Khan claims he's a big puncher...!
I think Khan will comfortably outbox Maidana when they meet, but I was astonished by this quote in the latest press conference:
"He is known as a big puncher but I really think I am a bigger puncher. Although I am best known for my speed, ask my past opponents about my power.”
I really do wonder what he's talking about at times - first there were the claims of how Pacman couldn't put him down despite his 'best' efforts, and now this...

Re: Khan claims he's a big puncher...!
Khan is an average puncher whose tremendous speed allows him to land clean shots with his full force that can hurt many opponents. This can create the illusion that he is a hard puncher. For his sake, he should not fall in love with what he believes to be excellent KO power. Many fighters who are overly impressed with their power try too hard to bang guys out of there. At this point, I haven't seen any thing to suggest Khan will start doing this, but the more he thinks he can do it, the more he will try to. Smart boxing Amir!

Re: Khan claims he's a big puncher...!
Agreed. He's got decent pop but isn't a puncher by any stretch. A lot of his success is down to guys being hit with shots they didn;t see or could prepare for. Let's hope he doesn't start thinking he's the reincarnation of Julian Jackson or believing his own hype. Maybe he's trying to sell Maidana a pup and getting him to think Khan will fight a certain way?
Re: Khan claims he's a big puncher...!
He can punch a bit.
But he and Maidana are miles away from the concussive blows of Kostya Tszyu.
It's when a fighter can chop someone down with inaccurate body blows, you just know that power is just resonating through their whole rib cage.
Cotto can pull out big punches at140, but not with the frequency of tszyu.

You also have to take into the account the guys Amir has stopped. All small guys. And he's never actually flattened any of them, has he?
He obviously has some decent power & throws nice combinations but he's clearly no puncher.
If he thinks he's going to bang out the real puncher it seems the arrogance that led to the Prescott performance is back in force.

Roach is unusually quiet. You get the impression he doesn't want this fight.

To be fair I think Maidana punches as hard as Tszyu,he's just cruder and not as good from a technical standpoint!Maidana has also knocked people out with shots to the body, the cayo knockout was a classic example of that.G0mez wrote:He can punch a bit.

Thats a good point actually!I saw an interview from a few weeks back with Roach where he was talking about about Pacquaio and his workrate,he said although Khan and the other guys work hard none of them come close to the intensity pacquaio puts into training and thats even after all he's achieved in his career!I just thought it was an interesting interview from Roach.I cant remember where i saw it now unfortunately!bennie wrote:Roach is unusually quiet. Given Earl's condition that's surely not much of a riposte?Captain Hook wrote:Earl?overhand_right wrote:You also have to take into the account the guys Amir has stopped. All small guys. And he's never actually flattened any of them, has he?

It wasn't supposed to be a riposte, merely the name Earl - a man he flattened - in response to OR's post....
Given what condition btw? He was ruined by Katsidis, admittedly...

All I meant was that given Earl was clearly completely shot, flattening him couldn't be taken as an indication of punching power.Captain Hook wrote:It wasn't supposed to be a riposte, merely the name Earl - a man he flattened - in response to OR's post....

Re: Khan claims he's a big puncher...!
He had Salita over the shop. That's one point I was going to mention when we were talking about the trainers. In the Am's, Khan seemed to be a real puncher. You don't get many KD's in the amateur game and Amir scored some at the Olympics (against elite). I can remember a report by Bennie highlighting the potential of Khan, based on his power and I agreed whole heartedly with it.
Did Khan lose some of his technique you think? Is it coming back somewhat? Seems to have been developing some power back under Roach. A cooly executed KD of Osian Fagin and smashed Salita... okay in other fights he didn't rock Malignaggi and Kotelnik - but who has?

I can't remember how he said it, but Michael Gomez wasn't impressed by Khan's power.

You weren't impressed with that victory at the time then?
I wouldn't say Earl was clearly shot at all. He took a pasting from Katsidis but almost won the fight himself with several bombs.
I don't think anyone on here at the time was overly concerned Earl was shot and shouldn't fight Khan. Maybe I'm wrong, but the majority - from what I seem to remember - thought it would be a big test for Khan.
These two defeats should have seen him hang up his gloves, and the Castle fight was one too many IMO. At least he ended on a win.
A lot of people just don't want to give Khan any props, power or no power.

At this level he's not knocking the likes of Bradley and Maidana out...but earlier he could look devastating - a la Earl - because of his speed

Re: Khan claims he's a big puncher...!
To be honest I think Salita has a worse chin than khan!Ive watched fights of his where he was getting genuinely hurt by jabs and having to hold on for dear life!Regarding Malignaggi and Kotelnik not being rocked thats a fair point, although when cotto fought malignaggi he did floor him and broke his cheekbone badly if i remember correctly.Kotelnik on the other hand is genuinely tough as nails the person who I think has hurt him most in a fight and he was genuinely made to grab a hold was Maidana! He hit him with some huge shots that would of flattened most fighters!I mean if you go and look at kotelniks face at the end of the maidana fight you'll see it was completely swollen up.stujones wrote:He had Salita over the shop. Re: Khan claims he's a big puncher...!
Earl had been eating punches for years & absorbed terrible punishment vs Katsidis. The bloke was finished and his abysmal collapse is not great evidence of punch power. Salita had been knocked down in several fights against journeymen with very little power.
Not great examples here.

Khan's jab hitting Paulie's face was like a telegraph pole.
he took the fight out of Paulie with that punch alone.
Wlad K vs Chagaev style.
not bad for a 140lber.
he's settled down with his bambi-on-ice feet and he's stepping in with the jab, and its a properly hurtful weapon.
i think he's still got some way to go with his punching technique, especially with hooks and uppercuts, but he's getting there.
I think he can get Maidana out of there, for sure. he's very hittable and far from unhurtable.

Khan is not a devaststing puncher, his jab is probably his most potent weapon, and when he settles down he does throw it with intent.
But a power puncher he is not - All his stoppages have been ref intervention - The only time Khan has seen a ten count is when he was on the receiving end
D
As far as Earl goes, it was a good perfomance from Khan, but the more observant fans suspected Earl was on a downward spiral, further confirmed when Earl was stopped even quicker by Henry Castle in his next fight, yes Henry castle..
On saying that I do think he is hitting harder now than in his early days, more so because his style has been corrected a little.
Speed remains his biggest plus factor though, but by all means if Khan wants to stand toe to toe with Maidana to prove a point, we'll see who is the bigger puncher

khan has got some good power he's not a one punch knockout fighter, i use to spar him alot around the time he boxed limond. he's unbelievably fast and accurate and what he's good at is hitting and not getting hit. i dont think he's flattened anyone has he? he just overwhelmed them with 30 punch combo's
