Don't let this happen.

Post by stujones »

Reading teletext, it seems like Amir Khan wants to spoil the four nations winners party and fight Kindelan in Cuba in July. This is seperate to the May 14th show at the Reebok. The Four nations winners will have the opportunity of a live time by going to Cuba and fighting the best in their own back yard. These guys though DESERVE this opportunity as they competed in the respected ABA's and then the four nations.

I will be mightly pissed off if Khan steals their thunder as there is talk of it happening. Come on, Richie Woodhall - you can't let this happen. The four nation winners are the future of the Amateur game, Khan is the future of the pro game.

If it does happen, I will be cheering for Kindelan.

The sooner he turns pro the better as far as I am concerned. Pulling out of the ABA's was a huge mistake.

I doubt very much they will allow him to fight in Cuba.

I got the impression Woodhall wasn't too impressed with his recent antics, when Woodhall, Bunce and Hatton were discussing him on the 4 nations coverage a few weeks ago. I'd be surprised if he let him go. Is the final decision Woodhalls?

I think his official title is "Performance Manager" or something similar.

Yes that's right, wonder what that means though? Ian Irwin is the performance director for the 'world class' section of the ABA, so perhaps Richie is in charge of the non world-class section, or works underneath Irwin.

I'm glad they've brought Woodhall on board, he's a guy who is obviously still in love with the sport, and it's good to have an ex-champ of recent times on board, he's also outspoken enough to make some waves, and seems intelligent too.

Woodhall was at the london novices so it looks like he is at the grass roots level!!!

I like Richie, always overlooked, olympic medallist, euro and world champ...... they dont come around very often

What's the difference between the way Khan is being managed right now and a professional (this is not a bad Christmas cracker gag...)

He's getting funded £70kpa, being promoted (albeit not yet in name) by allegedly, may well be getting a little taste of the finances / other fiscal attention that will swing his way, gets to pick his own fights and doesn't fight any amateur competitions.

Seems to me that the best thing the ABA can do is to say thanks but no thanks, you're pissing us about despite the fact that every spare penny and more is going straight into your bank account, you're giving nothing in return and your old man wants your kid brother to box for Pakistan.

The ABA surely can't afford to pay a fat retainer to a 17-year-old pro in the knowledge that it's highly unlikely that he will ever box in one of their tournaments ever again, let alone wear a national vest.

Cut the purse strings, take away his medical card, whatever. Team Khan is making a monkey out of the system.

Khan hasn't even turned Pro yet and I'm sick of him already.. He's like a big baby and to be honest would love for Kindelan to knock him out

Bear in mind however, that Khan is probably just the prototype for the future of the sport. The ABA and BBBofC are going to move closer and closer together, and there was talk last year of the two codes mergeing entirely.

Sad to say, I'll be hoping Kindelin puts one on Khan too. Pulling out of the ABA's, some rather sour comments made by Amir on the BBC etc ....I've grown weary of his act. The sooner he pushes off and turns over to the pro's the better.

The things is if Kahn gets dumped on his arse and beat by Kindelen (sp? sorry) on TV he's going to look daft and it'll spoil his marketability for entering into the pro ranks in the general public's eyes. I wouldn't mind a bet that Kahn's first 15 opponents as a pro will be of a worse standard than Kindelen (sp?).

I don't mind the Reebok stadium thing, that for me is quite a good idea - its apparently to help raise funds so why not. However, it the trip back (which I should stress is at the rumour/talk stage) as part of the four nations is the bad one. That experience should be for our future Olympians.

Woodhall seemed as if he still wanted Amir to keep amateur untill at least the Commonwealth games and I do fear it will be "yes, Amir; no Amir, three bags full Amir" while he is still officially in the Amateur code.

Couple of points.

Ian Irwin is not Performance Director, he's retired. The job is now Terry Edward's. Richie Woodhall is Performance Manager.

Amir Khan didn't sign the deal for £70k a year and therefore should not be receiving the £70k funding, however I am told cheques for £20k have been subject to some dispute when it comes to signing them. (not all at ABAE HQ feel the same I guess)

The Reebok stadium gig/ Cuba return, is reportedly sponsored by Virgin Atlantic. Proceeds from the event initially earmarked for Khans Bury ABC are again reported to be split between 4 charities. Call me old fashioned but shouldn't a kidnapped (by the pro's, sponsors and TV) boxing event be put on to raise money for amateur boxing which is desperately in need of finance especially since Sport England reduced the next 4 years funding?

Can't see that happening, most ambox people would walk away.

Make no mistake the deal struck with pro promoters means one thing and one thing only. That the promoters can cherry pick from the upcoming crop of talent on the basis that they will put a stay of execution on the signing so that said talent can win a few medals in major championships thus securing the positions of those doing the deal.

First of all Khan has yet to have his rematch with the cuban , never mind going to cuba. If he does have a rematch and they do, allow him to represent in Cuba, some very serious questions have to be asked
