He said he didn't want to be around for long when he turned pro 5 years ago. He said 5 years and out at the age of 18 - so I wouldn't necessarily think this will be the case.

Both Barerra and De La Hoya vowed to be finished by 30. It won't happen.

What's he going to do? Run a Khancast TV chatline?

A lot of sportsmen say things like this but the reality is very different, the majority of successful sportsmen/women have been doing what they do since they were kids and find it very difficult to call it a day.

Why is he saying this?

I don't get why boxers make these kind of comments.

Are we supposed to think it is good that he will quit?

It's not that outrageous.

He is 23 and about to make the 3rd defence of his world title. Talk of him being part of a mini-tournament to decide the best at light welter, so in thoery he could be undisputed champ within another 2-3 fights(12-18 months)

If that happens then what? Only bigger fights will follow and with it shed loads of moolah.

He came into the sport early and has progressed at a quick rate compared to the vast majority of British fighters.

Look at someone like Frankie Gavin. He has been a pro for well over a year, if he is in the same position as Khan is now in the same amount of time(Gavin is good but can't see even him going about it that quick)then he will be over 30. If he came out at aged 30 and said 'I'm gonna give myself 5 more years' no one would bat an eyelid.

Of course, do I believe Khan when he says it? Course not!!!! :D

I don't think it's a good idea to make statements like this. His decision will depend upon his stature at the time. If his career goes to pot before then, he'll probably retire. Conversely, if he's on top of the World in 5 years time, he'll probably want to continue a bit longer. He doesn't know what he'll feel in 5 years time, or where he'll be.

sure i remember him sayin he wanted to win titles at light welter, welter and light middle. surely he'll unify the light welterweights and by the time he has done tht mayweather and pacquaio could b retired if not then a big fight against one of them prove his worth at welter then win against a top light middle. could do all of that by the time he's 30.
