I do think that Amir Khan should temper down his comments otherwise he is going to alientate his fans over here, and I am sure we all want him to be quiet and get back into the Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles with Freddie Roach to get ready to fight Marcos Maidana his WBA Mandatory, because if he gets his gameplan wrong Maidana could at least give him a rough night as he has got the dig in his punches to pose Khan a few tough questions on the night as he showed against Victor Ortiz.

As for whether or not John Murray deserves a shot at a World Title. My answer is, He is ranked number 6 by Ring Magazine which is the most influential publication in this sport that we all love to watch and talk about, he is undefeated and holds the longest active unbeaten record won the Lonsdale Belt outright and has won the European belt so his record does say he deserves at least a World title eliminator if not a full title shot against a belt holder.

Acosta is a stylistic nightmare for Murray in that he uses loads of lateral movement (Murray like it best when his opponents stand in front of him) and can really punch. Here's highlights of his title winning effort against Antillon, who was undefeated and had received a lot of hype:

Vasquez is a good boxer and very tricky (lean back style) but isn't a big puncher and doesn't look very physically strong. Murray's educated pressure and greater physical strength could make it a hard night for Vasquez. Highlights of the Prescott fight:

acosta is a guy to avoid, no doubt. he has brilliant speed and when you hurt him he rugby tackles you to the floor, will try anything. i honestly think antillon would have dropped him with body shots and maybe even found a way to win if acosta hadn't done all that falling, slipping stuff. acosta has great speed and mobility.

he really hates it to the body, though.

vazquez is another tricky style, more amateurish looking though, and might be the best bet to try to bring over to these shores.

Innit ;)

The Khan/Murray situation is just the penchant for fans to side with the less glamorous guy, but Murray hasn't beaten anyone even close to the world top 10. If Khan had fought some of the guys Murray has fought, he'd have been torn to pieces by the critics, but for someone like Murray they're "learning fights" or "taking the traditional route".
To be fair to Murray, he started late and only had about 20 amature fights, so he really is/was learning, where as Khan had god knows how many amature fights at the highest level.

Funny how Chavez Jnr doesnt get the same leeway on here as Murray does, and I mean before he was involved in rip-off PPVs

He had the sum total of 0 amateur fights

do you class anyone who's not a name on the american circuit as "bums"?

even lawton and buckland who apparently had no business challenging for murray's titles (british then european) were coming off excellent wins over gethin and castle.

apparently murray should have been fighting the likes of the peterson bros, brandon rios, tough mexicans and so on. but surely that is for the next stage of his career, after dominating britain and europe. now, sky sports generally televise domestic fights for domestic fighters.

sigh...

chavez jr was milking his dad's name, that was his only reason for being there, he was struggling with clubfighters and got 2 or 3 controversial decisions in his favour. ppl seem desperate to compare murray with this or that guy, when the comparisons don't really fit.

at least we're getting somewhere - at one point it wa a boxrec majority that murray was crap and would never get to where he is now.

Murray hasn't done enough to earn a World Title shot yet.

Autobarn wrote:khan was fighting the guys murray fought - lawton - coming off a stoppage loss. murray fought lawton coming off an upset win, over a guy shortlisted to fight khan (gethin).

khan was getting shaken and dropped at domestic level (gomez, limond) - very small lightweights, if they were lightweights at all.

murray has come up without the kind of backing that khan has. it's a british industry geared owards british title fights and EBU title fights for the vast majority of the fighters. khan is one of the haves and murray is one of the have nots. so you can't apply the same standards. it's not about going for the less glamourous guy; the same rules do not apply to the amir khans as there's more financial muscle behind them - it's as simple as that.

murray has done the traditional route. the world level is NEXT. it amazes me how internet ppl ca't comprehend that. a better comparison would be rendall munroe - see how he's got to his title fight. (admittedly, the guy munroe beat for the EBU title was a world top 10 contender.)
Fair enough. But if Murray's comparative lack of experience justifies him fighting at a lower level than Khan, then surely his fans shouldn't have been bigging him up as a rival to Khan all these years. Either he's good enough to compete with Khan - in which case the same standards should be applied - or he isn't.

I was reading in this month's edition of The Ring which featured Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr's fight with John Duddy and in the opening page of the article entitled Can Chavez Jnr live up to Dad's Legacy it stated that when he turned professional with Bob Arum's Top Rank it says that Top Rank are merely "ringing the mouldy rag of nostalgia", but why single JCC Jr, it is not his fault that his father was one of the greatest pound for pound fighters of all time and a three weight world Champion who holds the record for the most world title fights (37) and successful title defences (31), but single him out, the are fighting sons out there trying to emulate their fathers like Hector Camacho Jnr, Ronald Hearns for example and they seldom get mentioned on here.

In relation to what has been said about Amir Khan by Oliver Fennell being dropped by both Willie Limond and Michael Gomez your are right they were both blown up Super Featherweights although Limond has fought as high as 11 stone in his career and Gomez has fought at 10 stone 10 as well. They both took Khan rounds and dropped Khan, However Khan dug deep in both those fights stopped both of them Limond in 8 and Gomez in 5 when Khan held the Commonwealth Lightweight title.

The big problem with Khan is seemingly he doesnt want to "waste" his time with these kind of fights.....of course when he gets accused of not giving british fighters a shot he always says something along the lines of " they ask for ridiculous money 3 times over what theyre worth and when they dont get the fight they go off crying in the press about how I dont want to fight them cos im scared".

I dont know which is true but I do know Khan is only 23, he shouldnt just be in the states all the time, he should be keeping up his profile in the UK and staying more active. Every fight doesnt need to be a Malignaggi, Maidana or Marquez, mix it up with a Murray fight now and than, if these guys are so inferior use it as marking time and learning time cos you're only 23 anyway.

Autobarn, you've brought this up a few times and I still don't really understand your point. You mention that Khan has (untill recently) fought lightweights and that's supposed to be a criticism. The man was a lightweight himself - so whats the problem?

I don't buy for one second that Khan was killing himself to make 9 stone 9. You don't show the strength he did to stop Limond late in the fight after getting hurt if he was not strong at the weight. You don't throw the number of punches he did vs Gary St Clair if he wasn't strong at the weight.

Why was it such an advantage that Khan fought these guys? Sure Khan was younger than Murray when he fought Lawton and has filled out more, but it was a legitimate Lightweight contest.

Also, are you implying that Lawton aged 33 (when he fought Murray) was a better fight than when he fought Khan at 30 - the defeat he was coming off (that you mention) was against the British champion and he was the reigning English champion. Why is it such a big deal that Gethin was SHORTLISTED to fight Khan?
