David Chappell, Heavyweight Portsmouth, VA stopped Gary LaFranchi, CA who was making his pro debut. Chappell dominated round 1 with jab after jab after jab. LaFranchi's eye began to swell shut by the middle of the round and by the end of the first round, his eye was completely shut. The doctor asked LaFranchi if he could see out of his left eye and apparently they didn't like the answer he gave them and the fight was stopped in between the first and the second rounds. Time 3:00, winner David Chappell TKO1.
In a very entertaining fight, light heavyweight Alexander Mancera 1-0 from Queens, New York took on Tony "Montana" Juarez, pro debut, from Sacramento. Juarez, who is trained by former world title challenger, Richard "Bam Bam" Duran, was in Mancera's face from the opening seconds of round 1 winging wild shots to the head and body. Mancera, however, kept his cool and used his superior boxing skills to tame the strong brawler and take round 1 by using a very good jab and movement punctuated by uppercuts as Tony "Montana" lept in with strong shots. Rounds 2,3,4 took a similar course with Juarez keeping on the pressure with Mancera picking him apart and shaking Juarez on several occassions. To Juarez' credit, Mancera hit him with tremendous shots but never really had Juarez in trouble of a stoppage. Despite a busted lip, Juarez refused to submit, and Mancera piled on the points. Juarez has nothing to be ashamed of in this fight because Mancera, a former Empire State Games amateur champion in New York, has vastlly more experience
than Juarez. Mancera was the more schooled and polished fighter on this night and with the victory, he goes to 2-0, 1KO. Juarez, falls to 0-1.
