Calzaghe stops veit AGAIN. lacy next?
Calzone banged out veit in the sixth. I swear i was this close to putting a tenner on sixth rnd ko at 12-1
I think lacy should outwork reid to a UD. I think lacy is, as most american fighters are, overrated and despite the stick joe gets(mostly deserved) he is genuine top world class would beat lacy with some to spare.

Yeah thats kinda the impression I got. He (Veit) was having probably his best round of the fight in round 5, landing some good shots and a lovely looking shot to the body, but got put down with what seemed like a nothing punch compared to a couple that Joe had landed earlier. He wasnt interested come the 6th.liamlion wrote:Calzaghe certainly didnt 'bang' Veit out. More of a case that once Calzaghe landed cleanly, Veit basically decided that he wasnt really interested.
I dont think we really know how good Lacy is yet, despite being a world champ he hasnt really mixed it with anyone really worthy yet. From what I noticed tonight I would say that anyone with a decent chin who wasnt afraid of being caught and let their hands go would catch Joe at will, he looked wide open tonight at times and there was times he missed with those flurries he was a sitting duck for a half decent counter puncher.

His next opponent all depends on what he wants. He can't just keep defending the WBO anyway, that is fact. Keeping at SM, he has Kessler, Beyer and of course Lacy holding the unifying 'titles.'
Beyer would be the easiest fight, in my opinion. I think he's showed his age and may be weakening in his last couple of fights. But what are Alledgedly-Sauerland relations like?
Lacy and Kessler are the two others. Still rather unproven, and just beginning their title defences. Lacy probably the more willing to fight sicknote, perhaps the better.
Vargas you have to leave out, as he's still completely unknown at this weight.
Light Heavy might still be an option. There was reports that sicknote had to draft in dietitions etc. to make the weight, and couple this with stujones' stunningly brilliant insight linking J-C's bald patch to poor nutrition (
) then maybe he will have to move up, for the sake of his hair at least.
But options are limited. We assume Tarver and Johnson to be tied up for their rematch, Woods has rubbished a fight with Joe, and anyway has his mandatory/RJJ/Tarver-coffee to think about anyway. I don't know if Erdei would actually be a possibility?
Anyway, bit of an unintentional ramble there. All my opinion as always and probably shit as always.

Lacys completely overated, his punching is the most overated thing about him, the only decent opponent he stopped was Vanderpool after about 20shots and it shouldnt have been stopped. Sheika came close to beating him and hurt him. Hes easy to tag, predictable and easy to pick off and counter all night. Plus hes inexperienced. A very very winnable 'BIG' fight for Calazage

So is Woods mandatory now Gonzalez after he beat Montel Griffin? I think Woods - Gonzalez would be a real good fight.jomothepure wrote: But options are limited. Can only presume so. I suppose that fight was for the #1 + 2 spots, and Gonzalez should now be #1 and the mandatory, altho the IBF seem to have slipped Ulrich into #3 ahead of the two G's, although this is obviously before they fought on Thursday.split_decision wrote:So is Woods mandatory now Gonzalez after he beat Montel Griffin? "If Jeff Lacy beats Robin Reid then the fight with Joe is a done deal," said Calzaghe's promoter allegedly.
"It'll either be in September, October or November but it is a 100% done deal provided Lacy wins."

Calzaghe does mention Reid in that article. He says he would be happy to face Reid for the IBF title if he wins, although he does say something along the lines of 'but I beat him with a broken hand last time.'
As Reid would have genuine title, then the fight could well happen.
I think we will finally see Calzaghe face some big challenges, there isn't really anywhere else for him to go, I think all concerned know that without big fights he just won't be a draw any more. I really hope Lacy fight comes off, although I'd be happy to see Reid win, and give him a genuine chance of winning, he's so much more experienced than Lacy, and has all the right tools to give him a hard night.

Beyer fights Eric Lucas in September so I dont think that a Calzaghe-Beyer fight will happen.jomothepure wrote: Beyer would be the easiest fight, in my opinion. I think he's showed his age and may be weakening in his last couple of fights. But what are Alledgedly-Sauerland relations like?

Erdei, Tiozzo, Ulrich and Sahnoune is part of a WBO/WBA Universum/AMI unification tournament so Calzaghe will not be able to fight for those belts in the near future.
Ive just read an article in the Daily Express and Calzaghe reckons he beat Reid easily in their last fight!!! What a cock, personally I thought Reid won the fight and basically bullied Calzaghe around, but even so the fight was actually scored a split decision...and Calzaghe reckons thats winning easily????jamesmcdonnell wrote:Calzaghe does mention Reid in that article. I'd put a fare bit of money down with you here - That you are wrong - Lacy stops Calazage if they meet - Calazage is overrated himself and Lacy is young, strong and improving -Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Lacys completely overated, his punching is the most overated thing about him, the only decent opponent he stopped was Vanderpool after about 20shots and it shouldnt have been stopped. Just to add after watching the hightlights on ITV last night:
Veit's corner chucked in the towel at the end of the fifth, but the referee let it continue into the 6th, with obvious consequences. Can a referee actually overule a corner retirement? Going by this the answer is yes, but seems rather idioltic.

It does seem strange, but remember the referee is actually closer to the fighters/action than the cornermen. And if a fighter is taking a beating or has been knocked over in a round he also checks over the fighter in the corner, so keeps that in mind for the following round. Plus there have been times where the corner stoppages have been somewhat dodgy - Carlos Monzon's 'knockout' in the Nino Benvenuti rematch springs to mind.jomothepure wrote:Just to add after watching the hightlights on ITV last night:
