Charlie Kane v Georgie Smith, 31/10/1998

Post by Rokesmith »

Hello,
I'm trying to get hold of a video of Charlie Kane v Georgie Smith, Leisure & Tennis Centre, Southend, United Kingdom, 31/10/1998, 12 rounds non-title - it may at the time have been shown on Eurosport.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

99 per cent certain it was shown on Eurosport, if memory serves Georgie was promoted by Matchroom, they will almost certainly have the fight in there archives, try Matchroom boxing on the website of Matchroom

I'm not Georgie Smith and don't know how he is doing, although coincidentally, I note one of the posters on the 'Sparring Offer' topic today mentions that he sparred with a Georgie Smith in the past (don't know if it's the same one).
I see Charlie Kane every once in a while. I wouldn't want to compromise his anonymity without permission, but I think I'd be ok to say that he is doing well. A few pounds over his fighting weight, but in good shape nonetheless.
Cheers.

I just had a look at my own archives and strangely I didn't record that one. It was shown on Eurosport, which was a nice starter before the McCreesh / Dean Francis fights on Sky, and the finale with Naz v McCullough. It was actually the night when those tragic shoulder problems all started for Francis.

It didn't work out well for Georgie Smith either that night. Great atmosphere though, I remember him coming out to Elton Johns' "Made In England".

Used to love watching Georgie Smith when I was younger with my dad on the telly. Exciting and nice style if I remember rightly. Bad haircut and great shorts

I'd be interested to know what he's up to too. And charlie Kane.
I was at Roche vs Kane and Roche vs Smith in his 1st defence.

Kane didn't have a busy start to his pro career, 9 fights in 4 years, and was out for a year before his challenge to Ross Hale for the British title, so that was always going to be a huge task for a relatively novice pro.
