Cinderella man: Jason Booth

32-year old Nottingham man Jason '2 smooth' Booth faces a stiff challenge in the form of Canadian boxing sensation Steve Molitor in two weeks time.

But the popular super bantamweight has already fought the fight of his life outside the ropes, with alchoholism and views the IBF world title attempt as a dream opportunity, one he hadn't have imagined possible just a few short years ago.

"If I hadn't had boxing, I'd be dead, the drink would have beaten me. I've got my kids now, they're my focus and I think I've just grown up" said Booth candidly in a recent interview with BBC sport.

Those troubled times lurked around Booth's younger days, but the demons wouldn't fully take control until Booth lost the IBO version of the title to Ireland's Damaen Kelly back in December 2004.

Out in the boxing wilderness, without his title and show dates to focus on, Booth found his days becoming a blur of booze and depression.

"My day used to start with drinking cider from a plastic cup to stop the shakes. Then, if I couldn't find any booze, I would pick up cans from the gutter and drink the dregs." admitted Booth.

"At one point my pancreas was giving out and my liver count was off the graph. Two years ago a doctor told me it was stop boozing or die."

But the power of boxing promoter Frank Maloney, along with the love and care supplied by partner Sarita and long standing friend and trainer Tony Harris and not forgetting manager Jimmy Gill - saw Booth take to his bed and go through the tremors and cold sweats for several weeks until his dependancy had subsided enough for him to resume a normal existence.

As the fog cleared from Booth's life, he began a new approach. Beginning with tentative workouts to see what was left. To everyone's surprise, underneath the rust and inactivity, his boxing tools were in perfect order.

Following intensive training to regain his health and fitness, he was thrown a lifeline by Frank Maloney, to return and see what was left.

It was a decision that has now reaped dividends for the everyone, as Booth went from an undercard fight against Abdul Mghrbel at the Barnsley metrodome to a clutch of Commonwealth titles at Bantam and Super Bantamweight.

The move up in weight class has seen the 5'5" fighter, punch with greater authority, most notably against Michael Hunter who he picked apart and forced to retire at the start of the 5th round.

Slick IBF champion Molitor

Hunter, who is a common opponent of Molitor's too, had taken the IBF champion on in 2006 and was stopped in 5 rounds.

With what many consider a tall order in front of him, Booth is quietly confident that if he puts in his best effort in, that beating Molitor and taking his title is certainly within reach.

In the lead up to this interesting match-up, Booth has seemed remarkably calm and unfazed by the fight itself - and having been to hell and back in his private life, it can be understood why he is neither scared nor daunted by the task in hand.

For Booth is merely greatful of the spot he finds himself in. But greatful or not, that will not detract from his efforts when that first bell rings.

Booth is a very wily boxer, with experience and savvy. Despite not campaigning too often at world class, Booth has mixed it up in very decent, often avoided company and prevailed as victor. And come September the 11th, the Nottingham fighter will be looking to take the big prize.

"Jason had so many upsets, to put his life back together has been superb." said Maloney, who has stood by Booth amidst his problems and delivered him this title chance.

"Three-and-a-half years ago I thought we'd give him a couple of fights and see how it goes. To be truthful I didn't think he had it in him."

"But now on 11 September he will fight for the ultimate prize in boxing."

With everyone bitching and whingeing about Haye and Audley, I really think that this fight is flying under the radar.

Booth's story is so true of today's council estates, but the guy has regrouped and forged onwards and is now only a couple of weeks away from fighting a LEGIT world title holder.

Molitor is a polished, slick operator. Booth has it all to do. Will he do it? well, maybe the bookies think 'NO' but I really do hope the little guy with the big heart can bring another title to these shores.

This could be a decent fight, with Booth looking healthier and stronger at Super Bantam than at any previous point.

I wish him well and hope he can do the bizz - because here we have a fella deserving of our conversation, who is quietly going about his business and doing his damnest to succeed.

Whats putting me off is I'm having a large punt on Molitor I don't really want to sitting there with a large chuck on the away fighter.

Il be there. Done a 6 pager on Boothy for next Thursday. I think its a tough fight to call. Molitor has fought at a far higher level but he or both could be slipping. Booth arguably in the form of his career before the Marsh fight. Home advantage too but Molitor naturally bigger. Could make a case for both.

Just booked the tickets, been able to pay by paypal was a bonus as I had some cash sitting in there from shíte I'd sold on ebay :TU:

I agree Danny, Molitor is on the slide but I really do think he'll have far to much for Booth.

Booth against Marsh last time out was shipping shots and that's something he won't be able to get away with at world level, I'm going for Molitor to break him down and stop him around about the 7th.

Back in the 1980s, Hartlepool’s John Feeney lost four attempts to win the European bantamweight title, all on points, all away from home. More recently, Jason Booth lost three times for the European flyweight title, all on points, all away from home.
Similarities between two true fighters really show in their direct use of the English language. I bumped into Feeney recently and, among other fights, mentioned his bizarre disqualification against Belfast’s Hugh Russell for apparent misuse of the head. "Robbed", said Feeney, who was slung out in the 13th round in Belfast. He had no more to say on the fight, just "robbed."
Booth also cuts to the chase when he describes his time as an alcoholic, an addiction which cost him two years of his boxing career and almost his life as his ravaged body came close to packing up. His words - "the shakes", "the dregs", "the gutter" - make chilling reading but Jason pulled himself out in 2006 and rededicated himself to the sport, and the smooth-boxing, body punching Nottingham man has earned himself a shot at Canada’s teetotal Steve Molitor for the IBF super-bantamweight title on September 11 in Houghton-le-Spring.
You know, I’m old enough to remember Richard Burton mocking the 1984 death of James Mason, who led a spartan lifetyle as Burton chased the skirt, chewed the fat, sunk the whiskey and sucked the fags. Booth is very much the Burton of boxing: turn up, have a go, lots of talent, largely a waste of it; Molitor is the Mason, always dieting, training, living in the gym, always "The kid" at the age of 30.
Molitor has lost just once in 10 years as a pro (to Panama’s huge and huge-punching Celestino Caballero) and never in this country, where he's always looked hot and outscored one Nicky Booth in a 12-rounder in Brentwood many moons ago now. Those Booths are gutsy fighters. Nicky was down in the first round but dragged himself up and went to the well in an effort to beat Molitor, to the edge of insanity, and he did wind up a bit nuts - who in their right mind wants to fight a slippery southpaw anyway? Well, Jason does, and he is better than his brother and every bit as dogged.
You still wonder about the challenger, you wonder if he can do an Ali against Foreman and win a world title at 32. ("I don’t think he’s going to get up!") You wonder about those European title defeats, one of them to slick southpaw David Gueralt; you wonder if his eyebrows will hold up to the sharp counters of Molitor after he was cut in his last fight; you wonder whether he should be down at bantamweight
Nevertheless, Booth has yet to lose at super-bantamweight and is boxing better than ever with the backing of promoter Frank Maloney - but better than Molitor? Regrettably, one has to say no. Molitor, despite two spells as world champion, looks too fresh for Booth, too big, too fast, too good a boxer. He’s got the legs on him.

I'll be routing for Booth that's for sure. Although Molitor doesn't look like he is the same fighter he was pre-Caballero, I have to agree with Hagler. Molitor, the naturally bigger guy, a southpaw and with slick skills has got to be a big favourite.

Whilst we are all rooting for Jason, I too have had a lumpy bet on Molitor. Jason was very lucky agaisnt Matthew Marsh last time and but for the cut Marsh would probably have won. Marsh would be 12/1 against Molitor. For me Molitor will be too fast too good and too strong.

I just cannot see how Booth can win this fight. Molitar has the edge in every department (apart from the home support)

Obviously I`ll be rooting for Booth, but it is a very tall order indeed.

Gotta love Booth - one hell of a fighter - he can do it all.

Win or lose in his world title bid I hope he stays in the game and passes on his knowledge.

Never realised that the booze had got hold of him THAT badly..

It is remarkable that he has come back so strongly from that level of abuse to his body

Sadly, I do think Booth's fantastic form of late has partly been due to the opponents he has faced. In Matthew Marsh he faced a quality British level fighter, who was live - the rest of his opponents at Super Bantam haven't been as good... and that's part of the reason why he has looked so good.

Deserves the chance though, and I wish him all the best. I just think he is going to come up a little short.

Have faith his families troubles have made him a stronger man and given him a hunger that can make him a champion. I'd go as far as saying if he wins this he should win sports personality of the year for how he has turned his life around.

I take my hat off to Booth for turning his life around. He has come along way and has a lot to be proud of. That said, he is a class below Molitor. Booth is tailor made for the Canadian. Molitor struggles with physically strong fighters who put on the pressure, which Booth obviously is not. Molitor does seem to have declined a bit though, so perhaps with his hometown fans cheering him on, Booth can be more competative than most are predicting.

You won't find a more deserving fighter than J Booth.
Molitor's awkward with his southpaw style but Booth's got a good boxing brain and the ability to adapt mid way through a fight. I see 2 Smooth winning a handy UD and becoming the new IBF Champion of the World.

Don't get me wrong it's not going to be easy, might even have to get off the floor to do it but once he establishes his boxing I can see him pulling away with it in the later rounds, the guys fitness is unbelievable.
