David is reigning English champ, and has better form at the weight than McDermott - get well soon - who was coming up. So you now have a better matched fight for what is a volntary defence.
As for the Anderson comparison, Mendy outworked David over 3 while for me and many others he outworked Kenny over 8. at best Anderson scraped a close verdict and has been rewarded with a final eliminator v Quigley. If that happens, the winner will be made mandatory challenger. David had to rely on a voluntary so is actually behind Anderson in the Board pecking order.
Gutted to hear about McDermott, but what now for Smigga?

Paul Smith now defends his British super-middleweight title against Paul David in his home city of Liverpool next month (October 23).
Smith, whose younger brother Stephen recently won the Commonwealth featherweight title, was due to defend against Dudley’s Darren McDermott until Darren suffered a head injury in sparring that required an operation. Thankfully, it seems that Darren will make a complete recovery, and it was Smith himself who posted the news on the boxrec forum, which was a lovely touch.
"Smigga" won the title from fellow Scouser Tony Quigley on a hard-earned decision last year and successfully defended in another all-Liverpool affair with Tony Dodson in March, also on a hard-earned decision. The champion, 27, has proved himself the Liverpool strongman
To David, 26, who comes off a loss to talented teenager Patrick Mendy in the final of Prizefighter in the summer but has never been stopped in 17 tough fights as a pro, 12 of them wins. He earned his crack when he stopped Nottingham’s Tyrone Wright in seven rounds for the English super-middleweight title, having previously conceded a thrilling 10-round decision to the same man, both times in Nottingham.
From the boxing ghost town of Northampton, David knows all about fighting away from home so the trip to Liverpool will not faze the durable, tricky, sharp-hitting challenger whatsoever. Nevertheless, Smith carries the heavier dig and is fancied to punch out a clear points win.

I expect smith to stop david late, i think david causes him problems early but smith takes over in the middle rounds and stops him late.
