Where on earth does Kevin Mitchell go from here?

Post by goldenears »

Headlining a fight at a football stadium to the wilderness in 3 rounds. Now the Alex Arthur fight hasn't come off, how does he fight anyone at domestic level that even looks remotely interesting given the level he was at? And how long can he wait?

Murray doesn't need him now and will have bigger fish to fry. Is he even back in training?

I feel for the lad, his performance against Prescott was punch perfect and he went a long time and a lot of fights unbeaten and came unstuck against a beast in Katsidis, though he was underprepared and fought the wrong fight.

Seems a good lad in all his interviews etc. I hope he gets a 2nd wind

Alex Arthur and John Appleby head up a strong Braehead Arena undercard on December 4.

There had been rumours that former WBO super-featherweight champion Arthur would face Kevin Mitchell on December 11.

But instead he returns to action in Scotland as he looks to shed the ring rust built up over several years of inactivity.
It is okay to have a few low level comeback fights, but he had better step up against half decent opposition soon otherwise his comeback is a big waste of time.

Not a lot of options out there at all, only ones i would say could happen are:

Nihito Arakawa
David Diaz
Ali Funeka
Hiroshi Nakamori

I would go for David Diaz big name fighter, but on the decline and this would reignite Mitchell's career. But i have no doubt this fight wont happen

Katsidis again I say. He needs to get his head straight, and train & prepare properly next time, maybe out of the UK. Why build him up again, before you know it he will be 40-1. It was not so long ago people said he would have Khan.

Mitchell ain't world class.

It's not like he went toe-to-toe in a split decision loss... He was utterly blown away by a true world class operator - one that isn't even top of the pile at 135lb either.

He'd be better carving out a few quid, in interesting domestic fights with maybe Rees, Murray or whomever.

Anyone who advises him differently needs sacking.

There is no shame in being a top dog of your own country, he has done very well so far. Much better than most - but let's not get above ourselves.

That was an incredibly strong and focussed Katsidis that we saw in that fight, even though JMM is older, that will be the acid test to see if Katsidis has learned enough mix it with the very cream, he's been beaten both times he's really stepped up himself too in the past.

I wonder if Kevin can still make Super Featherweight - he looks small at lightweight, Katsidis and Prescott were massive in comparison, probably not and i'm sure people here already know whether that's the case or not, but overall I totally agree that he could have a decent domestic/international career even if it didn't end in a World Title. Having said that, as people have quite rightly said he has to balance that against what he can earn in a normal job and whether the risk/reward is enough for him to really put in the dedication needed to get back up there.

The thing is though, if he has any pretensions to being in that mix again he needs to get active (that didn't help him, or Murray for that matter in the past) and put this defeat behind him quickly, and most of all he needs to be dedicated. For all his faults, you look at Mayweather and the fact that he's never far off of fighting weight and fitness, always in the gym, as apparently is DeGale which makes you think, given his talent that he has a decent future.

Mitchell's certainly shown real talent in the past and if he really wants it and is ready to make those sacrifices, maybe there is still an exciting future for him. The really exciting fight out there would be Murray in terms of a domestic showdown that could be career changing for either fighter, but you couldn't see that making sense for Murray anymore on any level.

Never seen a bubble (sorry :OhYes:  ) burst so quickly as his after the Upton Park fight though, maybe Enzo after the Haye defeat, but i'm not sure Enzo would have headlined the o2 against anyone else.

Why would Warren want to spend the money to set that sort of fight up again, before Mitchell has shown himself to be capable at a decent level?

Mitchell didn't even defend the British title after he won it. He hasn't even proven himself at that level yet.

If he wins these sorts of fights then he could probably get another World title shot.

There is nothing wrong with dropping back down to domestic level in order to build yourself back up for another shot at a World belt.

No, your right about Warren spending the money to set that up. I was thinking along the lines of him apparently not putting the work in for that fight, and maybe next time having half a chance, should his camp go to plan.

Can you beleive Mitchell was actually the favourite going into the Katsidis fight? The bookies made a major boo boo there.

If he can rebuild at a lower level then I think he has a decent chance at winning a World title.

allegedly knows better than most how to pick a fighter up from that type of defeat. Mtchell should try and mix it with some higher ranked europeans to feel his way back in...then see what happens with Murray and his shot. personally i think they both fall short and could end up making more money off each other, but that's a little way down the line.

Mitchell vs murray would be a great fight to be fair or mitchell vs rees!I think if he proves himself against those type of guys he can get a world title shot again.

Where does he go, Mick katsidis' sparring partner, this way he can learn that when your on the backfoot you don't move back in a straight line.

Seriously though, Aurther would be a good comeback fight. And heres a thought, has Breidis Prescott actually beaten anyone else other than Khan?????

Spot on, nothing at all wrong with that. Mitchell longed for the big nights and fights, and there are some fairly big domestic fights to be made, but should he lose them........ :verysad:

Feel sorry for Kevin, Katsidis was like a man possessed that night.

Mitchell is only Euro level and if he messed about with his training for his last fight (the biggest fight of his life) then that shows he lacks hart and should just retire

It was as heartbreaking a loss as Ive seen. To get butchered like that in front of 20,000 of your own supporters in your local turf in such a celebratory fashion. I really think the requirement these days for dancing girls, rappers and baloons to accompany a boxers entrance these days is not for every boxer......clearly it isnt Kevins style....and it got to him.......wheras a Katsides who may only have been a few years older but looks far older more grizzled more used to it next to the baby faced Mitchell..............LOOK MItchell is a fantastic talent and a great kid he can really fight...and i firmly beleive he will go back to the drawing board and come back strog....he took on a guy many others wouldnt in Katsidis ....Nigel Benn suffered a loss to Watson and came back I think Kevin can if he can overcome his demons

Thing is, he was blown up so big, that seeing him at Euro level feels slightly weird, like a backwards step, when really that is where he is at right now. Bloated records have to stop.

Was Mitchell really blown up that big though?

I mean, Fwanky got a hell of a lot of big name prospects involved(and the likes of Danny WIlliams) to help shift tickets for Mitchell-Katsidis in my opinion.

Before that he was never really a big draw and he never really beat a top fighter, Prescott since Khan and before Khan has nothing at all to shout about. As time passes it seems Prescott just hit the jackpot that night.

Mitchell is a good fighter of course, good to watch and he can come again. I don't see no problems with him starting a few rungs down the ladder again either. It's what should happen. The only guys that go from title loss to fighting at a similar level are those that have been floating around the top level for a while and even then, none would go staright back in at the top level after being battered like Kevin was against Katsidis.

It's all about levels. Just because it's clear he won't reach the very top doesn't mean he can't have a damn fine career and earn a fair whack in the process...surely the railways can wait for a few years?

we'd all love to see that fight pal but why would Murray take that now unless it was a World Title defence and Mitchell had worked his way up the rankings? It's the obvious fight for the public but as you know yourself, the question is does it make business sense with the way their careers are on different trajectories now? Murray's camp seemed to make noises about Mitchell getting opportunities before Murray did, so whether they'll feel like giving Mitchell an opportunity now that Murray is finally getting a sniff of big fights is unlikely wouldn't you think?

Mitchell should drop back down to super-feather, he just doesn't look big enough at lightweight, FW fix up a match with Burns and hey presto he's now a world champion.

I thought Alex Arthur was with Hatton promotions now? FW's site suggests not, what happened there anyone?
