Toney v Skelton/Williams winner?

Post by jomothepure »

Sounds daft, but just brought it up on the current scene because I was bored. (Read the wiity and insightful post here: http://www.boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27529

I think I have actually talked myself into the winner of Skelton-Williams fighting Toney on the basis of:

A) Klitchko out of commission. Valuev "not ready." Byrd, well maybe a poss, but I would reckon it wouldn't be his choice (ie. Byrd's) And a fight with Galota or Brewster doesn't ring my matchmaking bell to be honest. And then I won't insult your intelligence by offering Tyson as a possible opponent.
B) Toney would want a fairly easy fight
C) Winner of Skelton/Williams would be ready about November say, a time I would say suited Toney.
D) All of alledgedly's talk about S/W winner getting a WBA shot. Sounded like he was chasing the dragon at the time (alledgedly) but maybe he's got a little deal on the quiet all ready?

All the above is just hypothetical ramblings, you understand.

No chance. Why on earth would King put him in with one of them given his history with Allegedly? And who in the US would pay to see it?

King has plenty of fighters he can offer the fight to, maybe Williamson or even Austin or Donald....

Too right Graham. I can see there is a chance my idea may not receive widespread acclaim. Having had a shower, a shave and a I have to say it does sound a little adventurous reading it over. Forgetting King and alledgedly was a grave miscalculation, I have to admit. I am still wondering WTF alledgedly was up to bringing up all that stuff about the winner getting a pop at the WBA.

Not as daft as it sounds, remember in the press conference it was allegedly stated that the winner of this will have a geniune (i.e. top 4) world title fight at the end of the year.

I cannot see it being Klitchsko, so it will have to be a Don King controlled fighter - so why not Toney?

As far as outcome is concerned, Toney would win with little problems I'm afraid - I would have give both (but especially Williams) a geniune chance at beating Ruiz, but not Toney.

If somehow Golota f's up this chance with Brewster then the Brit boys should focus on him now.

I reckon that was just bullshit at the press conference. Neither are highly rated by the WBA and after Williams non effort against Klitschko I really dont see how the fight sells if its him. And Skelton is a total unknown stateside.

Another consideration, I doubt Toney would want to fight either of them he'll be after big money fights with the other champions not a nothing match against either of those two.

If Skelton beats Williams, he will no longer be an unkown stateside - even if it doesn't make US TV there will be some mainstream exposure on established websites and I'm sure it will get mentioned in the US boxing press and on TV (like mentioning the results).

If Golota can get 3 titles shots in a row without a meaningful win in his ENTIRE career then why not Skelton or Williams.

Williams, like anyone who beats Tyson, has marquee value, and losing to Vitali doesn't really dimish that.

In order for Skelton to have profile, the fight between himself and Williams would have to be televised, I just don't see how else the American public are going to buy into the fight.

The big fight out there right now is Toney v Golota, but that won't happen for a while, not until Golota gets a title.

I think it's possible that if Williams wins he gets a shot at Toney, but I can't say I find it likely.

Sorry guys but I really dont see any way it can happen.

If King wants a low key defence for Toney he has plenty of his own heavyweights he can put in there as he has ALWAYS done in the past.

Why would he do otherwise?

Golota sells loads of tickets among Pole expats along the East Coast, that's why all his big fights have been in NY/NJ. They always usually cut away from the in-between rounds corner coverage to show the crowd with their chants and flags. Skelton or Williams wouldn't bring anything like that to the arena. Never been a fan of Golota, but I'm of the opinion that he is simply a better boxer than either Skelton or Williams.

neither skelton or williams are ranked within the top 15 of the WBA dont dont see how it can happen but then again anythingz possible these days. Call me crazy but I'd giv skelton a tiny tiny tineeee chance against toney after toney's fat showing against ruiz. I mean skelton might maul all over toney and lets face it toney's stamina at HW is questionable to say the least - I came across a tape with toney-holyfield and noticed toney was breathing v hard after 6 rounds whilst holyfield wasnt even slightly heaving.

You cannot be serious Skelton would have zero chance against Toney.

No offence but that's one of the funniest things I have ever seen on here.

What is phenomenal about Toney to me is that he was the contemperary of Benn and Eubank.

Can you just imagine for a second that either Nigel Benn or Chris Eubank were still active and not only that but they had just lifted the WBA HEAVYWEIGHT title?!!!

I thought Eubank went great guns giving Carl Thompson a scrap 5/6 years back but winning a Heavyweight crown?

I think Eubank could possibly have been competitive against a big lug like Ruiz.

I would have loved to have seen Eubank vs Nelson. I actually thought Eubank beat Thompson in match 1 and was on his way to winning the rematch but for the eye - the fight was already won on the cards.

Anyway, what Eubank didn't like about Thompson was his sheer strength, I don't think Nelson is as strong as Thompson but a much better boxer.... However, was he a better boxer than Eubank?

Toney can make a ton of money and have relatively easy defenses agaisnt either Tyson or Tua. Both short, stumpy armed poweful sluggers who are past their prime, slow and dont move a lot, easy to hit.

Sure Tyson is shot, but give him 1 0r 2 bums and his marketability will be huge. Though not a real threat (unless Toney really breaks the scales and is very slow himself), Tyson will bring a lot of money. More than Byrd or even Vitali would.

Tuaman is an even easier fight, though the money wont be as good as a Tyson fight.

Some may feel this i sa waste of time, but this is pro boxing, and money talks. Toney should go after the big paydays. Get Bowe, Tyson, Tua in a row and retire rich. :TU: Those guys have little chance and their name will sell the fights for big bucks.

I think people forget that Toney was seriously slimmed down when he was a middle and supermiddle, he's naturally bigger and more comfortable at the higher weight. Not only that, but Ruiz really was a poor heavyweight champion and despite being strong, is very slow and couldn't handle guys like Toney and Roy Jones' speed and skills.

I'd like to see Toney get in really good shape. He'll need to be to get the better of the likes of Byrd and Vitali... well that's a different ball game altogether because he's massive and I think Toney would have to go at him like he was Joe Frazier... thing is, Toney just loves to dictate the pace and he won't be able to do that against VK.
