Re: Who Is Your Favourite Fighter Ever?
The fight was at 154lbs...The right weight class for the great Thomas Hearns. Even the great Sugar Ray Leonard would have been blown out by Tommy if they would have had the rematch in '84. I don't see too many fighters at 154lbs beating the great Hearns. Maybe ONLY the great Mike McCallum, that's it. Hearns at 154lbs, was a complete monster. Just like the great Bob Foster at light-heavyweight.BoxBuzz wrote:You seem to maintain a pretty objective viewpoint in spite of your bias. I think we disagree about just how evenly matched Duran and Hearns were. My take is that the outcome of that fight was a fluke. I believe you think it would be repeated in any follow up encounters. I see Duran as capable of frustrating Tommy and slipping his punches on average and would be more likely to win than lose. And Duran does not top my list of favorites, I do however believe he had top skills and intelligence. He surely had a bad night with Hearns! lol.elmersalsa wrote:Roberto Duran by far my favorite one.![]()

These are facts we cannot deny:
Duran was out of his prime.
Hearns was in his complete prime. He was 26 years old.
Duran was 33 years old. An age that should be hanging the gloves by then.
Duran was 20 pounds over his best weight. No movement of head and foot. Had no speed like in lightweight or welterweight.
Hearns was perfect for the super welterweight division...He was a monster. Duran? fat and overweight and way too slow.

Arturo Gatti was really my favorite, I'm not saying he's the best by any means, but he's the first fighter I ever absolutely loved to watch no matter who the opponent.

I like Charles, Johnson, Dempsey, Langford and Moore. But I didn't grow up with them and to have a real attachment to a figther you have to be a part fo their journey.
As a kid I loved Honeyghan and McGuigan. Local heroes were Pat Cowdell and Lester James.
I always wanted Hearns to win no matter who he fought (even Andries). He was such an exciting fighter.

Julio Cesar Chavez all the way.
Re: Who Is Your Favourite Fighter Ever?
'Terrible' Terry Norris was one of my favorites, as was Nigel Benn, Evander Holyfield and Julio Cesar Chavez, all where exciting fighters to watch and it's hard to pick just one. I particularly like the 'Mexican' boxing style but could name a different one of these on any given day.

Trinidad gotta be near the top all-time in that category, or am I being way off-base?
Re: Who Is Your Favourite Fighter Ever?
Got to be close. I remember seeing grown men cry with joy at his come back against Mayorga (a false dawn as it turned out). Cotto never quite achieved the same level of devotion. I'd be interested to know how popular Carlos Ortiz was in PR during his career.dajuggernaut wrote:Good one.Goodnight, Irene wrote:Chavez for Mexico?dajuggernaut wrote:Felix "Tito" Trinidad.

I don't think so. It's a fair call. He would be among the best in this category.dajuggernaut wrote:Good one.Goodnight, Irene wrote:Chavez for Mexico?dajuggernaut wrote:Felix "Tito" Trinidad.

marvin hagler. the guy was an absolute warrior who fought anybody who was brave enuff to get in the ring with him. he beat legends in duran and hearns and imo was unlucky against sugar ray. he was at his best against mugabi, a guy that was also a monster what a fight.

Indeed, he was. There are many more instances. Kid Gavilan in Cuba was another. Add Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis & Jack Dempsey for America.banjo wrote:Wasn't Duran massively celebrated in Panama?
