Re: All posters on this forum and there links to boxing?
In the summer of 2000, when I was 16, the BBC had 5 consecutive weekends, with each one showing one of the Rocky films. I was addicted to watching them after that. A couple of months later Audley won gold in Sydney and I made a vow to watch all of of his pro fights, thinking back then he would become a world champ. Through watching his fights on the BBC I became familiar with other fighters, such as Robin Reid and I also watched non-Audley BBC shows and discovered Clinton Woods, Carl Froch, Danny Williams, DAvid Haye. Then when I went away to uni and discovered internet (a late discovery, I know) I found SecondsOut.com and started to learn about the key fighters in international boxing. I also discovered Boxing News in WHSmiths and bought it every week. SInce then I've never looked back

I love this aspect of this site too, active boxers, journos, promoters etc.. posting, I love reading some of the stuff.lefty wrote:I myself am just a great fan of the sweet science but alot of the posters on here seem to have strong connections with boxing whether it be they're pro's themselves like Dilks,Smigga and bomber or just seeming to have connections in the sport. So the nosey git in me would love to know posters links with boxing if you're willing to share of course!
I'm just a fan also, been so since the Rumble in the Jungle (I was 4 when I watched it with my dad). The first proper fight I went to was the night in Lofus Road when McGuigan took the title, one of the best nights of my life.
Boxed a little when I was a schoolboy, but birds and booze put a halt to that.

None whatsoever. However, I was in the same class at school (All Souls) as Steven Bendall in Coventry. He was always winning fights even when we were at junior school. As far as I remember his brothers Darren and Stuart boxed too, but Steven was obviously the very talented one. I now I live in Newport, South Wales and see Paul Samuels every day as his kids are at the same school as mine. Although we say hello every day, I haven't plucked up the courage to speak to him properly. His fight with Wayne Alexander was the first I paid to see when I was at Uni in London. If I do speak to him i'll probably keep quiet that I was cheering for Alexander!
:P
Re: All posters on this forum and there links to boxing?
Speak to him mate - he would love the fact you know who he is and love it even more that you've seen him fight. Although I definatley wouldn't mention the alexander thing.

I'm just a massive fan of boxing, especially british boxing. I have only recently signed up to this forum but i think it's class. The fact you get pro's and trainers posting gives you a real insight into the industry.
I just hope idiots slating them doesn't drive them away and they keep posting.

This is one of the reasons why boxing needs to be on terrestrial telly - I understand that the 'top' stars need to look elsewhere but there should be something. There's no substitute for it in terms of getting people on board.Britannian Stallion wrote:In the summer of 2000, when I was 16, the BBC had 5 consecutive weekends, with each one showing one of the Rocky films. A parallel - remember the buzz in 2005 when we won the Ashes? All because it was on C4 and everyone was loving it. Then the idiots in charge took Murdoch's shilling and loads of people are immediately disenfranchised again.
Re: All posters on this forum and there links to boxing?
Haha, I remember when the Rocky films were played that summer, exaclt whay got me into boxing at that exact same time. I knew absolutely nothing about the sport, and started scanning all of the sports pages of the newspapers, and remember Lennox Lewis v Frans Botha and Prince Naseem Hamed was coming up!Britannian Stallion wrote:In the summer of 2000, when I was 16, the BBC had 5 consecutive weekends, with each one showing one of the Rocky films. I'm just a fan although I train at a boxing gym twice a week and do some occasional sparring, 1st got into boxing in the build up to the Hagler v Sibson fight when I was a kid, just thought Hagler was such a menacing bloke with his shaven head, stare downs etc. I was hooked from then on.

I am a distant relation of Arturo Godoy (he was born in Iqique in Chile as was my grandad) and my cousin was an undefeated Spanish middleweight boxing champion both as an amateur and a pro. My old dad boxed for Lowe House but it is my mums side where the talent lies. (I take after my dad!
)
Re: All posters on this forum and there links to boxing?
My Dad got me into boxing and we used to watch the big fights together in the 80s: McGuigan-Pedroza, McAuley-Bassa, Sibson-Kaylor, Lloyd Honeyghan, Kirkland Laing, Hagler-Hearns etc etc are some of my earliest memories. My favourite all-time fighter was Thomas Hearns. My old man then started sponsoring Herol Graham through his business and we got to knock about with Herol a bit when he became European champion. I've got a picture of me wearing Herol's Lonsdale belt when I was 7 which is great for me to look back on.
I attended my first 'live' show on my 17th birthday and saw Johnny Nelson bang out Tom Collins in a round. I attended lots of shows after that and never missed a TV show. I then got together with a mate and approached Frank Maloney about supplying content for his old Boxing Icons website in 2002. Frank invited us down to the gym on the Old Kent Road but he wasn't there when we arrived. Eugene was though and showed us round, wasn't convinced we could help him out but asked us back to attend his show at the Elephant & Castle the following week. Peter McDonagh made his debut and Tony Booth stopped Scott Lansdowne in an upset.
Frank then asked me if I'd inerview his boxers and supply content for Boxing Icons. The first boxer I interviewed was Tony Oakey and then it was Kevin Lear just prior to him fighting Michael Gomez. I had no real experience, but I enjoyed writing and grew in confidence as I stumbled along in the early days. I then 'ghosted' a couple of Maloney's columns. one of which being his prediction for Lewis-Tyson.
From there I started dabbling in a bit of reporting as a hobby and Clive Bernath at SecondsOut gave me a break in 2003. At that point the Sheffield scene was thriving and I got to attend a lot of BBC televised shows in Sheffield involving Clinton Woods-Glen Johnson, Carl Thompson-Rothmann, Mark Hobson - Rob Norton etc and witnessed David Haye's early developments. It was there where I gained a decent insight into what happens behind-the-scenes and my interest developed from there, which most of you are aware of.

Re: All posters on this forum and there links to boxing?
I was born and grew up behind the boxing shed that produced Colin Jones and Floyd Havard trained there for a bit - both under trainer Gareth Bevan who run the club for over 40 years.
However when Jones was at his peak and training in the shed and fighting the likes of Kirkland Lang and Milton McCory and Don Curry -
I was very young - like 1 or 2 or 3 years old - so I dont really remeber any of that although I am aware of the history of the club, etc. and always had the club in the background with amateur boxers training there when I would be in my back garden during the night - always would hear the fighters training over the club - and I trained over there for a stint whenh I was in my teens-so its always been in the background.
I have faint memorys of watching Hearns and Duran, etc in the 1980's.
But my own personal interest in the sport really began when I just fell into boxing - watching the likes of Benn and Eubank and Watson and James Toney and Michael Nunn and Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in the early 1990's.

Aye, I remember it well mate. I was watching through my fingers, pleading with Richie Davies to stop it.jamesmcdonnell wrote:

Then, timberrrrrrrrr!
I asked Richie when he got back to his seat just in front of me how close he was to stopping it. He put his finger and thumb a hair's width apart and said 'That close!'
Richie still says this is his favourite fight (of those he's reffed).

Did some writing for 18 months or so for the BBN now defunct, which I enjoyed but the job and family took over so hung my writing cap up.
Enjoyed meeting the fighters and seeing a bit of what goes on under the radar.
Fortunate enough to have made a couple of real good mates thru boxing you knwo who you are
, whom I dont see as much as i would like as logistics dont allow....
