Who are some boxers that were never the same after they fought a certain opponent?

I'll go first: Meldrick Taylor was never the same after he fought Chavez. Chavez deeply fractured his face and made him piss pure blood after the fight. An olympic gold medalist, Taylor's career never seemed to recover after he lost the controversial fight versus Chavez.

Meldrick Taylor was really ruined by Norris IMO. He should never have been fioghting at that weight.

Not a popular thing to say but Chavez was never quite the same after Taylor either. It gets overlooked because of Taylor's condition but Chavez took a lot of punishment himself and was not in charge of that fight.

He'd been in close contests before but always seemed in control - not against Taylor.

Roy was fine after the Ruiz fight. He may have been a little weight-drained against Tarver the first fight but he still pulled out a tough win against a top p4p guy. The fight that ended RJJ was Tarver II. He got a taste of what it felt like to be hurt for the first time in his career and he never fought the same again. He was gun shy against Johnson and got KTFO. He was afraid to pull the trigger against Tarver in III. He had Calzaghe hurt early and was obviously scared to try to finish him.

Roy Jones did not like to be punched and once he figured out what it felt like for the first time his career was over.

I cant agree with that analysis, Roy Jones was all of a sudden shot and it had nothing to do with Tarvers punches. The man was like a zombie devoid of strength and stamina in the tarver fight. Thats what shedding all that weight and not being able to use BALCO products did to the man.

I wouldn't class that as being in the spirit of the thread, though. That was an incidental drop-off, not related to actually fighting Tyson.

Never the less, we both have the same conclusion and that is that Roy being shot had nothing to do with Ruiz which is what naming that fight would infer. I think the point of the topic is a guy getting beaten so badly that he never is the same.

Also, if RJJ was "shot" he sure pulled of a miracle beating Tarver in their first fight. He won the last few rounds in that fight that he HAD to have to win. Zombies with no stamina don't pull out wins in the championship rounds.

When Roy woke up after Tarver KO'd him in II, he was never the same. From that day after he was never willing to take risks the way he used to with his speed and ability to dodge punches. He was afraid of getting punched after that. Watch where his hands were his entire career up until the 2nd round against Tarver. Then watch were his hands are from Johnson going forward. He was simply a different fighter.

It can leave you in a hurry, especially when compounded by health issues.

Frazier was limited in physical attributes compared to Ali and Foreman. You know that.

He needed that fine edge and maximum commitment to the task to stay on top.

Both of those attributes were gone after the FOTC.

As proven by his coming in over weight and over confident in Jamaica.

Sounds good to me, though you omitted the wrestling moves.

Seriously, betting lines don't mean much. As I recall. Liston was 7-1 in the first Ali bout, Tyson off the charts against Douglas, etc.

Frazier was clearly less of a fighter in '73 vs the FOTC, that I know for absolute certainty.

Agree that we shouldn't go over this anymore.

Thad Spencer is an excellent choice for this thread.

He really went down after Quarry beat him up. Hard to figure as Thad was actually the favorite to win the WBA tournament after he beat Terrell in the opening round of the tournament.
