Darren Sutherland one year anniversary

Post by goldbird »

One year to the day that Sutherland died.

I remember the shock when I heard. I had seen Sutherland many times as I live in Dublin. Even saw him on some nights out as we went to the same places. He would always nod at me and me at him, just to say hello. We never really talked but saw each other around a lot. I followed his career and amateur career too, wishing him well. Absolute shock to hear he died. I woke up the next day with a bruise on my forehead from a bad nights sleep. Strangely enough I have another one today from a bad nights sleep last night (I sleep with my face down).. one year to the day.

A tragic waste of life but he achieved a lot in his time and will be fondly remembered.

I was massively impressed by Darren's pro fights that I saw. I didn't hear anything about it, then I stumbled over his name in the paper thinking I had found a story or an interview with him. I was so shocked to see it was an obituary it made me dizzy. May he rest in peace, he should be still with us today. Cocky novices like DeGale make me feel sick, thinking about how little confidence Darren must have had compared to his talent.

I'm all in favour of a Sutherland remembrance, but how DeGale makes you feel sick as a reaction to that is simply beyond me.

I have lost touch with the amateur game. Headguards sicken me, and computer-scoring too, but one of the older American boys was ringside at the world amateur championships when they were held in Chicago and posted that, of all the fighters there, Sutherland had the style best suited to the pros, which struck a real chord. I began to take an interest in Darren, particularly when he began posting on here and particularly because he was a black Dubliner, like Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy.
There is no doubt that Darren was a special talent.

Just seen this thread - I hope Darren is now at peace.

I also thought of little Frank Maloney as he found Darren.
