Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
Discuss? Just don't see how Tony wins.
Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
You can't say that after one off night. Do you think Tony would fight Nathan with these tactics?SteveDow wrote:Discuss? Just don't see how Tony wins.
Unfair comment if you ask me.
Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
For me Nathan is at a more advanced stage of his career than Tony, I'm a big fan of both but I believe Nathan has too much for Tony if they met soon.

Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
Even before tonight id favour Cleverly over Bellew(there at differant levels)
Very disappointed at his performance tonight, just a bit worried thinking if he dont knock em out he seems abit lost&will be found out before he get anywhere near Cleverly...Hope im wrong...

Yer, nathan miles ahead, bellew may of had an off night or maybe he has stepped up a level and cant find the extra gear that he needs.
without any disrespect to anyone, cleverly v bellew for me is simular to haye v harrison, it will be over within 3 rounds guarenteed.

Wouldn't you look silly if Harrison lands the left hand early and does Haye?jessi wrote:Yer, nathan miles ahead, bellew may of had an off night or maybe he has stepped up a level and cant find the extra gear that he needs.

It's easy to sit and back heavy favourites but this is boxing. Ask Buster Douglas.
You've used a silly comparison
Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
Smigga, I respect you and I understand why you want to defend your mate but I'll go into more detail about my observation. Firstly, Tony relies on his power way too much. This is ok at lower level when opponents have no footspeed and can't evade the shots. Tony has a habit of delibarately planting his feet before he throws a shot and you can see this a mile off. Someone like Cleverly would never be caught like this. Bellew needs to throw more faints before letting the right hand go. Secondly, Bellew simply doesn't have the boxing skills to out slick Cleverly who is fast and elusive. Thirdly I'm not sure Tony can take Clevs power which is decent at this level. All in all he'd be embarrased in my opinion.

Smigga
You are making yourself look very silly, Tony only fights one way, Nathan would play with him sorry.

Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
to be fair they are at different stages in their career give it a year and a half and then its fair to make a comparison.taffytoon wrote:Smigga

Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
Its to early to compare, i remember that Cleverly didn't look great against Joey Vegas , at about the same time in his career as Bellew is at now.
If they met last week, then yes i'd say Cleverly would be a favourite, but its all about meeting when both are at their prime, and thats not yet for either.

Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
Bellew is no way in Nathan class looking for bombs all the time, had a little step up in class and looked average .,
Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
Taffy, you've seen him how many times? I've been in the same gym as him since I was 16.... Sparred many many rounds. Look he had an offnight, I'm not defending him as a mate I'm defending what I've seen. Very diplomatic reply though, thankstaffytoon wrote:Smigga

Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
Yes but it isn't Cleverly Calling Bellew out is it? Tony needs to look at this fight and realise that he is no where near ready for Clev. I like Tony but some of the comments about him being ready to fight Clev is silly IMHO. You will now see an awful lot of fightrs lining up to take Tonies 0 Because it is very doable.Old bones Ian wrote:Its to early to compare, i remember that Cleverly didn't look great against Joey Vegas , at about the same time in his career as Bellew is at now.

Thanks Steve, great points. Tony just f*cked up tonight looking for the ko. I text him today wishing him all the best and the first thing I said was "relax and don't look for it"SteveDow wrote:Smigga, I respect you and I understand why you want to defend your mate but I'll go into more detail about my observation. He CAN box, and well.... Just a bad day at the office and again I say this as an observer and not a mate.

I have seen him a few times as Tony will tell you, if you honestly think he is ready to fight Clev you are being very silly. This is a fact.Smigga wrote:Taffy, you've seen him how many times? Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
I really like Tony and I want him to do well but we have to be honest here, this was an awful performance. It's all good and well praising him because he's on boxrec and a nice guy etc but he seriously needs to go back to the drawing board. To be honest he looked like a poor mans Enzo Maccarinelli tonight. Constantly looking for the big shot, no head movement, no subtlety and overconfidence which is unjustified. Harsh but true. Hope he focuses on using his boxing skills and learns from this.
Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
smigga i bet your happy he done sh1t, i bet it made your day.
ajisafe felt power but bellew couldnt go through the gear's as he aint strong at l.heavy.

Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
That's a really good point. Too often we're judging fighters based on one performance, but as history has shown time and time again, any fighter can have an off night. In fact, you can argue that these are the times where they learn the most.Old bones Ian wrote:Its to early to compare, i remember that Cleverly didn't look great against Joey Vegas , at about the same time in his career as Bellew is at now.

I'm using an extreme example just to make a point, but look at the way Benn responded to the Watson loss - if this forum had been up and running then you can guarantee there'd have been people rushing to their keyboards to declare him a fraud and that he was finished. Surely no-one can deny that?
For me, the most important thing in light of this performance is not the performance itself, but how Tony responds to it. That will be the true measure of his potential.

Why for one minute would I be happy he performed badly. Don't answer that, it's not a question :>
Re: Cleverly would make Bellew look silly
Agreed mate. It was heartbreaking to see him produce that tonight. He'll be feeling as awful as anything but maybe it's the best thing that could have happened. I think he could do with a bit of time in the States, sparring with guys who can take his power and who will develop his skills. I think he can go very far in the sport and I'd love to see him go all the way but sometimes it all needs laying out.Smigga wrote:Thanks Steve, great points.
