Stupid and pointless bit of info here, but the night of Holyfield vs Bowe II was the night I got together with my missus. The night involved a deaf albino cat, a shooting, tear gas, ecstasy, and fumbled boobage. 8)
Very fond memories of that night tho', and it's the fight I've probably watched more than any other.

My family have always been into boxing, so have always watched it from a young age.My brother Rocky Dean turned Pro and joined the peacock gym. Thats when I started to take a real intrest in Boxing. Going to the peacock with my brother and seeing all the Pros training and sparring really got me intrested and i started to follow the peacock boxers like John Humphrey, Daniel James, Eric Teymour, Elvis Mihailenko, Ovill McKenzie and John Mackay. My obsession started.I go to as many shows as i can and watch most of the tv shows.

Always loved the sport and always will - lucky enough to work in the sport for the last 10 years - many people like to take the p*ss which is fair enough - saying all I do is make the tea - well I must make a f*cking good brew because its got me to Vegas twice - worked on 2 shows there - a very lucky man - met many many good people in the sport and also noticed some right crooks as well.
Dont like "grasses" - think that b*tch who grassed up Mr Hatton is a right **** - many of us have seen things that aint right in boxing - many of us could tell many a yarn but it doesnt mean we grass on people and publically humilate them.

Great little insight in to how Merseygloves started, I joined mersey gloves when it first started (under the name scouseandproud), but thought it had finished have`nt been able to get on for a while, will try again, also any chance getting Merseygloves t-shirts.Chris W 1982 wrote:My first encounter with boxing was the first Mike Tyson-Frank Bruno fight. That was viewed with my excited father, who insisted beforehand that Bruno was out of his depth and would be stopped inside a round.
Following that, my interest only seemed to focus on the big fights that were occuring in Britain in the early to mid nineties. As a gullible youngster, any sporting promo that featured a thumping soundtrack ensured it was must-view TV for me and as a result I witnessed many great spectacles. Lennox Lewis-Razor Ruddock was special and so was the tragic Nigel Benn-Gerald McClellan fight. The rise of Prince Naseem Hamed was also popular amongst the playground on Monday morning too.
It was attending school with Tony Bellew that turned me from casual fan into hardcore addict though as his bedroom full of boxing beauties gave me a thrill that still remains to this day. Bellew, as he still is now, was a massive student of the game and his book, magazine and video collection was something to behold. He introduced me to the wonderful sights of Erik Morales, Roy Jones Jnr, Felix Trinidad, Ricardo Lopez, James Toney and Sugar Shane Mosley. He wasn't the most generous when it came to lending his collectables but every so often he'd give you the opportunity to borrow a number of tapes or the odd magazine. I made it my personal mission to compile a video library larger than his (something I achieved) and began buying Boxing Monthly/Boxing News religiously.
As the passion grew, so did Bellew and it wasn't long before I was following my friend around Britain as he went on to capture three ABA titles as well as a Four-Nations crown as well. His exploits took me to Portsmouth, Bradford, Leeds, Preston, Nantwich, London and a number of venues in Liverpool that I origiginally thought only served as nightclubs. The lack of attendance at amateur shows was an issue that shocked me at first but after reading about the sport on a regular basis, I came to realise that this was the norm.
I came to cover the sport in 2009 after years of saying "I'd eventually do it." Throughout school and college, I was informed by teachers and tutors that I had a good style of writing but I never fully believed in myself to give it a go. Along with a friend, I set up Merseygloves last September as I believed Liverpool was a hotbed for talent and I'd always had a caring feeling towards our city's boxers. Lots of people advised me to interview Bellew first but I thought that would be too easy and instead turned my focus towards Tony Dodson. Paul Smith was about to challenge Tony Quigley for the latter's British title and I thought Dodson would have an excellent opinion on it due to his background with both fighters. I obtained his number through a mutual friend and sent him a weak text message asking him if he could donate some of his time. He rang me back immediately and two days later I was sitting in his front room talking boxing for nearly three hours. The interview was well recieved by the public and I've been penning articles ever since. I covered Ryan Farrag's ABA semi triumph over Luke Campbell for the Liverpool Echo and the piece serves as a centrepiece on the Everton Red Triangle Gym wall. Every time I walk in there and see it, it gives me a massive sense of purpose and pride.
Although I'm a global boxing fan, nothing gives me a greater pleasure than watching someone from Merseyside do well for themselves through boxing as members of Liverpool's boxing community have been so supportive in helping me do something which I absolutely adore. Our website is now a magazine which has recieved marvellous feedback and I sincerely hope we can continue producing it for a long period to come.
There are too many people for me to thank in getting Merseygloves this far but I'd like to give a massive thank you to the following people. Tony Bellew and Dave Tonks for being good friends and for opening so many doors for me. Alan Lynch and Damian Ridpath, who have given me unlimited access to all that's going on within amateur boxing on Merseyside. Ian McNeilly, Danny Flexen, Glyn Leach, Terry Dooley and Nick Peet for your creative advice and for giving me a platform to display my work, and my Merseygloves partner Stephen Speed who I have enjoyed countless road trips with. Many, many more to come brother.

I've been a fan since I was 10 when I saw Rocky 2. McGuigan - Cabrera was the first fight I sat down to watch live and I got hooked watching Honeyghan, Tyson, Hagler, Hearns & Leonard. I've been very fortunate in that I now work in boxing for the ABAE and have had the opportunity to meet a number of top boxers past and present, and some great people at all levels of the sport. As a fan first I sometimes have to pinch myself

A lot of people laughed when you got twatted on the BBC by Paul King but I was annoyed because this is an attitude that is carried along by a lot of boxing people for the fans and it is wrapped around contempt. There are lots of nice boxing people and there are lots of complete and utter arseholes - I tend to find the bigger the no mark the bigger the arsehole and the more up their arse they are. One of the nicest guys I have met was in fact Ryan Rhodes who was so different to how I thought he would be. So I try not to judge a book by a cover but I tend to find that if I can watch my boxing, pay my money and then go home or switch off - then I have a good relationship with the sport.

With regards to your "bigger the arsehole" comment - heres some blunt and to the point honesty for you - I used to ring up a certain person within the sport frustrated to f*ck and was told whatever I wanted out of the sport to get whatever it was then get the f*ck out of it - as boxing was no sport to desire a full time job in - unless of course you were the sort who was prepared to sell your own granny. I completely agree that with regards to my standing within the sport - yep I was and definitely still am a complete and utter "no mark" so using that analogy I am proud of what I got up to - to a point of course.
I have got completely used to the sort of comments "Met so and so and he has given you a right slagging off" - my attitude to that was "so f*cking what" - its what someone says to my face that I will have to deal with. Contradicting that I found it utterly flabbergasting how people would say one thing about no longer dealing with certain people in the sport and only a few months later being the best of buddies - I only found out that very point this week!!!
Finally - in whatever walk of life - you have to get used to dealing with arsholes - you dont have to like them - just find a way of dealing with them to get on in this weird world.

I would say my main influence was Chris Eubank I remember watching him with my mum and dad and thinking this guy is crazy. Then Naz caught my eye and it was a snowball effect from then on really. I lived on the same estate as Andy Morris as a teenager so me and my mates have followed his career closesly. All my time went into trying to become a footballer I just wish I decided to try out boxing as I'm convinced I could of been a good boxer.

I'm just an enthusiast, drawn the the game like a moth to the light or a fly to sh*t.....I sometimes go away for a while but never for long!
The fighters that have stood out for me are Ali, Leonard (altho I ain't seen anywhere near enough of him!! Likewise Duran)....I also love Hearns style. After that you're talking Eubank, Calzaghe with a few sandwiched in between. I'm a bit too young but having read "The Biggest Fight" I think I'd have been a big fan of the People's Champion Michael Watson too.
What I will admit to, and privelege it was (stomach muscles aside for a minute)....I went down the gym last week after nigh on 4 months out with ankle ligament injury, just to tick over and generally mind my own fcking business, an I got a 1-2-1 clinic, and bit of a beasting, by Mongolian hero and all round nice lad Choi Tsvenpureev. He's still in terrific shape and looking for a big fight.

I used to do a couple various martial arts and Boxing, then didnt a bit of MMA (all never above hobby level) - although i could have been on Danny Dyers deadliest men once but couldn't get the time off work.
When i say on the program what i should say is in the backgroud watching a sparring session at the gym i trained at for a bit between Barrington Patterson and one of the top british cage fighters who's name escapes me. However my mates got on telly and i didnt - missed my claim to fame there lol, although if you watch the Haye v Ruiz fight in HD you can see me in the far distance in a crow shot
.
Got interested in boxing from my dad being a bruno fan and my mum being a eubank fan (not that she's a boxing fan, she just liked eubank) - once you watch the build up and a fight like Eubank v Benn at the age of 10 or somert you will always be a boxing fan imo.

Got into boxing at a young age when i used to stay at my grandads & friday fight night would be on. Begged my mum to let me train but she never caved in so was always just a keen fan. I remember one night staying up to watch Lewis in the states only for the tv not to work and i had to watch the fuzzy screen but at least i got the commentary.
Started going to live events when i finished uni and have been up and down the country watching anyone and everyone. Finally got myself down the gym a couple of years ago but the hands couldn't really hack it due to many broken bones from playing cricket

Re: All posters on this forum and there links to boxing?
Going to the Kings Hall as a kid to watch McGuigan and Hugh Russell with my da and uncle was my first taste of the sweet science. I instantly loved it. In those days, used to get me in free, I think if you bought a couple of adult tickets you could bring a kid in for free. We used to stand on the balcony corner at the entrance end and right beside the upstairs bar. I had my binoculars, packet of Tayto crisps and a coke and took in the smokey, beer fuelled atmosphere, and the chants of 'Here we go, here we go, here we go'. I think I appreciated the live atmosphere every bit as much as the boxing.
I remember watched the replays on BBC on a Saturday morning, as many of McGuigan's fights were not shown live by BBC Northern Ireland, but available on delay the next morning. I regularly followed boxing from that time. My favourite boxers were Sugar Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, Dave Boy McAuley and Neil Sinclair.
When I was a teenager I joined an amateur boxing club towards the end of the season. I did the training, sparring and loved it. But I never had a fight, I went on the last trip of the season and couldnt get matched-up. Then I started weight lifting, due to an obsession with body building - and that lasted for a couple of years until my latter teens.
Since then, I fell in and out of boxing as a casual fan - and only really followed Benn, Eubank, Collins fights, then the Naseem fights, then Hatton.
I really got hooked back on boxing again when I started going to the Irish shows again, Duddy, Rogan etc.
Then I discovered the boxing websites and forums and this helped to fuel things further. I now prefer boxing over all other sports. In fact, in recent years I have actually lost interest in football and that used to be my first love.
I like to go onto the online databases at work and do a few searches and read the reports and articles from the old guys. I have been meaning to write a couple of articles on different themes from the literature reviews that I have completed - will do so soon.
I do a bit of writing for a couple of sites 8) - it is more of a hubby rather than anything else, plus writing is not a chore as it is a core activity of my day job.
I enjoy the whole fight week and it is a privilege to be in the company of the boxers. I do not particularly care about celebrities, like movie stars, musicians etc - they are all the same to me and many of them are pretentious muppets. For me the boxers are on a higher plain than any fabricated movie star or rock star and what they do with regards their dedication to training and the very nature of their brutal sport commands my total respect.

Re: All posters on this forum and there links to boxing?
Seems as though McGuigan got a lot of people into boxing..! I must download some of his fights.
Re: All posters on this forum and there links to boxing?
I'd never really 'followed' boxing, I remembered Hamed when I was young and thinking he was amazing. I also thought Steve Collins was awesome as my mum is Irish and always cheered for him. Being from Failsworth I remembered Anthony Farnell being a decent boxer but was too young to know what level he was at at the time.
I used to just watch the odd Friday fight night and the Pay-Per-Views but then got chatting to a bloke at my work about 2 years ago..Abdul Rashid who was a pro for 6 fights and is big mates with Andy Morris & Dave Barnes etc.
I was intrigued to hear from him about things I knew nothing about...how important it was to be a ticket seller etc and taking fights at late notice etc. I did a bit on the pads with him but was far from a natural!!!
I did go down to Bob Shannon's gym though one night with him, I watched Prince Aaron on the bags and remember thinking "god he hits hard", I then went home, came on here and checked his record and started to appreciate how hard boxers must punch!!!!
I remember thinking how strong Bob's forearms were for his age and doing a 3 minute round on the body bag with him, he just kept leaning on me but was telling me to still keep throwing, it got to the stage where I could hardly breathe...when I finally got my head up and took in some air I started to see stars! Wish I'd gone back the next week. I loved it though and from then on I've watched most Friday fight nights and PPV's and am on here every day reading about the sport.
Have to say by the way, Andy Morris v Crolla will be a great fight but think Morris will be too smooth even though Crolla is from round my way!

Got into Boxing at the age of 7. At the time boxers like Bruno,Benn and Eubank were household names and Prince Naseem was just strating his career(which i also followed). I boxed on and off for about 9 years from the age of 11 but never had the chance to get a bout because well.....iwas too lazy and thought that all the skills etc would all come to me at once(pretty impatient tbh). I started again when i was 21 and was looking for a bout as i was training about 5 times a week but didnt want to go down the amateur route and was looking for a bout in the white collar circuit which never came about. Im my own worst enemy really to be honest lol. Im 24 next month and im sure ill be going down the gym again to try and regain that so called enthusiasm of mine. Im more patient now and tend to listen to others more so i hope it works out next time as i love my Boxing and this time i wont prtend i know more then the coach and MAYBE i might have a decent crack in the sport. All in all though im a massive fan of the sport who would love to get involved competitevely and enjoys attending local amateur and pro shows.
Really good thread this and is a breath of fresh air from all the usual Hatton/Haye/Audley spin you get on boxing forums
