Body of son of boxing promoter Bob Arum found in Washington's North Cascades

SEATTLE (AP) — A five-day search for the missing son of top boxing promoter Bob Arum ended when a helicopter located John Arum's body on a rugged Washington state mountain in North Cascades National Park, authorities say.

The body of the younger Arum, an experienced mountain climber, was spotted Friday afternoon from a National Park Service helicopter at about the 7,700-foot level on the north face of 8,500-foot Storm King Mountain, park spokeswoman Kerry Olson said.

Previous flights had been made in this area, but recent snow melt made it possible to locate the 49-year-old Seattle environmental attorney's body, she said.

It wasn't possible to retrieve the body, but Olson said it was clear to searchers that Arum was dead.

"There was no doubt of that," she said, adding it appeared that Arum had fallen.

National Park Service workers were trying to develop a plan to recover the body, which is in an area so difficult "that people can't rappel down or climb up to it," Olson said.

The search began Monday after Arum failed to return from a solo weekend trip to scale the mountain, which is about 85 miles northeast of Seattle. Family members said the climb was part of Arum's goal of reaching the summit of the 100 highest peaks in the state.

"His plan was to climb Storm King on Saturday, Aug. 28, so it's probably a safe assumption that he fell that day," Olson said.

Arum's backpack was found Wednesday on a trail on the mountain's less arduous south side, Olson said. The backpack was found at about 7,400-feet along a climbing route, and climbing gear was missing from the pack.

Climbers often take only essential gear to lighten their load while attempting a summit.

Arum's smaller pack was found higher on the mountain on Thursday, and Olson said his body was found about 300 feet below that spot in an extremely steep area with a lot of loose rock.

About 20 people, some using trained search dogs, participated in Friday's search, along with four helicopters, two of them King County sheriff's aircraft with heat-seeking equipment. Counting coordinators and support workers, about 50 people were involved in the search, Olson said.

John Arum's profile on the website of his Seattle law firm, Ziontz, Chestnut, Varnell, Berley and Slonim says he served on the board of the Washington Environmental Council from 1997-2004 and from 2006 until the present.

He got his undergraduate degree in political science from Reed College in Oregon and graduated from the University of Washington Law School.

Other lawyers in his firm did not immediately respond to Associated Press e-mails seeking comment Friday night.

Earlier this week, Bob Arum left Los Angeles to join park rangers coordinating the search effort. He had been on a three-city tour promoting the Nov. 13 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. His stepson, Todd duBoef, took over the tour that also stopped in New York and Dallas.

Representatives of Bob Arum were not immediately available for commentlate Friday night.

Mayweather apologizes for racist tirade

Floyd Mayweather Jr. took to the Internet again on Friday, this time to apologize for a profanity-filled racist rant against Manny Pacquiao that he recorded on uStream.com Thursday.

Mayweather continued to mispronounce Pacquiao’s surname, repeatedly referring to him as “Pooch-ee-ow.” But a day after making racist and homophobic comments on uStream, Mayweather offered an apology to those who were offended.

“I do want to apologize for what happened the other night,” Mayweather said. “I want to apologize to everybody. They felt it was a racist comment that came from me. I don’t have a racist bone in my body, you know. I love everybody. Some of my guys are Muslims. Some of my guys are Jews. Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Mexicans, whites, it doesn’t matter. There is nothing but love in my heart, you know what I’m saying?

“I heard this from a few people. The only thing I want to say is, anybody who was offended by what I said the other day, I apologize as a man. I apologize. Forgive me for saying what I said. I was just having fun. I didn’t really mean it, nothing in a bad way. So let’s stay on this roller coaster ride and keep riding, baby. It’s all love.”

Prior to apologizing, Mayweather embraced two Asian women, who said they were Thai and Chinese. He asked one of them if she spoke Thai and kept asking her to “Speak some Thai.” As he embraced them, he promised them front-row tickets for a fight with Pacquiao. Representatives of each camp twice in the last nine months attempted to make a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, but were unable to finalize a deal.

Mayweather also sent condolences to his former promoter, Bob Arum of Top Rank, with whom he has long had a contentious relationship. The body of Arum’s 49-year-old son, John, was discovered in the Cascade Mountains in Washington state Friday. John Arum appeared to have fallen 300 feet in a hiking accident.

John Arum had been missing for several days and it’s not clear in the video whether Mayweather was aware the body had been discovered. However, he offered consoling words to Bob Arum.

“God bless Bob Arum and his whole family, because I heard that Bob Arum’s son had a bad accident,” Mayweather said. “Love to the whole Arum family.”

In the original video, he referred to Pacquiao, a native of the Philippines, as “a yellow chump,” and said “Once I stomp the midget, I’ll make that [expletive] make me a sushi roll and cook me some rice.” In addition, he said, “I’m going to cook that [expletive] with cats and dogs. Have some rice with a little barbecue dog.” He also referred to Pacquiao by using a derogatory slang term for a homosexual.

So...lets look at this from a parents perspective shall we?
Your son is showing a real interest in some of the tougher sports.Hes an aggressive kid and you think he could use an outlet and,develop himself physically and mentally. You can see hes a natural scrapper and has tons of balls.
He comes to you for advice. Do you encourage him to get into boxing, with an individual like "Pretty Boy" here, or do you suggest say wrestling in high school and possibly college after?

You can't mention Jerry without mentioning Mike Quarry . . . What about their brother-in-law, Mike Nixon?

I know both Mikes very well. Nixon was Glendale (via San Francisco after Binghampton,N.Y.) which is on the edge of the Valley.
Jerry began his career in the Valley behind Johnny Flores garage in Pacoima, mid 50's.
Mike Quarry also lived in the Valley as a child, but he didn't start his career there.
Nixon was more a Valley guy than Mike Quarry, but both will get mention.
Jerry is known as a pro as a Bellflower resident, but as a kid his family moved all over the L.A. area.
His mother and my grandfather were talking one day at the gym.
Arwanda Quarry told my grandfather that they lived in Burbank for awhile, close to what was Lockheed Aircraft, in the 50's.
They also were neighbors with Johnny Flores in Pacoima when Jerry began fighting as a Jr. glover.
Mike was more of a Bellflower, La Mirada, Orange County guy.
It may seem strange that the two brothers were handled by completely different coaches and management teams.
Their careers were as different as their boxing styles.
