I thought he was brilliant in prizefighter, but this is a real step up in class. Willie obviously has financial backing to get Martinez at home so his promoter must have a great deal of confidence. Should be a cracker whatever happens.

:D
This is going to be a fight to the fvcking death. This is going to be genocide :OhYes: :OhYes: Up next if he wins is a voluntary against young Hyland. Then a mandatory against Munroe. Munroe will be the mandatory after is loses (probably) against Nishioka.
Who knows if he won that Brian Peters would work his magic and bring Poonsawat back for a world title fight. This would be in Limerick. I met Willie shortly after his prizefighter win and spoke to him for a few minutes. I told him I'd love to see a fellow Limerick lad fight for a world title in The Point/02. Willie replied "The O2, Jaysus no lad! Thomond park all da way lad 8) !"

Willie has the charisma and although the Irish public don't know much about him now, if things go well this fella can be a legend :D I'm probably over rating Willie (by a long way), but jaysus we can dream :TU: Willie is a traveller and there tough, but Limerick travellers are harder than whalebone. I could see it in his eyes.

I think you are overrating him, if he wins this fight i doubt he will defend once then get a world title fight! munroe had to make about 5 ebu defences and 2 eliminators to get his. I like Willie he seems like a good guy and is great to watch, he is also a good solid fighter but european class i think will be his limit unless he improves dramaticlly

Irish prospect Willie Casey steps up in a challenge for the European super-bantamweight title against Kiko Martinez in a real coming together of punchers in Limerick on Bonfire weekend (Saturday, November 6).
This one almost guarantees fireworks because Casey, who hails from Limerick, has raced to 10-0 (6) as a pro and served notice of his power and potential when he carved his way through Prizefighter earlier this year in London to win the event in style while Martinez smashed Dublin’s Bernard Dunne in 86 seconds when he last fought an Irishman in Ireland and has taken out 17 of his 23 victims in all, an astonishing number for his division, shades almost of Wilfredo Gomez.
Nevertheless, the 28-year-old Casey, mentored by the shrewd Barry McGuigan, looks ready to rip the major European belt from a much younger man who looks much the older fighter. Martinez blasted his way to 17-0 as a pro but was then trounced by Leicester’s Rendall Munroe (twice) and by Takalani Ndlovu of South Africa, and the Spaniard has never looked the same since, although he picked up the vacant EBU belt by outscoring an Armenian in his last fight.
Martinez, 23-3 (17), is known to struggle to make super-bantamweight and once blew a payday with Wayne McCullough because he came in way overweight so you wonder how he keeps dragging his body down to 8st 10lbs and he was skeletal at the weigh-in last time. Add to that the frenetic atmosphere generated on the night by Casey’s fans, and it looks grim for the visitor.
Of course we said all this prior to Kiko’s showdown with the previously unbeaten Dunne three years ago in Dublin, and Martinez rocked Dunne every time he hit him and put him over twice in a quite stunning display of power, but southpaw Munroe was lurking and now southpaw Casey is lurking.
The home man comes through into the world rankings.

Really looking forward to this. If Willie keeps it tight and compact for the first 3/4 rounds and survives the inevitable Martinez hayemakers, the Spaniard could start to wilt and Casey can start landing "big" himself. Big Bang by late stoppage.

Any recommendations for a hotel close to UL, Feargal?

The Kilmurray Lodge is about a 10 minute walk from the UL Arena in Castletroy.

I warmed to him. Big ask this but plucky little battlers have been pulling off the upsets of late. I like your attitude too, boxing should be about dreams as well as the the bitter realities.

Good luck Willie, hope you can do the same as Munroe did against him. Take away his power and he is really not all that.

:witzend: NOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I can't go to the fight, have to go to the woman's graduation :verysad:

That hotel recommended I think is ok Deno. It's close to UL though. The atmosphere at the fight is going to be savage. All of southill will be there. Southill is a rough area but the place has savage community spirit and that will transfer to the arena. Deno make sure you get a munster jersey to wear, if you wear your déise strip you're likely to get beat up :geek:

Jaysus, I wouldn't dare wear a Waterford jersey in Limerick in normal circumstances let alone surrounded by the Southill massive!

I have a Munster jersey but I might get a "Big Bang" t-shirt made for the night. :OhYes:

Best of luck to Willie, ill be there as it is not too far from where i live, the only thing im concerened about is all the knacks that will be there as was the case when he last fought in Limerick, young ones running all over the place while willie and andy were fighting, willie is a hero in some parts of Limerick, but in other parts if the name Casey from southill is mentioned people get turned off fast as the Caseys were part of the reason Limerick got a bad name in the 80s and 90s,but i wish him the best and i hope there will be a good card,it must be the first time a European title will be fought in our city.

Should be some fight. Casey has a serious engine on him.
Will be a great atmosphere too. While Andy Lee fights always have a decent atmosphere, this one will be electric and something very different.
