The fights Calzaghe missed

Post by oliverfennell »

Branching from the other Calzaghe thread, and I know we've done debates about his record a thousand time, so this is more to discuss what would have happened if he'd fought certain rivals. Your thoughts on Calzaghe vs...

Steve Collins
Sven Ottke
Markus Beyer
Glen Johnson
Clinton Woods
Chad Dawson
Kelly Pavlik
Jermain Taylor
Carl Froch

Others?

I think he would have beaten all of the above, most on points, stopping Beyer and possibly Pavlik and Taylor. The closest fights would have been against Ottke and Johnson, and perhaps Taylor would keep it close on the cards even if he was ultimately stopped. The others would have been beaten quite comfortably - and yes, I include Collins in that.

Taylor would've been very dangerous for him too though, especially considering how Hopkins and Jones dropped him. Taylor's hands were just as fast and he had more firepower.

Johnson would've given Calzaghe a lot of problems just in terms of strength and ruggedness, but I think Joe would've done just enough to get it done fairly close.

Dawson too could've given Calzaghe a run for his money because he has fast hands as well on top of underrated power, but I'd favor Calzaghe to win a close fight based on his workrate at the time they would've fought.

Yess! What could have been. I would think that a match-up with Glen Johnson would have been wildly entertaining with Calzaghe barely edging him. I think a closer-to-prime Hopkins would have won a clear cut decision over him, feel the same way about Jones Jr.. Could`ve maybe stopped him too. I think he(Calzaghe) outboxes Pavlik,Beyer,Ottke,Woods, and has trouble, but ultimatley wins against Froch. As DW stated I believe Taylor would have posed alot of problems for Calzaghe and I think would have won a points decision over Calzaghe. Taylor was naturally very talented and I don`t see Calzaghe`s speed or power posing problems that Taylor couldn`t overcome. A Dawson fight is a tough call. Could we add Antonio "The Magic Man"Tarver into the mix? That would be a helluva match in my opinion. I really liked Tarver`s style,he was an all around very solid fighter.

Sven like Joe has never been defeated. Had they met, I'm sure both simply would have vanished into thin air.
