Post by AmateurBoxingInsider »

Its never to soon to look for the boxers wanting to represent USA in the 2016 Olympics! Is there any young amateur boxers that have caught your eye in National tournaments this year? :bag: I have been researching and looking at tournament results the past few years and I have a list of boxers I keep an eye out for when I go to the tournaments. Hopefully those competing for 2012 will also compete for 2016. At least some, not all. Otherwise we'll end up with some kid that is 13 or so right now representing USA Boxing, which isn't bad, but his experience won't be high enough to have a great shot at winning a medal.

I retired from Boxing and Train Our Son Chase and some other Boxers now and I agree with teasy re age.............. I told Chase he will only be 19 in 2016 Olympics then turning 20 in November of 2016 So if he wanted He could stay Amateur another 4 Years and Fite to make the 2020 Team. I would support him All the Way as Chase also stand out Football player in Highschool now but get Scholarship to Missouri Western State University here in St. Joseph, Missouri then can still train here with me and prepare for 2020 Olympics ???????????????? He Loves the Sport of Boxing So Much So as long as that continues I have to admit its Fun for me coaching him and taking him to all these bouts etc.... Helps him in Football, Basketball, Track, Everything as I feel Boxing Helps young men and women in So many ways as Chase also a Great Student - Straight A's.

:D There are so many great boxers coming up and so much time before '16. There will be so much growth between now and then it's going to be fun to watch the young guys grow. I've been around just long enough to see some of the bantams now boxing on TV. All of you who've been around for a long time have been really blessed to watch boxers grow. I'm jealous but looking forward to the next generation. But I think the real question is how many will stay in the ranks and not go for the money. It's easy pickings for managers/promoters these days with so much bad feelings about the state of amateur boxing. I think that will play more of a factor about who makes the next two Olympic Teams. Depending on how successful WSB is, there may not be a lot to keep amateurs in the amateurs.

I saw Chase fight at the 07' Ringside tourn. I believe the fight that I watched, he lost a very controversial decision. Regardless, Rob, you gave me a photo opp. immediately after coming out of the corner after that loss, which I thought was pretty damn cool of you.

Chase looked real good that night, and that was four years ago...ill keep my eyes on him.

i saw chase at the ringside tourney and i think him against mark reyes jr. will be a very good bout they both have power. and it would be a matter of time before they meet. mark reyes jr. just won the pal tourney at 154 but he was at 146 as far as i seen no one would stand and trade punch with mark i think chase power and marks power would make it very interesting to watch!! mark reyes jr is looking at the 2016 also his very new he just had his 20th bout but his fast powerfull and becoming a puncher boxer!!

I have actually seen Chase fight multiple times at National Tournaments. He has impressed me with his "professional" style. Great Jab.. one of the best I have seen at his age. He uses his height well and does have power from what I've seen in the 3 or 4 fights I have watched him in. I got my eyes on Chase for sure. I have never seen Mark Reyes fight, probably because he has only 20 fights like Beast21 said. Sounds like they might meet up at a tournament here soon.

milton santiago is another name that comes to mind he won the ringside tourney in the last 3yrs i believe and won the pals this year and he was runner up for the silver gloves.. mark reyes jr also fights more like a pro thats why i think it will be very interesting to see them two in the same ring. mark reyes jr got runner up last year at the pals he lost against kareem martin but he only had 8bouts. then he got 3rd at the silver gloves, and this year he won the pals im sure you all will see more of mark reyes jr.

I watched Chase Calloway fight at the regional tournament this past weekend.
He look so impressive, with his 6'0 height (great effective jab) he looks the best that I have ever seen him in the 8-10 bouts I have seen him fight in. It will be an interesting matchup at Nationals with him and Mark Reyes Jr. *EVERYONE WATCH THIS ONE IF THEY MEET UP AT NATIONALS* Both have great power but I believe exprience is key.. Chase Calloway has around 85 fights from what I have heard. Also Kevin Salgado and Nico Hernandez look very impressive as well. Nico (I believe) if he wins this years tournament it will be the first time ever that someone has won 5 straight National Silver Glove titles!!! Goodluck Nico! Also other names to throw out are Ryan Thurman and Manny Green. Region 5 is stacked this year top to bottom.

Definitely pulling for Nico. However, he won't be first, but he'll be on a short list of boxers in Silver Gloves History.

The only boxer to ever win 6 years straight is Raushee Warren (Cincinatti, Ohio '98-'03).

Ricardo Williams (Cincinnati, OH '93-'97) won 5 years straight along w/ Raushee.

There have been more than a few to win 4 consecutive National Silver Gloves:
Oba Carr (Detroit, MI '85-'88)
Ricardo Williams (Cincinnati, OH '93-'96)
Raushee Warren (Cincinnati, OH '98-'01)
Devon Alexander (St. Louis, MO '99-'02)
Dominic Wade (Largo, MD '03-'06)
Tramaine Williams (New Haven, CT '05 -'08)
Nico Hernandez ('97-'00)

There have been several boxers who have won 4 Nationals Silver Gloves but not in consecutive years:
Steve Leuvano (Los Angeles, CA '93, '95- '97)
Rodrigo Mosquera (East Los Angeles, CA '94, '96-'98)
Aaron Williams (Cleveland, OH '98, '00-'02)
Victor Pasillas, (East Los Angeles, CA '03, '05-'06, '08)

Hopefully, Nico can join Ricardo and Raushee this year on that short list of 5 titles.

BTW, all of this info is from the records that the late Lensy "LP" Lane gave me. If I missed anything it is just my oversight as there are a lot of records (I have back to 1985 but the tourney goes back to 1968) but I went through them the other night trying to figure this out--this is how my tally ended.

Kullen the boxing historian! It is fun to look back at the records.

Notice that many of those boxers have done very well in the sport and the young ones are likely to do so in the future.

Do you know what weight did chase came in to the tournament? this would be a great match up if chase came in at 147lb. mark reyes jr. won the state and the regional silver gloves so he will be at the nationals.

I did not realize that Rodrigo Mosquera wont four years. He beat me in the finals of 94 then i went on to win it in 95 and 96. Then loast a questionable decision in the semi finals in 97 to Frankie Caruso, who I beat in 95.. Thanks for the stats here though. I remember Ricardo walking around the lobbies with all the belts around his neck. It was nuts, I used to think that kid was a god. LOL>

Neither did I Travis, until I started looking through everything. Hey is Drew your brother? Do you have any video from those years, like your Drew vs. Anthony Peterson? Did you beat Nonito Donaire in '96. Can't tell from my records but he was in your bracket in '96.

I did sir. I beat Nonito the first round. Drew beat Anthony in the championship fight. He is my younger brother. We both won it the same year. It was my bros first year winning it and it was my second in a row. I should have won it three times in a row and if we could talk to LP (R.I.P) I should have won it a fourth but got messed over pretty bad and didnt even make it to nationals the fourth time in a row. I only say that because three of the kids in that division that year I had already beat. It is pretty cool to say I beat Nonito Donaire as he is in the top 5 pound for pound by ring magazine now. He is a nice guy and I am glad he is doing so well. He really deserves it.
