Which boxer would you like to see a movie about...
... which hasn't been done already?
I say George Foreman.
It could start with his loss to Ali, with the middle portion being human-interest, and the third act being his comeback, with key fights (the first one, the one against Cooney which turned him from a curiosity to a contender again, Holyfield). The finale would, of course, be the Hollywoodesque Moorer win. Anything after that is superfluous to the narrative.

The Duran trilogy...
Duran I
Poor kid in Panama going through the trials and tribulations of poverty ending up with him beating Buchanan.
Duran II
The excesses of fame and adoration. Duran goes through the division like a knife through butter eventually beating leonard in Montreal. But then the trappings of fame and new 'friends' take their toll and Duran loses the rematch. We leave the beaten Duran, reputation in tatters...
Duran III
Fat Roberto, the butt of every joke, stumbles his way through the autumn years, sometimes still brilliant at others farcical. The bumpy road of a has-been who eventually returns like a phoenix to beat Barkley.

I've been saying it for years. He's so marketable, recognisable, & the story is simply an astonishing one.oliverfennell wrote:... which hasn't been done already?

It's surprising & unfortunate it has not received any attempts.

They'll probably let it marinate for a little while longer. The further you get from the actual accomplishment the more legendary it usually gets.Goodnight, Irene wrote:I've been saying it for years. True. Charles Shufford played a pretty convincing George Foreman (in terms of appearance) during the 2001 film, Ali.

A young Wesley Snipes could've pulled off the Pernell Whitaker look.

Imagine how dull the fight scenes would be, thoughsg1985 wrote:Hollywood could stress an inspirational film out of Hopkins, life on the streets, prison, early loss, winning the middleweight title. Wouldn't be the best but it's the kind of stuff Hollywood loves.

Nigel Benn
Starting off with his early life as a teenage delinquent, followed by his army career, boxing career and then his struggles post career.
Too much to fit in one film though.

How about the Lion of Cullician Himself: Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. Born a disused railway carriage and rose all the way up to become of the greatest pound for pound fighters of the last 20-30 years or so one stage 87-0 titles at Super Featherweight Lightweight and Light Welterweight, the best pound for pound fighter of the last 20-30 years, plus the drug and alcohol addiction and an affair with Selma Hayek I read somewhere

stanley ketchel. the story would contain all sorts of high drama both in and out of the ring.

James Carlos Blake's 'The Killings Of Stanley Ketchel' is an interesting fictional treatment of his life. You've got the foundation of a screenplay right there.turn2stone wrote:stanley ketchel. the story would contain all sorts of high drama both in and out of the ring.

Supposedly a Ray Robinson bio-pic is in the works

Rachael Horovitz, the producer who originally set up the Michael Lewis book Moneyball at Columbia about overachieving Oakland A's GM Billy Beane, has found a new sports figure to hang a picture on. Horovitz has teamed with Recount screenwriter Danny Strong to option the Wil Haygood biography Sweet Thunder: The Life and Times of Sugar Ray Robinson. Haygood will write the screenplay. He met Strong on The Butler, the Sony Pictures Entertainment film that has Lee Daniels attached to direct and Laura Ziskin to produce a film about Eugene Allen, who observed the civil rights struggle as an eight-term White House butler and was brought back after retirement to see Barack Obama inaugurated as the first African American president. Strong wrote that script, based on a series of articles that Haygood’ wrote for the Washington Post.

I second that Stan Ketchel nomination. His 30 round rematch with Thomas was acclaimed the greatest fight of all time. There are many boxers with great stories going all the way back to Broughton. But how about Paddy Ryan? A guy steps off a bar stool and wins the championship in his debut fight after 87 rounds. Now that's a story!

Eddie Murphy was attached to a Sugar Ray project in the early 90's, but for one reason or another it never happened.tzyuforever wrote:Supposedly a Ray Robinson bio-pic is in the works

Do we really need another Mike Tyson movie. There's so many stories to tell in boxing history.

True, but you could say the same about Ali. There was already tons of Ali stuff, but nobody had done a good movie about him before.ben geoghegan wrote:Do we really need another Mike Tyson movie. There's so many stories to tell in boxing history.

Big George definitely needs something like this doing.

my favourite would have to be Harry Greb, in his short life he lived a hundred years.
they say he gave his mother a black eye when he was a baby and he proberly hit the doctor who slapped his arse when he was born.
Great tales are told of him.
