Missed fights of Danny Green's career
What fights are they that Danny Green has turned down, or fights that just didn't go ahead after being scheduled or talked about?
I know of these:
- He was offered to fight Sven Ottke which he turned down, going on to beat Jason DeLisle then the first Beyer fight.
- He was supposed to fight Scott Pemberton in 2005, but pulled out with a back injury.
- He was scheduled to fight Antonio Tarver for a minor LHW belt in December of 2007 before being screwed around by Tarver's team.
- He was scheduled to fight Hugo Hernan Garay in April 2008 before his mini-retirement.
- There were talks of a fight with Bernard Hopkins after his knockout of Roy Jones Junior.
Do you know of any more?
How do you think these fight would have turned out had they gone ahead?
For me:
Ottke beats an inexperienced Green by controversial decision or disqualification.
Green knocks Pemberton out early (both big SMW punchers, but Green has the far better chin)
Green knocks Tarver out in the middle rounds (close call, pretty close to 50:50 on who wins)
Green knocks Garay out around round 4-5.
If at cruiserweight, Green knocks old Hopkins out in the mid to late rounds.

Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
green v calzaghe (rather than beyer) could have been a sensational fight.
Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
I think Green beats Pemberton, Garay, and Hopkins. Hopkins would have defeated Green in their respective primes, and by quite a large margin in my opinion. However, I think Hopkins had started to slow down by this point (and I expect him to lose to Pascal), and Green would outwork him for a points win. I really don't see a KO for Green. Hopkins still has very good defence and knows every trick in the book. Pemberton was never in Green's league and would be battered. Garay is a decent fighter but I think Green is sharper, more powerful, and just as skilled. I like Green by KO around the eighth. It would be a very good fight.
I think Tarver and Ottke would have beaten Green. Tarver has better boxing ability and still had something left in 2007. He always had a decent chin, and I don't see Green stopping him. I think Tarver edges it, but it's one of those fights that is hard to call. Ottke would do just enough to beat Green on points, but people would complain about the decision, even if it was a close fight that could have gone either way (like most of the so-called Ottke 'robberies').
As for Calzaghe, I think he would have defeated Green by a wide margin, even if he had to get off the canvas at some point. The gap in talent and skill was pretty big.

Wasn't Green-Kessler a possibility at one point? I'm sure I've heard their names discussed for a SMW fight at some point.
Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
the winner of mundine v green was supposed to fight kessler, green didnt get the fight cause he lost and mundine wanted nothing to do with a kessler rematch thats the way i remember it

Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
Either way I think Kessler widely outpoints Green at Super Middleweight.
Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
Green knocks out Hopkins?
I'm assuming you mean Anthony.

Green has offered to fight Hopkins. Hopkins passed. Hopkins fought RJJ instead. Outpointed him after Green cleaned Roy up in half a round.deadpan wrote:Green knocks out Hopkins?

Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
Yep, this was a tough call for me. Prime-for-prime, Hopkins widely outpoints Green, but at 185lb I think Danny Green knocks at 45 year-old Bernard Hopkins out. I reckon TKO around round 7. Another possibility is that Green beats him on activity, but regardless, even an old Hopkins would make Green look clumsy at times.Brute wrote:Green has offered to fight Hopkins. Hopkins passed. Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
I thought Hopkins would not fight because he said he wouldn't travel to Europe to fight.
Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
yes he is on his way here, he is just a little lost atm.
i feel at this stage hopkins would be ko'd by green. green would be too hungry for the old fox.

kessler wins by ponits at super middle green wins by brutal ko and light heavy ?>
Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
of all of the fights mentioned I think the Garay fight would have been one of the toughest.
I would be confident in Green v Ottke, Pembo, Hopkins and Tarver. Garay had a real hard head and could bomb.
I think once Danny pulls the pin on his career we will have a few more fights to add, unless he is going to ramp it up abit in the next year or two....Dawson, Huck, Cunningham etc etc

Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
Didn't Garay get beaten by some numpty not long after the Green fight fell through?
Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
My understanding was Garay had retired after the green fight then came back...had many issues in and out of the ring to deal with when the Green fight fell through, which financially was going to be decent for him. Garay openly admitted he hated boxing and never wanted tobe a boxer. It was purely for the money and support his family. Fighters like that can either be world beaters (if they have talent and are in the right frame of mind, which Garay was on a couple occasions against Erdei) or be lucky to survive in round 1 of a local club show...
I thinkyou are right though, it wasnt a great fighter who beat him, but I just felt going into the Green fight, and with his style he could have troubled Green more than some of those bigger names mentioned previously.

Nobody ever called him a genius.
Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
Garay has a KO percentage of less than 50%, Green has a KO percentage of over 80%.amwsnw wrote:of all of the fights mentioned I think the Garay fight would have been one of the toughest.

Let us nor forget that Otis Griffin had only lost one prelim fight before Green beat him and he was expected to do great things.
Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
Garay is now fighting at Cruiser, and from my understanding( i actually seen it with my own eyes) he was robbed in that blowout first round KO loss to Henry.
Re: Missed fights of Danny Green's career
IMO, those fights mentioned would have all been good but here's my take.
Pemberton would have got smashed, this is a no brainer.
Ottke tried to get Green, while he was Green
D who knows....Prime for Prime at a neutral venue, I pick Green to smash him to Bits, the problem with fighters who are feather fisted entering the ring with a Bulldog who have ability, is they can't keep em off for too long, with no special help from the ref/judges there would be no hole big enough for Sven to hide in. Stles make fights and for Sven he'd have nightmares for years to come.
Tarver would have been a good fight for Green 3 years a go, In all honesty, Green might have bit of more than he can chew, but i can't be sure of that either.
When this fight was being talked about, I pick Green by wide points or he hands Hopkins his first loss by KO, he's 46, Pavlik is over rated, which for some who doubt what i'm saying will be proven over time...and time again. Hopkins hasn't fought a guy like Green, and at the tender age of 46 couldn't handle the ferocity, he'd cage up and whing that he got robbed. Prime for prime, probably a different story, but ol Bernard keeps fooling the Public and the idiots who do the rankings here at Boxrec into thinking he's still relevant. Pascal will make Bernard feel all of his 46 years come the end of the year.
The fight i always wanted to see, was Green vs kessler, this is the fight that would have made Green undeniably 1 of the hardest bastards going around.
