ABCs in Leeds?
ABCs in Leeds?
So I'm moving to Leeds very soon to resume my studies (at the grand old age of 27), and would like to find a decent amateur boxing club in or near Burley or that sort of area to box at. Where would you folks recommend?

Burmantofts is probably closest to Burley from the three suggestions so far, the Burmantofts ABC is about 5 mins walk from St.James hospital if you know where that is.

Meanwood ABC is the nearest to Burley/ Headingley but not the easiest to get to. Danny Thornton's club is the easiest to get to but if you have a car you can easily drive up to Burmantofts.
As far as I know Rick Manners is still training also at his gym off Mabgate, which is pretty close to the city centre but his club isn't affiliated with the ABA. He's set up his own body called the ABU.
They have some amateur lads training at Rall's gym as well which is opposite Manners' gym. Carl Johanneson trains at Ralls in the evenings.
Or if you just want to get fit or maybe train with EBU boxers you could try Lee Murtagh's gym in Richmond Hill.

Bateson gym used to be based at Burley Hill but they shut down and merged with Burmantofts in Harehills.

As far as I know it's still up open, apologies if mistaken
I notice no one has mentioned Sharky's place on Meanwood Rd, by all accounts it's a good gym if you can endure the noise!!

Re: ABCs in Leeds?
Gangsters has been around for years, I trained down the road at Tigers boxing gym in 2005 and the general consensus in there was Tigers was better (although I hear gangsters did a lot more sparring)
Tigers is good, Jason and Miller ran it at the time, top blokes, nice atmos, and with a new term coming it will be entertaining as a few beer-raveged students give boxing a stab, cry, spew their guts up, never come again.

Gangster's seems to have closed down (and recently - the sign is still up) so I'll probably give Tiger's a try. Thanks for all your replies.

What uni are you studying at Dookus? Leeds met and Leeds Trinity now have their own little boxing clubs. Pro cruiserweight China Clarke http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer runs the Trinity one.

Don't park your car up at Harehills.
