John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
After Saturdays nights defeat to New Commonwealth Champion Stephen Smith, former British Featherweight Champ John Simpson has decided to move down to SuperBantamweight.. Simpson revealed that he almost quit the sport after Saturday nights defeat as he felt he clearly won the fight.. He said
He said: “I believe I won the fight, so walking away would be daft. I’m probably going to go to super bantamweight now.
“I still consider myself the best feathwerweight in Europe but I can see a bigger future for me at super bantamweight, so that’s the plan. I’ll come back stronger for what’s happened.”
John could fight again on a bill in Glasgow later this year, but in the meantime his family and supporters are helping him come to terms with the loss of his belt.
He said: “I want to thank everyone for the support on Saturday, it was superb.

John seems a good lad and a very good domestic fighter so it would be a shame to see him quit. Although life might not be any easier down a weight, I know Rendall Munroe and Jason Booth have moved on from the domestic scene, but you have 2 very good newcomers in Kris Hughes and Scott Quigg on their way up into the domestic title scene. Even so, good luck John.

Good luck to him he's as tough as they come and always gives his best. At 122 he could be a monster, i'd love to see him face Munroe or Booth especially if either can win there up coming title fights.DougieC30 wrote:After Saturdays nights defeat to New Commonwealth Champion Stephen Smith, former British Featherweight Champ John Simpson has decided to move down to SuperBantamweight.. Or it could drain him - I didn't see the Smith fight but he's always seemed so strong at the weight so I'd be surprised if he's been competing one divison too high for so long...El Raincoat wrote:At 122 he could be a monster.
Re: John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
Would have liked to have seen the Swifty rematch.
Re: John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
smith won the fight and imo would win the rematch a lot clearer, simpson probably thinks the same, good career move for him the british will probably become vacant soon

Would have liked to have saw it too... John will be strong down at SB, hope he gets a fight in soon
Re: John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
Good carrer move, provided he can make the weight comfortably. He'll be a beast at SB!
Re: John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
I agree. I just want to see the rematch so we can see the true Swifty.diggler wrote:smith won the fight and imo would win the rematch a lot clearer, simpson probably thinks the same, good career move for him the british will probably become vacant soon
Definitely. He'll be force proving he doesn't have to drain too hard.DougieC30 wrote: Would have liked to have saw it too... John will be strong down at SB, hope he gets a fight in soon

Super Bantam is tough division domesticly..Munroe&Booth then below them Marsh,Quigg,Owen,Moran,Wale,Savage,Lyon,Roberts,Hughes,Walsh,Frampton,MacDonald possibly Davies if he loses his challange at the weight below...Some great fights could be made therestevek3lly wrote:John seems a good lad and a very good domestic fighter so it would be a shame to see him quit. everybdy on this forum bar you scousers saw that simpson nickd the fight by 1 or 2 rounds IMO, swifty looked upper domestic/european class, hope it was an off night for the lad,all he wanted to do was hold.jBacca wrote:I agree. He'll be a beast at SBW if he isnt drained, hes one of the strongest FW so at SBW he'll be almost unstoppable, I felt he deserved the decision against Smith anyway

Re: John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
I watched the fight again last night and although it was very close, I just didn`t see Simpson winning it. I know others on here disagree, but he gave too much away in the beginning and end of the fight. Middle rounds he did much better and took most of them, but not enough to win the fight for me.alexpaterson wrote:He'll be a beast at SBW if he isnt drained, hes one of the strongest FW so at SBW he'll be almost unstoppable, I felt he deserved the decision against Smith anyway
If he can keep the strength at Super Bantam, he will be a great shout for a European title.

I`m not a scouser. I`m from Leeds, so no reason to be biased.diggler wrote:you must be a biased scouser then
Mate, everyone scores a fight differently. I`ve watched it start to finish twice and came to the same score both times, Smith by a round (closer than the two proffesional judges that gave it to Smith)
Re: John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
I was being sarcastic mate I've scored twice aswell when I was there had smith by three second had him up by 2

Bollocks again lad. There were jocks who scored it for Swifty.HomeOfBritishBoxing wrote:everybdy on this forum bar you scousers saw that simpson nickd the fight by 1 or 2 rounds IMO, swifty looked upper domestic/european class, hope it was an off night for the lad,all he wanted to do was hold.jBacca wrote:I agree. Swifty broke his hand early, explains quite a bit about the way the fight panned out.

Re: John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
simpson at 122- yes, obviously, he'll be strong. but he'll be pretty flatfooted next to a lot of the lads down there.

I am a geordie so there impartial in that i cant stand sweaty socks or the car thieves!!
DISCLAIMER: joke
Smith won the fight by 2/3 rounds and would win more handily in a re-match.
Don't get sucked in by this bollocks about 'going away and having to wrestle the title away'.
Its about who won more rounds and Smith won at least 7 rounds of that fight IMO.
He deserves praise for doing so in his 10th fight, Simpson deserves praise for his reign and for defending against Smith.
Wish both of them the best moving forward

Re: John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
Simpson won the fight for me, he should have nicked a close decision in my opinion. Not sure about this move in weights, agree with a few others that he looks so strong at SUper-feather. He didn't do anything wrong in the fight so why shift a weight. Ah well he knows his own body best , will be interesting to see how it goes.
Re: John Simpson Goes to SuperBantam Weight
Would like to wish John all the best for his move down to super bantam. The rematch with myself is always there whenever he wants it.
As for myself...I went to see Mike Hayton the hand specialist and he confirmed the hand injury and said I have also ripped the tendon on the middle knuckle on my left hand. I am having an operation Monday to repair the damage and may be out for 3 months. Will post when the op is done.
