Best way to recover from a knockdown

Post by Old bones Ian »

Just been watching some old Larry Holmes fights, and noticed when he was knocked down he used to rise and walk along the edge of the ring, holding onto the top rope, letting the ref follow him round during the count.

always seemed to work for him , till Tyson managed to KO him.

I'm guessing this was a way of putting life back into the legs and trying to get his head straight, would this be a better way then taking a knee and jumping up at 8 or 9?

I only ever got knocked down once properly and I did the 8 count thing but when I first tried at 7 I was suprised how unstable my legs were- if I'd have been more stunned then I'd imagine I'd have gone back over- fight finished! Ps steve Murray was one he'll of a hitter thank fornicate the bell rang

A bit of an exhale, lying on the sofa with the remote.

I'd say you have more chance of fighting on if you get up quickly, but as for how well you recover I wouldn't know. I've noticed that people who get knocked down alot like to get straight back up as soon as they can and take the 8 standing. It seems like fighters who aren't used to being knocked down get up on 8 more often. Maybe thats something to go by.

If your knocked down you take as much time as possible to recover - hence the 8 count most boxers take.

If you take less than the 8 count your either stupid or very green.

slightly off topic... but the Cubans prepare for the after effect of a KD by spinning around for a few minutes n then commensing sparring

Archie Moore always claimed that a rather helpful referee yanked on Rocky Marciano's arms when wiping his gloves after a heavy first-round knockdown, and brought the Rock back to his senses.

A trainer in one of the gyms where I'm from does that aswell, the only difference is he blindfolds the boxer and spins them around.

Has said before take the count till 7 then rise ,, when ref says box, run like fack hide behind him , and start jostling him to get out the way ,
If you practice it , you might even get good enough at it to make it look like its the refs fault

I don't think the speed of getting up affects the ref's decision, more how compus mentus you appear to be. For example, staying on one knee until 8 or even 9 and calmly watching the ref's count is more likely to earn you a pass than leaping up at 2 or 3 and then wobbling.

Fall out of the ring as lightly as you can and use the 20 seconds to recover ;;-)

Under BBBofC rules I have read that if you are not up and facing the ref (or ready to box....going from memory here) AT the count of 8, then the fight should be stopped. Which does beg the question what's the point of a 10 count?

Walking about with your back to the ref is a good way of buying time. As someone said earlier, it can bodge up the refs count and buy those extra few vital seconds.

Or the alternative is to hope it's not a British referee who is feeling over protective on that day, because inconcistency from one ref to another is very common.
