what he deserved more on those grounds then his verbal assaults.

That was one of the saddest, most pathetic things I've seen in sport. Jesus.

I really, really don't get MMA at all. It's just too ugly and brutal for me. Hey, it's all about opinions though.

Good point Macho, for those who are completely new to MMA it does take a little time to get into. I trained in judo and wado ru karate from a very early age so it was no problem for me to accept it, but I think that most people who are interested in boxing could get into MMA if they watched it a few times. It's a very entertaining combat sport and not nearly as brutal as it initially might seem to a boxing fan.

Boxing seems more brutal. Most of the time the MMA guys are only throwing arm punches.

The blood injuries in MMA do seem worse at times, whether this is down to the quality of the cut men I do not know, and obviously there are the odd breaks and dislocations, but personally I enjoy watching it and I don't think it's any more brutal than boxing. However, I completely understand how fans of boxing might feel put off by the sight of fighters being punched or elbowed in the face when they are on the floor — boxing appears very gentlemanly by comparison.

Ian, I don't know how much MMA you have watched, mate, and if you don't like it, you don't like it BUT... if you have only had limited exposure through terrible match-ups like the one the other night, I would advise you to watch a bit more of the sport and try and gen up on some of the technicalities. It is a terrific sport, just like boxing is a terrific sport.
I haven't watched much, I'll be honest. I did go to a minor show in Sheffield years ago and the promotion of it was fantastic...though it wouldn't have to do much to knock the 'experience' of small hall boxing into a cocked hat.

I'm not keen on all the grappling stuff - that seems to be the more brutal aspect to me when the limbs look like they're about to snap, plus the choking, etc.

Boxing seems a much more pleasant experience, aesthetically.

I like it , and the reason is simple , my sons were brought up in the gym , but my youngest become a turn coat , he took up wrestling ha ha .

Well once he hit his twenties , he was a accomplished wrestler , Only ever lost a couple of bouts , but in the gym , i would glove up with him and even to this day , i can get it over him , , I just know my distance too well , plus i'm not shy at saying , remember i'm your dad ha ha

Any way my eldest said to me last year , have you ever wrestled the facker dad , i said no he said try it , So he come down the gym for one our training nights , ( myself and my sons all train together at least twice a week ) I said c'mon young fella i'm gonna give you a chance tonight we won't spar we'll wrestle .

Fack me gents , he tied me up in knots and at one stage , held me down with his legs over my shoulder , facked if i know how , but while pissing himself laughing said to his brother , pass me a drink bro , and calmy started sucking on his water bottle while he held me down , , It was only cos i said i'll tell ya mam he let me up ha ha .

It was funny cos , he kept repeating it over and over till i said enoughs enough . nut now when watch the ufc with him i have a new found respect , technicly its very very good

when i started watching the UFC videos in the mid/late 90s, i was expecting spectacular kicks, brutal knees and savage elbows: i didn't think it'd be like chuck norris movies, more like "tong po" from the van damme film, KICKBOXER. i didn't think it'd be mostly mauling/wrestling (and ti was also obvious that they were showcasing the best BJJ artists vs lesser combatants from other backgrounds/styles). i still find it hard to get into, find it hard to see who's doing what and about as enjoyable as a clinch in a boxig match. but i did enjoy maurice smith, the world class kickboxer who crossed over, stopping BJJ fighter conan with a brilliant head kick (don't think this was UFC, some other tournament). and also marco ruas, "king of the streets", with his brutally efficient style. and st. pierre, with his agile and entertaining way of fighting. but these seem to be exceptions, at least to me.

ppl say about boxing being dead, or being inferior, but we had a classic battle last weekend, the jr flyweight unification between giovanni segura and ivan calderon. i'd much rather watch that kind of sharp, brutal, sustained punching.

Movie-fu is the reason why I couldnt get iinto MMA straight away

I think I watched one too many jet li movies and so when I hear a man say his expert in wing chun/wu shu I'm expecting somersaults, and fly kicks etc

Once I realised that was not the case I watched it with a more open mind and enjoyed it to some extent
