Michael Watson -v- Nigel Benn (1989)

I seem to remember Benn saying something about his pony tail being pulled back so tight it helped his face swell up.

Anyway, what I really wanted to say is I think James is quite right and McCallum would always have beaten Watson. I couldn't beleive McCallum got beat by Kalambay though, and if Herol Graham hadn't had a point deducted he'd have won. McCallum was a great fighter no doubt about it, but he had some close shaves...

McCallum was vulnerable against good defensive fighters who could move, and Kalambay was a bit of an enigma, he put together a pretty impressive run, beating Barklay, McCallum, Sims, DeWitt, before getting nuked with 1 punch by Michael Nunn of all people. When you consider he also beat Herol Graham and a young Steve Collins, he was quite a fighter.

I've never seen the Herol Graham fight with McCallum, but can imagine how his style would have given the fairly slow moving McCallum big fits.

I thought the McCallum fight was one of the worst of his career ( with a hazy recollection at best ) He seemed to go into his shell and there was none of that "cheeky" bombast that I loved about Herol. He would have won even that fight but for the points deduction, but to be honest, I never enjoyed it

Still my favourite UK fighter ever. I saw loads of his fights from Prince Rodney onwards to him beating Paz.

Watched McCallum - Herol and it was an ugly fight. Graham just threw it away, somethign he seemed to do a few times against the very best. He could have beaten McCallum and was well on his way against Julian Jackson

McCallum said afterwards that he never wanted to see Herol Graham again. Ever
