Matthew Barney question

Post by stujones »

As you may or not be aware, Matthew Barney's controvesial defeat when challenging for the EBU title is being shown tonight on Eurosport.

Anyway, I do have question on Barney (people might find it a bit contradictory the way I harp on about versions of the world title) - BUT, does anyone know if Barney is still the WBU Light Heavyweight champion.

No, EBU will not allow fighters that holds any kind of a world title to fight for their titles.

I think he gave it up to fight for Euro title. As you cant fight for euro with a world title. He was unable to get any one defend it against. It was on local news about a fight in Australia for WBu falling through.

I thought that may be the case - I wasn't sure though what was the situation if a world champion lost the EBU challenge.

It aint a great fight to watch to be honest. I like Barney but he infuriates me at times, like I want to throw that right hand for him. He probably did edge the fight but in Germany thats never going to be enough to get a decision, he's gotta know that by now.

I only saw the first 7 or so rounds, but Barney was walking it...

He looked good. :o

that's right, barney looked good. Very Good reflexes, good jab, nice movement, quick hands, effective back foot boxing. ok he ran a bit but he LANDED, and made Ulrich look shit.

Barney really surprised me, he's improved a lot since I last saw him. He hardly got hit at all! That is, unless he fell apart in the last few rounds.

I watched the Ulrich-Barney fight live.....I thought Barney pissed it at first, but then became less effective in the second half of the fight, and ulitmately this cost him. I remember Barney's corner telling him in no uncertain terms that Ulrich would try and do him in the last round so he basically rain thinking he'd got the fight won. Shame really - if he'd had one good round out of the last 2 or 3 he would have won.

Anyway, I thought Barney won, but that it was close. I wouldn't call it a robbery, but he made Ulrich look very, very bad and had he been a little more agressive he would have won.

Watched the fight last night. It made me fornicating angry. Ullrich felt embarrassed claiming the victory.

No, that was a robbery. I will post a score total again but there was only 2 rounds I can remember giving to Ulrich.

It wasn't as bad a fight as I was told, and I thought Barney fought well. Sure, he has got a boring style - but he was throwing a fair amount of punches and they weren't pitta patta - he won the fight and he won it big.

It is frustrating that had he not pissed about the 12th round (one of the clear Ulrich rounds) he would have won the fight on the official cards - even if he would have leveled the round he would have had a majority draw.

With a little more effort Barney could've won the fight, somewhat like Starie against Ottke.

If he would've gotten the decision is a completely different story. You never know, a draw was not that bad in this case
