How would Manny Pacquiao do against....

Post by theory »

....some of these all time greats?

vs. JCC @ 140 lb?
vs. Duran @ 135 lb?
vs. Arguello @ 135 lb?
vs. Kid Gavilan @ 147 lb?
vs Sal Sanchez @ 130?

Please add your own if you wish. Tell me what you think!

If I can adjust weights accordingly and imagine them all on same day weigh in (or just so the rules are the same).

Chavez at 135

Pac is quicker. Chavez puts them together a little better. This is a phone booth style fight (apologies to anyone under 20 who doesn’t remember them).

I couldn’t split these two.

Duran at 135

Duran just has more to his game. He can brawl with Pac or he can counter punch him like he did to DeJesus. Duran just has more ways to win and I think he would take it.

Arguello at 135

My gut feeling is that Pac would be better at the weight. Arguello would like Pac’s style though. Alexis would be able to unload those text book punches.

Pac would start quicker and Arguello would unload those text book punches as the fight went on. After the first 2 rounds I can imagine it being level pegging but Pac taking the first 2 might be key to victory

Gavilan at 147

Sort of like a fight with Mayweather. Gavilan naturally bigger and with both men being great I just think it would be too much for Pac to overcome.

Sanchez at 130…

If it’s the same Salvador from 126 and the fight is over 15 rounds then he beats Pac. Sanchez eventually worked out all of his opponents and I think he was better than the guys who gave Pac close fights (MAB, Marquez, etc…)

Barrera never gave Pacquiao a close fight. Do you mean Morales?

vs. JCC @ 140 lb?
I pick Pac by a considerable margin. Pac is just too quick for Chavez plus great stamina.

vs. Duran @ 135 lb?
I pick Duran based on his better defense.

vs. Arguello @ 135 lb?
I pick Arguello to win a very competitive fight. Pac will have his moments but Arguello’s power will be the difference.

vs. Kid Gavilan @ 147 lb?
I don’t see Pac winning this fight at all.

vs Sal Sanchez @ 130?
Sanchez was a hell of counter puncher and I don’t think Pac do good against great counter punchers like Chavez. I pick Sanchez by a clear decision.

Are you serious? I can see Pac beating Arguello and Gavilan, both by a slim margin. I don't know about JCC though. I'll admit he's one of my favs so I might be a little biased. Pacquiao is definately quicker, but Chavez hits harder AND he has a great chin.

Either way, they'll both be pissing blood by the end of the night. :OhYes:

No way in hell does Chavez hit harder than Pacquiao. Manny's in and out bursts are hell on Julio. Picturing the fight for me is almost like visualizing Frankie Randall, only faster and more powerful. Like Randall on steroids, that's bad news for Julio imo.

I would love to hear your “theory” on how Pac would defeat Gavilan. Gavilan had plenty of skills with an iron chin to boot.

Arguello’s skills were slightly better than Morales with more power. Prime Morales beats Pac most of the time in my opinion. Prime Arguello beats Pac more often than not.

As for Chavez hitting harder than Pac is simply not true. How many times did Chavez KO an opponent with one single shot? Could Chavez have KO Hatton the way that Pac did? I think Chavez would have definitely defeated Hatton but not by a dramatic KO like Pac did.

Hatton had no chin by that point, so Chavez very well could've just like he wrecked the solid-chinned Roger Mayweather in their first fight.

Besides, this is a loaded question anyway, Chavez wasn't a weight drainer, Pacquiao was so if you have them fighting at 140 with a same-day weigh-in you basically are comparing the Chavez of 135-140 and the Pacquiao of 126-130

"I disagree" See? I can be cute and witty too. Pac is a speed demon. I said he would defeat Gavilan by a slim margin, remember? He's also heavier handed then the Cuban Kid. Probably a SD, but it could of gone either way.

vs. JCC @ 140 lb?-Haven't see enought of Manny at 140lb and stopping Hatton which i felt he would do with ease didn't show me much. Chavez IMO is the greatest 140lber of all time. I can't see anyone beating him at this weight i see Chavez body work and inside fighting being too much for Manny.
vs. Duran @ 135 lb?-Duran all day long i love Manny but on one beats Duran at 135lb.
vs. Arguello @ 135 lb?-I like Arguello but he might be outgunned in this one. I could see Arguello takeing Manny out with one of his lazer like right hands but if i had to pick i woudl say Manny by decision in a FOTY.
vs. Kid Gavilan @ 147 lb?-Gavilan chin would allow him to absorb Manny's best shots while takeing a decision.
vs Sal Sanchez @ 130?-Sanchez wasa thing of beauty whne he got going I could see two scenarios here. Sanchez outboxing Manny to take a well deserved decision win or Manny outworking Sal to take his own decision win.

nice take overall, Ezz.

Sanchez' counterpunching and trap-setting gives Pac fits, stylewise, IMO

Agree re Gavilan, i think.

I think Arguello would have problems with Pac's angles and footwork, Alexis being rather flatfooted. I think over 12 pac takes this but would certainly not rule out a late stoppage win for Alexis over 15.

assuming Pac's gameplan is to box and move and not get involved, i think mostly this match works in his favour stylistically. also i think arguello *slightly* better against orthodox fighters where his jab would be more effective, than against lefties (although he got a good thing going on with lead right hands to Boza edwards' body, Boza was a pretty much static target and this would be much harder for Aa to pull of against Pac). but of course none of us could discount Arguello either flooring pac heavily with either hand, or bending him in two with a bodyshot.
stylistically the above fight ^^ is the most fascinating of them all to try and imagine, IMO

Duran i just think does nearly everything Pac does, but better or more of it, or did it against better fighters.

JCC at 135, again assuming a smart approach to the fight by Pac, i think this favours Pac. although, as a caveat, i am pretty sure Pac's draining to 135 would mean JCC's punch output would be more consistent throughout the fight, but i would fancy Pac's quicker hands and feet to squeeze home in a 7-5 type win.

Chavez wouldn't get within a mile of beating Locche. No way does Chavez turn the trick against him. He'd be no better than even money with Benitez, & I think Whitaker'd have always had his number.

Chavez would loose by knock out. Pacquiao is to fast and to heavy handed for that overrated bozo Chavez. Duran would of had a very close fight if they met in their respective primes. Arguello was demolished by Pryor who like Pacquiao had great stamina, power and speed so hands down Pacquiao by knockout

Wait a second....so Pacquiao beats Chavez by KO but if Chavez fought Duran it would be a close fight?

Hold on let me get all the laughter out.

Not finished.
Almost done.
