Caron Gonzalez -a former sparring partner of Kid Tunero- was a top Cuban trainer who worked with some very good talent: Angel Espada, Jose Stable, Pedro Laza, Juan Arroyo, Miguel Barreto, Luis Vinales, Dario de Asa and he also trained Paret for a good chunk of his career.
Caron told me that Benny's problem began after the draw with Federico Thompson two years before his death. At the time Benny complained to him of sudden sharp pains in his head and occasional double vision. Caron talked to Manny Alfaro -the manager- who shrugged it off stating that all fighters get headaches. Caron talked to Paret and asked him to retire and the fighter answered that the money was too good and that he would not retire. Caron resigned as trainer and Alfaro signed up Maceo to replace Caron.
In the two years after that Paret fought some tough fights including the Fullmer fight. At the Hall of Fame I had a brief chat with Fullmer who told me that he was surprised at Paret's capacity to take a shot.

It was quite moving in the documentary on Emile Griffith when he went and met Paret's son, who said he bore him not ill will for what happened.
Paret was a tough, tough man.
