Jan. 30 - Vladimir Mironyuk L pts
USA vs. Soviet Union; Denver, Colorado.

Mch. 16 - Dennis Belair W pts
(Edmonton, Canada). (Salt Lake [Utah] Tribune 3-17-73:23).
Mch. 17 - Steve Clark W ko 1
(Utah State Prison). U. S. Rocky Mountain Region Golden Gloves light-heavyweight champion; Salt Lake City, Utah. (Salt Lake [Utah] Tribune 3-18-73:B-13).

Mch. 19 - Peter McIntyre W rsc 3
(Los Angeles, California)
Mch. 21 - Risle Beckerwith W
(Knoxville, Tennessee).
Mch. 21 - Robert Stewart W pts
(Holyoke, Massachusetts). Stewart “was mauled by Barker. He likes to fight inside, but couldn’t get anywhere near Barker, who held Stewart at bay with his long reach. Stewart took a terrible thrashing during the first round, and during the two times he did fight his way inside, he was warned by the referee for low punching. Stewart managed to get off a few good strikes in the second round, but Barker treated them like insect bites and hit back a lot more. Stewart finally cornered Barker in the final round for a series of head and body punches, but damage was negligible and Stewart eventually got the worst of everything, including the decision” (Lowell [Massachusetts] Sun 3-22-73:31).
Mch. 22 - Leon Spinks W pts
(St. Louis, Missouri). Spinks, “a human windmill who never stops swinging, forced the normally composed Barker into his style in their confrontation, but Barker adapted himself well to the strategy, and beat Spinks at his own game. Both fighters slugged it out from the opening bell to the final bell. Both administered a dreadful beating to each other, but Barker scored with more accuracy to nail down the decision” (Lowell [Massachusetts] Sun 3-23-73:18). Barker “outlined the strategy that earned him the clear decision over Spinks. ‘I’m a boxer - a real body puncher,’ began Barker. ‘I just outmaneuvered him. That’s my style. I slowed him down with the right hand to the body and left hooks to the head. This guy [Spinks] was a hard street fighter. A good man. A tough man. But I just did my own thing’” (Later edition of the same newspaper above:20).
Mch. 23 - Larry Martin W pts
(Kansas City, Missouri). U. S. National Golden Gloves light-heavyweight champion; Lowell, Massachusetts. “”Barker had little difficulty disposing of Martin. The classy Barker took command right away by splitting Martin’s lower lip with his second ppunch. Barker pummelled the game Martin with a barrage of straight lefts to the face, and at the start of the second round the crafty Barker switched to a left hook that proved equally effective. Martin tried to slug it out with Barker at the beginning of the third stanza, but a straight right stunned him. Barker landed 99 per cent of his blows thereafter, and it was incredible that Martin took the repeated punishment without falling” (Lowell [Massachusetts] Sun 3-24-73:5). “Most observers felt that Barker was the most impressive fighter in the tournament. He picked apart each of his opponents with the skill of a seasoned professional and not once in his five bouts here did he appear to be stung or hurt by a rival’s punch. The Salt Lake City representative said that Barker’s basic style was to outmaneuver his foe, and from his performance it would seem that Barker is an excellent pro prospect” (Lowell [Massachusetts] Sun 3-25-73:D-1).

Apr. 14 - Janusz Gortat L pts
USA vs. Poland; West Paterson, New Jersey.
Apr. 18 - Janusz Gortat W pts
USA vs. Poland; Chicago, Illinois.

May 9 - Ted Rolle W rsc 2
( ___________)
May 10 - Tommy Johnson W
(U. S. Army)
May 11 - Alex Bell, Jr. W pts
(Chicago)
May 12 - Leon Spinks W ko 1
(St. Louis, Missouri). U. S. National AAU light-heavyweight champion; Boston, Massachusetts. Barker “started throwing left and right combinations to the head of Spinks and then stunned Spinks with both hands in the flurry which ended the bout at 2:20 of the first round” (Lowell [Massachusetts] Sun 5-13-73:D-1). “Spinks, hurt in the body, took the full count standing in a corner, out on his feet” (Pacific Stars and Strips (Tokyo, Japan) 5-16-73:18; Boston [Massachusetts] Globe 5-13-73:81).

Aug. 9 - Guenther Peters W pts
