Mark Prince

Back in the day Mark was one of favourite fighters. Exciting, charismatic and compelling to watch. It's such a shame that he didn't fight again after his only loss.

Does anyone know why he didn't continue?

Funny, I was just remembering him too today- he beat Maurice Core in Manchester- after the first knockdown, when the ref had finished the count (to 8 etc) in the corner, Prince RAN across the ring to finishg the job. It's the only time I've ever seen that.

Checking out Core's record, he was a decent fighter too, never fought again after that loss. And a good undercard bout- those were the days.

I also remember he fough Michael Gale, who was a fruit and veg stall seller from Leeds. They looked similar, and had similar trucks, so the commentator could only distinguish them by saying one was the white boxer, the other the black boxer. :)

Good memories- from when there were some really well matched undercard fights.

The Gale fight was amazing. I can remember it like yesterday. Mark Prince was a little bit flash for me but could really fight and had loads of bottle. Michael Gale was like Henry Wharton but not quite as good; he had stacks of bottle as well.

Mark was a great fighter and now fights a different cause His son Kyle was stabbed to death outside his school in London and Mark has started a charity called the Kyle Prince foundation Kyle was a very talented footballer with his whole life ahead of him Mark has worked so hard on trying to stop knife crime

Mark was a hell of a puncher and gave Dariusz Michalczewski a good fight for the WBO title.

I remember when Mark exploded onto the scene as an amateur - he entered the ABA's after a hand full of fights and stopped nationally rated Kenny Nevers, Monty Wright and Chris Okoh on his way to the London ABA title. He was very good friends with Chambala Joof 'the Wild African' who never fulfilled his potential. Carlie Carew, Adrian Dodson's dad was involved with them both quite heavily I think.

Why did Core retire? Is he really 6'5"? He's obviously quite tall but 6'5" for a light heavy is Henry Maske proportions.

I used to like watching Prince but he was offensively minded to a fault at times. I'd have liked to have seen him and Crawford Ashley get it on.

Frank Grant - same camp as Core, retired after being stopped and his career never really got going after getting his biggest win - a shock stoppage of a disinterested Herol Graham.

I think Grant was definitely an over-achiever. I don't think Prince ever recovered from meeting Dariusz M in his prime - must be hard for your confidence when your 'game' is built around being able to walk through people and blast them out, only to come up against someone who's stronger and able to do to you what you've done to others to date.

Grant got his jaw busted on his debut when he was flattened by Lincoln Pennant, who was the hardest kid in my old school in Loughborough, so I took an interest in the Bradford man when he came back several months later. It was great that he made it all the way to a shock win over Graham on terrestrial-TV for the Lonsdale Belt, although Graham wasn't there of course. Nevertheless, southpaw Grant could fight but was denied a Lonsdale Belt outright by the in-and-out Neville Brown, who was most definitely 'in' on the night, again on terrestrial-TV.
Grant 'lost it' after his retirement but one hopes he is OK now and he is certainly doing a helluva lot better than Pennant, who suffered an horrific death when he was shot as he fled a gunman in a Tottenham nightclub in the 1980s, staggered down the fire-escape stairs and impaled himself on railings at the bottom.

prince was extremely dangerous & extremely tight at the weight but yes dariuz was pure class.

choker what happend to him. unbelievable how he has dealt with it, he's a very strong & brave person.
