Local rivalries.

Post by Broc »

Im currently reading Nigel Benns Biography. A great read. He is a real character both inside and outside of the ring. I remember being glued to the footage of his fights when he was in his prime.
The sport had great characters when Benn, Eubank, Watson, McClellan, Toney, Collins and Roy Jones were super middleweights and then there was Calzaghe / Reid / Richie Woodhall.

Watching old footage of how Benn fought, it was wreckless stuff, the man was some puncher and great value for money.

Nothing beats good local rivalries like Benn / Eubank / Collins, Skelton / Rogan / Harrison / Williams or to a lesser degree Wayne Alexander / Anthony Farnell / Mehrud Takaloo. I hope that Duddy / Lee / Macklin turns into a similar rivalry. Sure Duddy looks to be the outsider in that trio, but this is boxing and hes a proud strong man, he can rough people up and I wouldnt count him out just yet.

I like some good old fashioned rivalries too, I think they bring out the best in the boxers in the ring and gives the press something to get interested in outside of the ring.

I think rivalries give boxing good exposure but it doesn't have to be local. It does however have to mean that the rivals do actually fight each other unlike the Hatton and Witter incidents!
