Again, all one has to do is actually watch the footage. Benn does't get pushed by anyone. A hand comes out to try and prevent him from hitting his nut on some kind of monitor but nobody pushes him back up and certainly not back into the ring.orbtastic wrote:A myth perpetuated by the man who said he did it? Why did Reg say "they've parked the rules at the gate tonight" just as Benn is back in the ring?

40 seconds in, clear as day. Two hands come out in an attempt to stop his head hitting a piece of their equipment but I don't see no push. Nothing even resembling a push.
The way this has snowballed you would think Newbon picked Benn's lifeless body up off the floor and carried him back into the ring! Benn got back in there of his own will 100%

I think I've only watched it twice since the night.
Just Newbon over exaggerating then? I think that fight did something to him, he's a gibbering wreck interviewing Benn.

Who knows, maybe Newbon just got caught up in the excitement of it all, has never seen it since and just remembers it like that?

I think Michael Barrymore got off really effing lightly on these forums.
I mean, come on, he was at a party where a bloke got literally bummed to death
Imagine if Ricky Hatton was at that party, we would never hear the end of it on here.
1 rule for 1, another for another, I suppose.

Foul.
I have always thought the same. No disrespect to Benn, but the refereeing was atrocious. McClellan would have had him out of there in round 1, had Benn not been saved by the referee's constant uneccessary intervention.
It was almost as if the referee felt pressured to make the contest last a few rounds, because there was no explanation for why he kept breaking them up when there was no holding going on.

Re: Gerald McClellen
Is it that important that he may have been pushed back in the ring? Bit like the long count when Tyson floored Douglas. These things happen and GM still had the chance to finish the job same as Tyson.
Back on subject-If i remember correctly, GM Bought one or two of his pitbulls with him to the UK when he fought Benn.

Aye, you can't blame him for trying to take a bit of credit because other than being called a cunt live on Your On Sky Sports http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sYAgkvG ... re=relatedMachoMan09 wrote:It was perhaps the greatest boxing spectacle ever in this country. He wasn't helped back into the ring, arms went up from the TV crew to prevent him landing on them and their equipment.orbtastic wrote:A myth perpetuated by the man who said he did it? Why would Newbon lie?
Why did Reg say "they've parked the rules at the gate tonight" just as Benn is back in the ring?
A boxer cannot be helped into the ring by his corner or an official, a boxer cannot be disqualified for a TV commentator preventing him from injuring himself or others.

Re: Gerald McClellen
I don't know if Bennie remembers this but during the weigh in, Gerald McClellan got into a row with Nigel Benn's dad and threatened to either put his son in a coma or kill him - I am sure that's what transpired as the weigh in turned really nasty, does anyone else remember this - if it had been the other way round and Nigel Benn had been put in a wheelchair by Gerald McClellan - what do you think Gerald's attitude would have been?
Re: Gerald McClellen
Also, the quote above (bold) is selective, within the same sentence Reg says something like 'although not helped in...' then finishes the sentence with the above.boxingchat wrote:He wasn't helped back into the ring, arms went up from the TV crew to prevent him landing on them and their equipment.orbtastic wrote:A myth perpetuated by the man who said he did it? I think Tyson was robbed. If you watch the replay, Douglas was totally on queer street, I don't believe he could ever have made it to his feet had that count been administered properly, he was all over the place.Terminator666 wrote:Is it that important that he may have been pushed back in the ring? The knockdown came near the end of the round, and Tyson had no time to finish the job.
Douglas did remarkably well to recover during the minutes rest because he was nailed with one hail-mary of an uppercut.
I think though, that even had Tyson won that fight, the myth of his invincibility would have been severely dented, because Douglas made him look very ordinary in there. The seeds of Tyson's destruction were already sown - he looked totally disinterested going into the fight.

Karmas a bitch.
I am split on my feelings on G-Man though, yeah he wasn't the nicest of guys but he was such a monster in the ring, the way he dispatched opponents with ease was a sight to behold, have a look on youtube and watch his KO of Danny Mitchell, that's how you knock someone out.
Re: Gerald McClellen
I agree with you Tyson was robbed he had Douglas beaten in those brief moments. It would have been nice if he had pulled off the victory and had a wake up call . But I doubt it, more likely someone like Ruddock would have ended beating him up as he had idiots around him at the time.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I think Tyson was robbed. In regards to McClelland and Benns father, it was all part of the show, and we forget benn was no angel. He projected a nice image for the cameras but he was a brutal nasty man at this time of his life who would take anyone on.
That sure was a great era for intimidatig nasty MW's Benn,Mclellan,Toney and Barkley. All badasses with a story behind them who were great box office
Re: Gerald McClellen
It was probably ITV's greatest boxing night, and it quickly turned into their worst.

No way would Ruddock have ever beaten Tyson, far too one dimensional. Tyson struggled with athletic heavyweights with a strong jab and good movement. Tyson was relatively poor and disinterested when he fought Ruddock yet still beat him.

This is a blast from the past.
I remember McC's unsavoury extracurricular activities being discussed a few years back.
Made me lose all sympathy for the man. He's where he deserves to be, quite frankly.

That story about him buying the dog for one of his pitbulls to kill is very disturbing if true-I could have no sympathy for what happened to him if that was true.
