He's still in the early stage of his career where lessons will be learned. Hopefully he's learned one tonight, whilst still winning may I add. All tonight has proved is that there is still work to do on his all round game and maybe he himself will now realise that he's not just going to blast everyone out of there. He was really expecting it tonight as were a lot of observers. The fact is the higher he climbs the more he's going to have to have more than just the knockout punch.

It was a poor night for Bellew and I think besides his lack of ideas once Ajisafe worked out how to stay out of the way of his right, the most disappointing aspect was his attitude. He constantly complained to the ref for very little holding, he's going to face far more hug friendly fighters than he did tonight in his career but he just kept on complaining. Also taking out his frustration by hitting behind the head etc when Ajisafe's back was turned every now and then. And finally not listening to what his corner asked, which I found strange as Tony seems such a student of the game so I'd expect him to know he should follow instructions.

I do think it's far too early to write him off though, he's still very raw and I thunk he can improve a lot with his potential

I think we're underestimating Bellew's ability to learn and adapt from this performance and what a tough and slippery operator Ajisafe is.

Tonight's experience will have done Bellew the world of good - he might not think that now - but it's clearly exposed what he needs to work on. He loaded up too much with the right hand, he lacked accuracy and tried too hard for the KO. Actually, I think Tony enjoyed his best success with the left hook but he didn't throw it as frequently and neglected the body.

It's far too early to write Bellew off based on this as it is Anthony Farnell as a top-level trainer, whose advice, rather like Bellew's performance, didn't overly impress me tonight. To all those who make Cleverly a big favourite against Bellew I'd ask them to think again. Unlike Ajisafe, Bellew will not have to go looking for Cleverly, he does crack hard and is only going to improve on this performance IMO.

Smigga your a good lad for comming on and fighting Tonys corner but to be honest you dont have to.. The fight was sheduled for 12 round and although Bomber didnt box the best he can, he still recovered from i decent knock down to go on and win the fight.. What else do people want from him?? He isnt on the same level as Cleverly , hens the fact hes holding the Commenwealth belt and fighting against Bob Afisafe and Nath has just beat a unbeaten German for a World Title shot.. The 2 fights alone show the gulf between then... I like what Bellew did by using Clevs name, hes using Clev as a marker to where he wants to be some day... Would Clev make Tony look silly?? who knows, any fight at anytime, anything can happen :TU:

i think Cleverly would handle Bellew comfortably, but I agree it's not fair to make that theoretical match up given the different stages they are at, even if Bellew has been calling him out, which I don't know, but seems to be what I've heard tonight.

I thought Bellew boxed like a "bully" tonight, not least when he was holding the left hand up to Ajisafe's nose with scant regard looking to measure him - although he at least showed some class afterwards, cos after he lamped poor Bob when Bob had his hands down after the ref broke em around 5 or 6 I don't think it made him look good.

A lot of credit must go to Bob tonight who said that he was not going to get put away and was as good as his word :TU: :TU: .....even decking the favourite along the way. Bob can come again and he will do and good luck to him. At his age, a British title assault is not out of the question at some point in the future!

Bellew was lucky he wasn't fighting a man that used BOTH hands tonight. I think Cleverly is a consumate athlete, has a good amount of skill and is a very intelligent guy. He'd cotton on to Bellew early and have enough brains and power to keep him at bay quite comfortably, probably getting rid of him in 6-8 rounds.

I can only wonder at how he's pulled a British Commonwealth European title out the bag as well as top A Levels and a degree in Maths. He's not Calzaghe but he is heading to the top and I hope he makes it.

sounds a bit pots and kettles Adam.....I'd never seen Bellew box b4 tonight but agree some "star struck" fckers on here tend to blow smoke right up people's back passages if they happen to post on Boxrec....then u come out and say that Bellew will beat Cleverly at some point in the future....despite Cleverly saying he doesn't think the fight will happen....being, as it is, that he is looking at World honours. How so?

i'm gutted watching Tony tonight. I've followed his career for a while and feel like he's one of the few charismatic boxers out there who really love the sport more than anything else.

The major disappointment for me is that despite him being such a scholar of the game, he made some very basic mistakes. Firstly not finding a plan B when his Plan A became incredibly predictable (literally using the left hand to measure up to swing a haymaker right), and secondly the complaining to the referee and his opponent about holding. At a higher level both of these things will really hurt him if he doesn't drop them from his game straight away.

Most frustrating is that I'm sure he knows this better than anyone. Ajisafe boxed decently at times and when he started to find his rhythm Tony didn't get behind the jab and start taking that away from him. He just carried on planting his feet and trying to chuck bombs and got caught a few times - against quicker and higher class opponents he would have got badly beaten tonight, and at the moment that includes Cleverly (based on last weeks performance)

I saw him on the Kahn Newcastle show where he hurt his hand early on and wasn't able to force a stoppage and he got similarly impatient and frustrated. As I say, the lad knows boxing 1000 times more than I do, it's his life, so he's got to get his head right when he isn't able to put opponents away after a couple of rounds and get back to showing that he can box as well as bang.

Cleverly is very athletic and fast, and that would be the problem for Tony now, he acknowledged at the end of the fight that he's still learning and let's hope tonight is a wake up call to him to go back in the gym and get rid of the rust, and do what he's studied all these years, put it into practise in the next fight. It would do him good to have another fight that goes a few rounds where he has to face someone awkward and put up with everything and anything that comes because if he does get to a higher level, he's going to have to deal with a lot more than a bit of leaning.

He said himself, "back to the drawing board", and thankfully for him he can put it right in a few weeks on the Smigga undercard. I'm sure he wants to smash people out fast in order to progress and excite at pace, but he's got the hunger to be a real Champion so hopefully he'll take a few more fights to get himself up to the standard he needs to get to.

He'll probably need to be a little bit better conditioned to cope with Cleverly and certainly more focussed on his boxing, but there's no way he'd fight Cleverly like he did Ajisafe. One things for sure, he can make that fight more than competitive if he irons out the creases in his game, he has the power to hurt anyone in that division and Cleverly likes to impress too..at the moment Clevs speed and experience puts him a few steps ahead, but Tony B has the talent and hunger to get himself into that league if he's able to make improvements and adjustments.

Might be the bad night that he needed to focus him on what he needs to do. I certainly hope so.

Bellew looked awful. Ajisafe always pulled straight back or ducked down. Nothing else really. Just once he could have thrown an uppercut after the jab, instead of the swinging right from miles away, often with his backfoot in the air. In a way Bellew was lucky Ajisafe didn´t really know what to do offensively. He would miss Bellew with counterpunches, when Bellew was rarely moving his head. I don´t think Ajisafe is as durable as Bellew made him look. Somebody will use him to create a favourable comparison to Bellew, DeGale or Groves maybe. Nevertheless props to Ajisafe, who didn´t play the role of the victim, and gave a courageous effort within his limits.

without any disrespect to anyone, cleverly v bellew for me is simular to haye v harrison, it will be over within 3 rounds guarenteed.
Wouldn't you look silly if Harrison lands the left hand early and does Haye?
It's easy to sit and back heavy favourites but this is boxing. Ask Buster Douglas.
You've used a silly comparison :TU:
to be honest i dont think its a silly comparison at all, im just saying i dont think bellew would last 3 rounds with cleverly just like i dont think harrison will last 3 rounds with haye, the only thing bellew has over harrison is his still learning, i wish tony the best of luck and im sure his fight last night has made him a better fighter already. :TU:

Ah give Bellew a break! It was a great learning fight and I'm sure he'll be all the better for it next time out. I remember earlier in Cleverly's career he struggled with journeyman Joey Vegas in a fight many people thought he lost. After that fight, if you had said he will be a world champion, people would have laughed at you. But look at him now. Don't judge a fighter on one fight alone. Ajisafe is the type of fighter who can make you look bad - he said himself he's a "tricky" fighter.

If they met last week, then yes i'd say Cleverly would be a favourite, but its all about meeting when both are at their prime, and thats not yet for either.
