i think it only looks that planned in retrospect. i believe holmes
simply did not believe himself that he could be great. i think this
is more likely than him having a plan to wait five years until the
greats are gone. and i guess he is still calling out foreman ... :).

but i do get your point.
Don't get me wrong, here --- I'm not accusing Holmes of some dastardly plan to sit out the Golden Age. That would be absurd, LOL --- I'm simply saying it was fortunate (in a way) he did in fact get going so late. He's the same age as Foreman, yet hadn't even turned pro by the time Foreman had actually won the championship. That's unusual. One thing it did do was steer him toward maturing as a fighter at a time (late-76 through to 77, IMO) when the, "Big Five" were either fading fast or already gone entirely.

That said, you have a good point about not many men starting their careers in their mid-twenties (I believe Holmes was 24, or 25?) & attaining such high standards of legend.

On the other hand, I think your article has missed the boat by a good few years. Holmes as the underdog has passed by --- he now gets the recognition he deserved. He's no longer under-rated.
You aren't going to correct his grammar?
I am absolutely not. That would be poor form.

Jesus wrote:Larry Holmes was a good boxer he was just unfortunate to be involved in the piss poor post-ali era of heavyweight boxing......never really followed his career much, only ever see one of his fights against cooney but other then that i can't name 1 person who he has beat (other then old, washed up, half crippled Ali of course but that dont count).
Like someone round these parts once said of Holmes' opposition...

"Hey, someone had to stop Scott LeDoux's reign of terror..." :DD
I just saw on HBO that LeDoux has A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig's Disease). It is quite horrible and he certainly doesn't have many good years left. Doctors have found that A.L.S. is also caused by repeated concussions and head trauma.

Off topic I know, but I saw his name and it reminded me. If anyone gets a chance to see the segment on HBO's Real Sports it is very good.

It concerns apostrophes, however.

I know it wasn't perfect, but he asked for an interpretation of his writing style.

It's hard to sympathize and glorify a man who constantly whined about not being given his just due,all the while avoiding as many top contenders in his own era as Larry Holmes did.

I certainly wouldn't rate his resume higher than that of Tyson,Holyfield or Lewis - don't see anybody rating them within the top three of any ATG heavyweight list.
