Kevin Rooney on Tyson. very good read.

Read all this artice because it is very good. It seems to have been written awhile ago but it is still very good.
Great little bit about fighting being 80% mental 20% physical, `anyone can get in physical shape` .how true when you think how Tyson used this to his advantage.
And what he says about the old fighters being in there to knock the other guys head off where as now they are too...well lets just say they don`t threaten that.
I also like the bit about Cus telling Rooney about the dirtier fight tactics he had picked up in the 20`s, I am sure all of us have been shown the odd move by an older fighter, they may have been showing you in the beginning how to move a fighter when your in a corner and how to bring his hands down with your elbows, but I bet he always got on to tell you how to do the `lesser mentioned tricks`.

Rooney seems to have a bit of a problem with that himself...tonyevs wrote:http://www.tysontalk.com/article44.html

Rooney once said Tyson could have been the first HW to go 100-0. Not a chance in hell
Re: Kevin Rooney on Tyson. very good read.
Let me guess: that 100-0 only applied if Tyson had Rooney as a trainer?bollox wrote:Rooney once said Tyson could have been the first HW to go 100-0. Not a chance in hellJohnRuiz wrote:Rooney seems to have a bit of a problem with that himself...tonyevs wrote:http://www.tysontalk.com/article44.html

"It's been 15 years since you've worked with Mike. Is it too late to pick up where you left off?
No. I don't think so. If he concentrated and really trained hard, it can be done. When we were at the peak, I had Mike sparring 10 rounds everyday... 5 days a week! It was an all out war EVERYDAY. There was none of that one day on and one day off crap. To be a great fighter... you have to spar. You gotta spar everyday, day in and day out, week after week. With Mike, I would spar him up until two or three days before a fight. "
Who does Rooney think he's kidding. Tyson will never be the fighter he was no matter who the hell trains him. He's an old man, a shot fighter....nature has taken its course. When Rooney was his trainer he was devestating. I'm sure of that. Once Rooney went, Tyson wwas all downhill from there

Rooney inherited a guy who had been pre-programmed by Cus D'amato, and who was young, and had incredible athletic gifts. Tyson surely had the most unusual combination of speed, power and flexibility/mobility of any heavyweight in history. He didn't have the mental flexibility to back that up, but against most fighters, that was a moot point.walshb wrote:"It's been 15 years since you've worked with Mike. If Rooney is such a fornicating fantastic trainer where's his string of world champions? It's a bit like Sugar Ray Robinson's old trainer, he once said something along the lines of how he made sugar ray and was the greatest trainer in history. A reporter pointed out that he hadn't managed to train any other great fighters, and promptly shut him up.
Rooney was given a recipe for success by D'amato, and obviously had a bond with the young Tyson, but now he's trying to make out like it was all his doing. Ridiculous.
The truth is anyhow, whether Cus died or not, at some point, Tyson would have turned his back on Cus, who despite his saintly reputation was using Tyson in his own way, to cement his legacy as an all time great trainer.

Whether Rooney had world champs or not is not important. You can't argue the fact that when Rooney was with Tyson, Mike was incredible. He obviously had a great bond and was a great motivator for Mike. Rooney's main concern was Training and discipline, this left Mike when Rooney was fired and Tyson was finished from there on in. I don't know a great deal about Rooney, but to doubt his influence and impact on Tyson is wrong. He was the main reason for Tysons success besides the fact that Tyson was obviously a very talented guy. I'm not discountin D'Amato. He played his part too, but Rooney was the one there 100% when Tyson reigned supreme

Tyson was getting in brawls with Mitch Green and going back to Brooklyn to rob and beat up old ladies when he was still with Rooney. He never had great discipline.walshb wrote:Whether Rooney had world champs or not is not important. You can't argue the fact that when Rooney was with Tyson, Mike was incredible. I just think Rooney had a style that suited Tyson.
Tyson fought only one way and that was how Rooney worked, look at Pazienza in his heavier days and it is also very quick combo`s.
I think he has a point when he says Tyson could not be controlled by his other trainers because he didn`t respect them because he knew more than any of them.
Tyson it is well known is a walking encyclopedia on boxing, he knew enough to know its the fighter who makes the trainer more than the trainer making the fighter.
Only when the same two styles get together can anything really great develop.
