“Night Nurse” to take on John Baguley in debut championship encounter

Tyrone Nurse will once again take to the proverbial battlefield that is the boxing ring on Saturday 9th October in what may prove to be his toughest, but evidently most rewarding fight to date. The main event of the VIP boxing show at the Huddersfield Leisure Centre will see home fighter Nurse taking on the tough and deceptively skilled Jon Baguley for the British Masters Light-Welterweight belt.

Though the prize at stake is held in fairly low regard by many boxing fans, such a title should be favourably viewed as a vital tool to aid Nurse’s career advancement. Crucially, the contest marks Nurse’s first 10 round fight. Despite never previously boxing beyond six rounds, Nurse is adamant that the unchartered distance will raise no questions over his stamina come fight night; “There’ll be no problems with stamina, I regularly spar loads of rounds in the gym, so I don’t see any problem with making the jump from 6 round fights to 10”.

Whilst he showed no real concerns over the length of the contest, Nurse was less dismissive of his opponent Jon Baguley, a potentially dangerous operator whose most recent and probably prominent win came against promising Dagenham prospect Vinny Mitchell, who was stopped in the 4th of a 6 round fight. Nurse commented that “he (Baguley) is a tough lad and as he’s had a full 8 weeks to prepare we’ll expect the best from him. He can be very tricky and his record is a lot better than it looks”.

Nurse also believes that his preparation for the contest will give him the edge and displayed yet more confidence over his training; “I’ve been able to get some good sparring in with Curtis Woodhouse and (Leeds Light-Welter) Adil Anwar as an extra to give me something different”…the more variety in the sparring I have, the better”.

On the subject of potential future successes (subject of course to a win on the 9th,) Nurse made it clear that he is not in a rush to dominate the division domestically and will be ready when the time is right; “Obviously I’m not looking passed Baguley at the moment, but if I win on the 9th it will be nice to one day fight for the bigger titles…I’m in no rush at all though as I’m young and therefore have a lot of time to just learn and better myself as a fighter without worrying about age catching up with me”.

The bill at the Huddersfield Leisure Centre also features local big hitter and undefeated Light welterweight prospect Chad Gaynor, who will take on Reading’s Ibrar Riyaz. Patrick Walsh will face Ben Lawler in his 4th start and Jason McCalmon and Michael Smith are set to make their boxing debuts at super Middleweight and light Middleweight respectively. McCalmon will face Doncaster’s James Tucker and Smith opens his boxing career against southpaw Rick Boulter. Can they launch their careers successfully?

Tickets for the Nurse vs. Baguley Central Area title fight are priced at £30.00 general admission and £50.00 ringside.

I'm sure Baguley will make a good fight of this- he is better than his record suggests.

I thought this fight was for the Central Area light-weight title not British masters. Is Jon still the CA champ ?
