Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
Holmes would dominate him, mid round TKO.
Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
I think I agree with you Saad although I have to confess I need to study Rocky more.
I watched an ESPN classic 10 minute short on him. It was terribly sad when they spoke about Rockys death. I felt real revulsion when one of his friends stated Rocky had been decapitated in the aeroplane accident. A great feeling of sadness has been with me when i think of the tv show.
I imagine if Rocky had lived to a ripe old age like Jack Dempsey we may have seen him ringside at fights like Ali-Frazier, Norton-Ali III, Holmes-Cooney, Tyson-Spinks, Foreman-Holyfield, Bowe-Golota.
I love the old style champions introductions they used to do at Madison Square Garden in the 1970's.
Anyway God rest the Rocks soul in peace.

Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
I think Larry was being objective when he assessed the Rock's chances in a public forum. And he should know since after all he is Larry Holmes. Why bother with further analysis?
Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
holmes by 15 round 1 sided beat down
Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
marciano would not stand a chance, holmes is to bigger, faster, and has a jab that would rip marciano apart, holmes wins by first round kayo
Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
So . . . Marciano couldn't last as long as Scott Frank or Lorenzo Zanon . . .mrshot wrote:marciano would not stand a chance, holmes is to bigger, faster, and has a jab that would rip marciano apart, holmes wins by first round kayo

Holmes. Decisively.
Dempsey & Frazier would be a much tougher assignment for him.

Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
ray, apparently Larry was being charitable when he shared with the media that the Rock wasn't qualified to carry his marble bag.
I would favor Larry, slightly, but only if he kept Rocky well at bay and stayed smart every minute of every round. Something he wasn't able to do with the likes of Rinaldo Snipes. So you JUST HAVE to give Rocky a shot at having the last word between those two. Rocky won't win a decision, but I don't think that means Rocky couldnt win the fight.

Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
Larry by jab, jab, jabbing...for 15 rounds.
Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
Holmes was going past 10 rounds in his prime with guys like Weaver, Shavers, Snipes and Cooney... Marciano had a better chin than all those guys and was harder to hit with a flush shot.
Holmes was nimble of foot in his prime though and Marciano would have to do a lot of chasing. He needs to be able to do a Snipes and catch Holmes with the right.
I'd imagine Holmes wins but it wouldn't be a shut out. I'd think 10-5 or something like that.

Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
marciano puts up a tough fight, gets in his licks but over the distance it is
all Holmes.
Sorry Rock.
all Holmes.
Sorry Rock.

marciano weighed 189 pounds and was very powerful for his size but a heavyweight champion from that era would not stand a chance against more modern era championraylawpc wrote:So . . . Are you being rhetorical or do you really believe Marciano could not have survived one round with Holmes?mrshot wrote:marciano weighed 189 pounds and was very powerful for his size but a heavyweight champion from that era would not stand a chance against more modern era championraylawpc wrote:So . . . It's called trolling.
Ignore it.

Agree completely. I don't see Marciano going 15 rounds with Holmes, he would be a bloody mess.
p.s. Don't want to hijack the thread, but it is interesting that you have Marciano-Frazier, having pretty similar styles, as a near toss-up, yet you view (quite rightly, imo) Frazier as a "much tougher assignment" for Holmes.

Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
I'm trying my best not to comment on these things anymore, but it's shocking to hear so many say things like "Holmes would have handled Marciano easily". Please substitute other ATG names as in this comment well, because I read these types of comments a lot.
While I too would favor Holmes over Marciano, I would like someone to give a good example of a strong chinned pressure fighter who fought out of a crouch that Holmes had a cake walk with. Saying Holmes wins is one thing, but saying that he would handle him easily seems a stretch. Norton and Weaver both gave Holmes very difficult fights with pressure and neither one fought out of the deep crouch that Marciano used, and I think that would have made Rocky more difficult, despite the size disparity.

Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
True that he never fought anyone out of a crouch. It's also true that his second best punch was his uppercut. Are you saying that Holmes would find Marciano difficult to hit?
As for the predictions, they are just that. If ATG fighters were squaring off everyday there would be quite a few slaughters. Not a chance in the world that every fight would be nip and tuck. I predict what I see. In this case I predict a dominant win for Holmes. I'm often shocked by the actual fights. Just like I would have been if I watched Lloyd Marshall bounce Ezzard off the canvas like a Basketball. Somebody could have predicted that going in too.

Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
i think if marciano would of been able to bulk up and get to at least 210 pounds and carry the weight at the same intensity and have the power and speed he had as he was at 189 then i think he would pummel the heavyweights of today

Yes, good point about the uppercut.
I won't soon forget the one Holmes laid on Weaver.

Re: Rocky Marciano V Larry Holmes.
Marciano wins mid rounds by KO.
