If they were fighting now it would be a massacre, because Johnny retired relatively recently and still looks trim. If they were fighting in their primes, I would still pick Johnny in a competitive and entertaining fight.

Nelson had no confidence in 1989/1990 when McCrory was IBF champ, and a gutsy one. Glenn would have forced the fight as Nelson ran, ran, ran. McCrory wins.

Johnny in an entertaining fight? Johnny would probably win though but by fiddling and cuffing and doing anything but fight.

It's ironic really that for such a boring fighter, johnny is the opposite behind the mic. He's eloquent, charismatic, enthusiastic, knowledgable and interesting - words never used to describe him as a boxer!

good point. when mccrory was champ, i've no other way of putting it, but nelson might have shat it. i recall boxing news hailing mccrory for his brave, exciting effort winning the title, whereas nelson was panned for his dire "effort" vs de leon.

this is the only time their careers really seem to have overlapped. nelson spent a lot of time on the road, and mccrory had his day and burned out.

nelson certainly had some success in the late 90s and had a decent, if dull, run. by that time mac wasn't fighting.

I always wondered how McCory - Lumumba ever made a vacant IBF title?
Though I have seen a tape of this fairly recently and Lumumba was listed as 13-2, and from looking at his record he mixed in semi-decent company for his limited experience.
But even it today's standards we would have been calling this a rather average match for a commonwealth belt at best.

The cruiserweight division was bound to look weak after Holyfield - the greatest cruiserweight ever - vacated the belts and moved up. Lumumba was no mug. Glenn was smart in that he hired the help of American Alfonzo Ratliff for the fight, a man who had lost to Lumumba but knew all about him from their time together in the US gyms, sparring Tyson and all the other heavies. Glenn jumped on Lumumba in the first round, shaking him with a big left hook, and Lumumba went into sparring partner mode.

Now that's not entirely fair :shame: Did you see him against Lou Gent or his losing effort against Norbert Ekassi? He was great fun in some of his earlier fights. The fans never recovered from his paralysed showings against de Leon and Warring, but he wasn't always like that.

They had a common opponent in Steve Mormino ,Glen laboured to a points win and Johnny smashed the kid in 2,Nelson wins hands down both as a fighter and a commentator.

nelson had the better run overall, especially with the WBO title run. whereas mccrory got weak at the weight and his form went pear shaped. if they had fought when mccrory had gutted out that first defense and nelson was in disgrace for the de leon fight, then mccrory would have won.

nelson had much more longevity but also benefited from the revised cruiserweight limit of 200 pounds, enabling him to go on for a few more years. mccrory seemed to have problems making 190 very early into his title reign - if the limit had gone up in glen's day he may have had a better run with the IBF title.

In terms of Natural talent then Nelson is a mile better. Neither of them were the most consistent of fighter (McCory due to weight making issues) but Nelson especially could be made to look decided average by fighters who he should be beating with ease. Almost like he would be dragged down to their level.... it was almost Audley esque.

You'd have to favour Nelson, but he could always lose to people who he shouldn't do.

nelson was terribly negative and had the sky pundit and commentating team very antsy, many times. even in his prime as world champion.

1st 4 rds vs dominguez. though he boxed better later on in the fight.

fight with the italian, whose name i've forgotten. it was so bad that when nelson finished him with a head butt, everyone was relieved, and that proabbly goes for the ref.

late career defense in germany, when nelson was held to a majority decision win. nelson simply would not lead, in so many of his fights.

ezra sellers - good finish by nelson over a tough opponent, but he was looking very edgy and defensive.
