British Super Featherweights

Post by Autobarn »

Classic domestic wars: Sykes-Crolla, Sykes-Morris, and now Crolla-Morris - setting up Sykes-Crolla 2 for the british title.

European success: Foster Jr destroying leva kirakosyan - a guy who eats brits for breakfast - with one punch for the EBU title.

World success: Ricky Burns standing up and showing what he's made of, winning probably the best fight of 2010 in gruelling battle with Puerto Rican puncher Roman Martinez.

What matchups will there be to look forward to, realistically?

130 gets stick for the state of the world scene but things are really happening over here.

There could be some good matches made in the uk! Foster jnr v burns would be quality fight. I think carl is fighting an elimantor for British too!

not that long ago there were great fights, mitchell-johanesson, johanesson-gomez, arthur-foster.

but things are really heating up now and we have a legit world champion giving everyone that extra motivation.

didn't know johanesson was bac in the mix. any idea vs whom?

anthony crolla really did impress me in that classy, tough fight with morris tonight. crolla showed it all tonight - pressure, variety, pacing, hitting harder - and i reckon he'll really go places.

obviously hattons will want to keep crolla and foster apart. can definitely see crolla closing in on that EBU title, though.

yep that was a great win, johanesson beating burns. don't like it when ppl say kirakosyan exposed carl. they all match up so differently.

sounds like an excellent fight, johanesson v truscott. a true crossroads fight, if it happens, both with loads to fight for. vacant english title? surely crolla has at the very least a british title fight comng up?

who's sykes supposed to be fighting next? there was a mooted fight, but obviously sky and hatton will be pushing for crolla.

big success for hatton, this card, eh? after all that trouble maybe the success of crolla and foster jr has sobered / cheered him up.

timing is everything. burns is on way better form and doesn't need the rematch.

johanesson doesn't have the loud personality to chase burns like gomez did with arthur (another super feather classic).

Johannesson is a bad match for Truscott. He will find it very difficult to hold Carl off all night.

Quite; Carl is, if not outright chinny, certainly always going to be at risk from bullish punchers but against someone like Burns he's dangerous because he's the puncher in the fight.

Sykes vs. Crolla is surely a must. I don't remember them fighting before, what was it like?

Foster vs. Burns would also be good, though I suspect the latter might be looking for bigger fish to fry.

Leva was ranked no 3 by the wbo before the fight so foster should get that ranking!

sykes v crolla was an inside war, loads of punches. bit like sykes-morris with more more punches crammed into their 10 rounds than in the 12 rds of sykes-morris.

crolla was very aggressive and sharp in the 1st half, but sykes was stronger and wore him down a bit in some great mid & late fight exchanges.

crolla fights a lot differently now, he picks his shots better and boxes more. in hindsight he played right into sykes. in a rematch i think he'll box his fight (not sykes') and win another thriller.

have a bunch of brits ever matched so well together as crolla, morris and sykes?

i wonder, does burns really have bigger fish to fry than foster? if martinez is looking for a rematch, yes, but i have a feeling that the puerto rican will have outgrown 130 & move on. will burns be gunning for the big fights, or will he and his promoter be looking towards the long haul, fitting in as many title defenses as possible? no one looks particularly appetising on the world scene, but foster jr would surely be a tasty fight. maybe a world title in itself is enough (re rumoured matt zegan fight) to headline in scotland? burns does look in need of a interesting opponent, and hatton has one (foster jr). so i guess we'll know if FW and RH can or cannot work together before long.

get it into your head mate Burns is way ahead of anyone in Britan.CJ would get hurt against Burns and what makes you think he needs an interesting name wasnt Martinez interesting enough for you, ricky has improved since that last fight and his confidence is sky high imo he'll be champion for ahas long as he wants.

martinez was definitely interesting. like i keep saying, that was the best world title fight in the UK since brodie v chi 1, and if it doesn't get fight of the year 2010 in every publication i'll be pissed off. i'm just raising the question, not all the title fights will be that good - for instance a much criticised matchup like matt zegan. not that they all have to be interesting, of course. no champ fights top opponents all the time.

all i'm saying is, there are some really good matchups in britain. even FW aka Al Legedly predicted there would be great fights involving brits at super featherweight. likened it to benn-eubank-watson. they had a great start with arthur-foster jr and mitchell-katsidis - couple of years ago. but then it ended quickly (tame arthur-cook fight, cook-martinez). now, obviously FW had all the top 130 fighters in britain then. and now he doesn't have the top brits to match with burns. so maybe the fights cannot happen. crolla and foster are really coming on, and while it's very early for them, it would be sad if these fights could not happen just because they're not with Al FW. if FW had them, we'd be hearing all that spiel about great domestic fights again, i reckon. yeah, it's a business reality that it probably won't happen unless they work their way up to mandatory, and that the scottish fans will watch burns whether he's fighting martinez or matt zegan.

burns is obviously very good, much better than most of us suspected. but like nigel benn, he's delivered vs an international comp, but had trouble with some top brits.
