Bruised Ribs

Post by Manchester Massive »

2 questions for you. 1) what is the best treatment for sore ribs? (Yes I know keep my elbows tucked in) 2) Am I right in thinking you can't really do any conditioning for your ribs?

There are different schools of thought on this, pal. Many would argue there's not a lot you can do; I disagree.

Buy some Methyl-Salicylate and rub a good amount on your ribs. Then get well warmed-up before letting a training partner set about your ribs with either gloves or a medicine ball (or baseball bat if you are really brave :DD ). Don't go stupid or too hard at first. Do three to four rounds.

Warm down and then apply more Methyl-Salicylate and massage your ribs really well.

Then smash an ice pack onto the ribs for 20-30 minutes and then massage again. Ice 2-3 times per day.

Repeat the above every other day.

Additionally: Take a good calcium and Viatmin D supplement and eat plenty of fish.

This activity works on the SAID (Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands) Principle. The two adaptations that occur are localised, superficial numbing of the nerves; and over time you ribs become denser.

Gradually increase the intensity of the impact on your ribs and be careful, you could obviously get seriously injured if you go at it too hard too quickly.
After reading that MM I've decided I'd just prefer to take the 'bruised ribs' option - less painful and less demanding

what do you do if you've got a rib that moves around for instance when you bend over and lift something up?
